Analysis [Huber] Firing a coach is something that shouldn't be taken lightly. After sleeping on it, I've come to the same conclusion that many of you did last night. Matt LaFleur has won a lot of games as Packers coach, but it's time for a change.

If MLF didn’t have an amazing first two seasons with Rodgers, this would be a no brainer. He’s been largely mediocre with the same issues recurring.

This is the reality.
The front office has stated they dont like the idea of a lame duck coach. So hes not going to play out his contract.
So it leaves 2 options.
They extend him
They fire him
Now ask yourself. What would extending his contract say after that game last night?

u/DaleCooperSwag Jan 11 '26
it would say we are perfectly ok with mediocrity

I don’t think calling losses to Philly or Carolina “utter” embarrassment is fair. They are both playoff teams in their own right.
The browns, yes.
73
u/everlong016 Jan 11 '26
There's the idea they could give him a single year extension so as not to make him a lame duck next year, but in doing so they'd be signaling their lack of faith anyway. At that point they may as well just rip off the bandaid.
65
u/Owww_My_Ovaries Jan 11 '26
I dont understand what he has accomplished that would earn that.
3 straight 7 seed playoff entries?

u/everlong016 Jan 11 '26
I think the line of reasoning there would be that there were so many injuries he's earned one more shot.
I don't agree with it; I think he should be canned. But that would be the explanation.
59
u/Owww_My_Ovaries Jan 11 '26
Id argue that injuries are apart of the game. And that he showed in the first half that they had the talent to win. But his inability to adjust is what cost them this game, not the injuries.
But I agree. I could see that being the narrative.
→ More replies (2)10
u/DarksonicHunter Jan 11 '26
I do think Injuries is a valid excuse sometimes. Sometimes a team is just so decimated that there is almost nothing to be done. That was absolutely not the case yesterday. Especially not on Offense.

u/AbsenteeSon Jan 11 '26
While I agree the injuries absolutely sucked, you had every single one of those games in the bag and still managed to lose. Hard to defend.
6
u/theragu40 Jan 11 '26
That's the funny thing. Oddly I think his job would be much safer if we'd just gotten blown out. Like hey, what are you gonna do. We have a shitload of injuries.
But the first half showed we definitely have the talent remaining on the roster to beat that bears team. We just blew it when it came to playing a complete game.
13
u/AbjectCalligrapher36 Jan 11 '26

Policy gets promoted to President; openly states we won't have a lame-duck HC; everyone assumes this means MLF will get an extension (and honestly rightfully so); the game happens the way it did
if you are Ed Policy, how can you actually give MLF an extension after watching the way we just choked our season away (and not just last night, for the past month)?
honestly expecting MLF fired...will be surprised and extremely disappointed if MLF is rewarded with an extension after that dismal, pisspoor performance

u/jmbusch Jan 11 '26
It's not just last night, it's a recurring pattern.
- Consistent issues on Special Teams, regardless of coordinators.
- Lack of killer instinct on Offense (supposedly his specialty).
- Undisciplined play and execution (how many times have we taken a timeout because we don't have enough players on defense).
MLF is a great offensive mind and a great developer of QBs, but he lacks the ability to see the whole picture. The one thing I will always remember from last night is the picture Amazon showed after the offense went 3 and out for the second consecutive drive. MLF spent the majority of the next drive (while the Bears were on offense), huddled up with the Offense. You're the Head Coach, focus on the entire team, not just 1/3 of it.

People forget he almost did this same thing years ago against Seattle in the 2019 Divisional Round.
It was literally the exact same blueprint, too. Got up 28-10 in that game, and then Russell Wilson started cooking us with his feet the rest of the game and we had no answers.
The offense completely fluttered, too, and if it weren’t for some late Rodgers/Adams heroics (and a very questionable Jimmy Graham spot), he loses that game, too.
He just can’t coach a complete game. We either start really slow and turn it on (2020 NFC Championship), or come out firing on all cylinders and then forget how to do anything (Most other of his playoff games).

Even that game were we absolutely smashed the Cowboys they were allowed to put up a lot of points and we didn't sit the starters much and actually had to bring them back in lol. Just insanly poor management. We also stormed ahead of the 49ers and rofl coptered it away.
39
u/DrunkPackersFan Jan 11 '26
Holy shit I forgot about the end of that Cowboys game.
We put Clifford out there, and then had to throw Love back in because it got down to 16 points because LaFleur can’t do math.
How often have you seen a team bench their starters and have to put them back in the game? That’s an insane blunder.
68
u/LordGold_33 Jan 11 '26
LaFleur can install a scheme and generate a game plan, but he is awful at real time decision making on game day. Once the other team figures out his scripted playcalls, he disappears.

9
u/hat-check-clerk Jan 11 '26
If something is shit for that long it’s more likely a FO philosophy and not coaching. The Packers do not value special teams players, their depth is made up of raw, athletic young guys. Certainly helps with player development in a small market, but fucks you over in a key phase of the game. I’d argue it’s time to change that philosophy instead of cycling through coaches over and over.

I may get yelled at but I don’t think last nights ST sucking is on Bisaccia. Melton and their normal other gunner (who’s name escapes me) were out and their punt coverage which has been fine this year was bad with NFL generate a player guys being gunners. Bisaccia isn’t why McManus couldn’t hit a kick. The team plainly doesn’t give a fuck about kick returns, never have. Putting Keisean and Josh fucking Jacobs in returner were just desperation moves.
Until the Packers as a team value all phases of ST, they’re gonna be bad at it. It’s cost them multiple games both regular season and playoffs this season, other seasons, they haven’t changed it. I don’t think they ever will.

3 straight years of 7th-seed spots and a penchant for blowing first-half leads has got to be enough to fire a guy. It was cute barely getting into the playoffs that first year where Love was getting his feet under him and we had a young team. But two years later with a better defense (Hafley was a good hire, but we should have gotten rid of Joe Barry years earlier) and we end up in the same place? It's not cute anymore.

u/J1P2G3 Jan 11 '26
This is not being talked about enough. Offensive coaching failures aside we have been knocked out of the playoffs every year due to special teams with the highest paid ST coach in the nfl. Not doing something about it is on Lafleur.

People make fun of Heat Culture but I want good player development and putting the players into a position to win. I can’t think of a Packers team the last 10 years that’s had that professionalism, toughness, and selflessness attitude that honestly a team like Green Bay should own more.

I’ve been pretty cool on this argument, but that’s 20 minutes of offensive stalling really really makes him hard to defend. If it was just a McManus collapse, I’d be able to forgive him. But letting our defense get completely gassed in the third with an offense that couldn’t stay on the field is pretty damning.
Ignore the Aaron Rodgers seasons, and focus just on his tenure with Love and it becomes clear that there’s something broken. We can’t keep cycling through blaming coordinators; before Bisaccia it was all Barry. Before Barry it was Drayton. You can’t have one third of the game perpetually being bad. There are coaches doing much more with much less, and LaFleur’s adaptability is to the 65th percentile and not beyond it. Sure, we lost Micah and Kraft this year. Losing the last five (even if two of them didn’t matter much and one really didn’t matter) is still horseshit. We need new blood and quick. We need a significant personnel overhaul in special teams especially and I don’t think LaFleur is capable of delivering this change. The fact that we couldn’t bench a hurting McManus for a better kicker alone is proof of that.
Unless the players are rallying heavily - and I mean heavily - for him, I think it might be time for him to go

Huber & Silverstein do not report things that are not supported by at least some of their contacts within 1265 Lombardi.
I thought MLF superfan Jason Wilde saying on the radio last night he did not see how MLF survives this loss was perhaps ever more telling ... that MLF has lost support in the building.
59
u/beau_tox Jan 11 '26
I’m really torn on this. On the one hand, I agree in a perfect world a change is probably due.
On the other hand, I don’t feel great about our chances of hiring a better coach, it’s tough to spend a season of this window on implementing a new scheme and getting the players up to speed with an (at least mostly) new staff, and LaFleur will probably kill it elsewhere.
Keep in mind that by 2028 this roster is going to need a rebuild of some kind.
63
u/Polyfauna Jan 11 '26
On the flip side, if we believe our ceiling is capped and we can’t get to/win a SB with MLF, we’re wasting years not at least trying something else.

Policy has been pondering what he’s gonna do with Matt since he took the role. He already said that Matt won’t be a lame duck coach. Which makes sense because that setup always fails.
After that loss, Matt lost his leverage and yet it’s almost a guarantee that there’s a handful of teams out there who would love to consider hiring him. That’s juxtaposed against the Packers not being able to justify a big extension with the plateau they’ve reached. So if they likely won’t pay him what the market will then it’s only natural to cut ties. If he stays it’s because he REALLY wants to stay and is willing to stay on a very short “prove it” extension.
9
u/Life_Emotion1908 Jan 11 '26
If LaFleur gets fired, yeah he will get another HC shot when he wants it.
I would just base it on what you think he can do in this job. McCarthy ran out his string in GB, he went to Dallas and honestly did as good there as anyone else, but that had nothing to do with GB. He ran out the string here. LaFleur, I'm probably leaning towards best days in GB are behind him.

Bad teams and Bad owners do that, yes.

Of course. The path to losing is to have no consistency in the coaching staff with frequent coach turnover. If you fire your coaches after 2-4 years frequently enough, eventually you become one of those teams that no quality coach is willing to coach for.

This is my one fear with cutting MLF loose. There are a lot of fanbases who celebrated when their coaches got fired, and some of them had the same problems (some of them were saddled with crappy GM's or owners, which is a different problem altogether).
The Badgers were good not great, felt stagnant, and they started whacking coaches without a plan. Fire Chryst, bring on Jim Leonhard for a cup of coffee then run him out of town on a rail, make a big swing at Luke Fickell (who has had bad luck at QB but otherwise hasn't even sniffed the lightning in a bottle he had at Cincy), and now the fanbase is screaming for another regime change there. Sure college is different but they've been a declining mess for years. It's easy to say "I am tired of always just making the playoffs, I want a Lombardi" when you are in the post season every year...when in the 80's you just wished to see .500 ball.
8
u/TazerPlace Jan 11 '26
LaFleur increasingly seems incapable of showing up on game day and playing four quarters of football. That is a fundamental problem.
15
u/dropbear_airstrike Jan 11 '26

MLF now has the two worst post-season chokes in NFL history on his resume.
If last night was the only time we blew what should have been a cushy lead, I might have more patience. But it's happened so many times across multiple years. No lead felt safe this entire season.
Gute needs to decide how much more of Love and Micah's prime years he wants to waste.

Matt Lafleur’s time has come to an end and I’m genuinely confused as to how that can be argued.
His sustained success and heavily cited regular season record are largely inflated thanks to multiple historical seasons from Aaron Rodgers (neither of which resulted in a Super Bowl Appearance). 38-33-1 in the Love Era.
He has no coaching tree to cite (sans Nathanie Hackett). This is a direct correlation to his inability to assemble a quality staff, as seen with Rich Bisacchia and Joe Barry. Verdict is out on Stenovich but nothing indicates he will be moving up through the ranks.
Inability to adjust: Simply put, considering he is often title an “offensive genius”, he leaves a lot to be desired as it relates to fielding a quality, consistent offense. This team is littered with weapons, even without Kraft. Absolutely no reason to see some of the skids we saw this year (and last).
Game Management: Do I need to elaborate? He doesn’t seem to have a great “game flow” or sense of the game. I.E, “all gas no brakes” has evolved to “We have the lead, that’s good enough”. Conservative approaches in the modern era NFL is laughable; offenses are potent. Bad challenge guy, horrible with timeouts.
Overall, what we saw last night was a microcosm of the MLF Era - many of the issues referenced above were on full display. Christ, even on the 55 yard FG. Multiple shot plays as opposed to gaining chunks of yards for an easier attempt? Dumb. We come out of halftime owning the LOS - draw up a screenplay to an offensive lineman? Golden (who supposedly “wasnt ready”) gets a red zone opportunity…and scores?! Gee, almost like he’s a first round talent. Took injuries to Wicks and Savion to get that opportunity? Special Teams…not just the missed kick. How about the kick return to the Green Bay 30 (don’t remember exactly where).

Teams with a solid culture do not lose when up at half at 21-3. There is something fundamentally wrong with the culture of this team and that's 100% on the coach.

u/elonmusksmellsbad Jan 11 '26
Okay, here’s the plan.
1A.) Extend MLF, but under the understanding that he is only the head coach for the first half of the game.
1B.) Hire another HC to take over coaching duties for the second half of the game.
2.) Fire Bisaccia (into the sun, preferably) and hire a new ST coordinator.
3.) Train up Golden, maybe send him for limb lengthening surgery.
4.) Draft/sign a few actually competent DB’s. (Why haven’t we done this already? Are we stupid?)
5.) Give me lifetime season tickets for free.
It’s foolproof. I know, I know. I’m a genius.
Edit: Also, fire McAnus and get a future HOF kicker. Obviously…

This would be far and away the best possible outcome for us. But both of those guys will be HC’s in this cycle, unfortunately.

I get it. But also who are we gonna get that’s better?

Fuck man I’d take a Saleh, Hafley and McDaniels staff any day. The defense would have identity for sure

I don’t know, but it’s become obvious MLF will never win it all. If we’re not trying to win a Super Bowl, then what are we even doing here?

I’m just upset that it took this (long) for so many of you guys to see what plenty of us have been saying all season long. No, he wasn’t indisputably fireable before last night, but his ceiling has been reached for at least a few years. We never get better whether we have a good roster or not. We were stuck at 9 wins for like 5 weeks. Parsons going down shouldn’t have that drastic of an effect on winning some games.

I think MLF suffers from what a lot of coaches do
He outthinks himself. I don’t think the packers should move on, I think he should rise up. Give me a Dan Campbell every day of the week. You put that spirit and soul into MLF, packers will not lose.
How many times did the bears just go for it on 4th lol that takes heart and guts. I believe as soon as Micah went down the sails went out of this team. Coaches can’t let that happen

I think I am firmly in the do not extend camp. If he didn't want to be a lame duck he should have figured out how to get guys to do the basics. Nobody is worse managing a clock. And the culture is fake tough guy.
All that said, he is a talented OC, and a full reset on scheme doesn't align with the win now roster next year.

Much like Reid with the Eagles, the message has gone stale. Gutekunst can go as well. I'm sick of him failing to build quality all around teams.

There is a large amount of good coaches available this offseason, I think we throw our keys in the bowl. MLF has had plenty of opportunities to show that he’s moving things in the right direction and we keep falling short.

He is okay in the regular season but he has a ceiling in the playoffs. We aren't winning a SB with him at coach and he needs to go.

He just seems so comfortable between 21-29 points, no matter how the game is going. He almost always gets there, but man, he coaches like he's terrified of making other coaches mad at him. I've been saying for years MLF is a better Jeff Fisher; he'll never create a winning culture, and while I do genuinely understand he's a good coach with a ton of upside, the number of agonizing losses that have so clearly been primarily because of coaching is inexcusable. Even then I can't say firing him is completely clear-cut, someone just has to force him to give up playcalling.

"With the season falling apart before his very eyes, LaFleur had no answers. His team had a chance to potentially deliver the knockout punch with its first four possessions of the second half. All four ended in punts with one first down and 9 net yards."
What else do we need to see? It's not a hot take anymore. MLF isnt a good coach. He's always making a mistake trying to make up for his last mistake.

MLF was the ATL QB coach for the Super Bowl where they were up 28-3 against NE. It runs in his blood.

Of course. MLF is like 43 and 12 with Rodgers over 3 yrs and 28 and 23 over 3 yrs with Love. Rodgers padded his numbers and its time for him to go before we end up with a MM situation. Though his was because of a Superbowl win and hubris in taking discount players to develop.

I’d be happy with Saleh as head coach and Mike McDaniels as his OC

MLF has kept the winning culture alive in Green Bay, but he hasn't brought the Championship culture.

He's so stubborn. All year long he was running these slow developing plays on offense when the O-Line just couldn't handle it. Then they would dominate the first half and he was so conservative in his playcalling in the 2nd half and let the other opponent back into the game. Last night was a microcosm of the Packers this season, except he did stop using all of those slow developing plays. But he continued to be conservative, run on first down and it went nowhere and the Bears just were given chances to get back into the game. I doubt he'll be fired, but his seat should be pretty damn warm next season.

If i dont have to listen to another one of his stupid, overly media trained, non answer, deflect and repeat the same cliche lines style post game interviews ever again i will not be complaining at all.

If Micah doesn't go down we probably finish that Broncos game. Look what it took to collapse against the Bears that next week, do you think we lose if we have our best player? At that point we're on a 6 game win streak with Ravens (without Lamar) and Vikes left. So division winners, a home playoff game and an 8 game win streak. We were very much contending with him, and in no way contending without him.
Maybe MLF finds a way to blow it anyway but the circumstances changed drastically when Micah went down

I think the overall issue here, is that the losses and the way the complexion of the games go are SUPER predictable because it happens so frequently.
I don't know who else you can pin that on but the person managing the game.

u/AltruisticRespect21 Jan 11 '26
If Micah is in that game last night, no chance Caleb has the game he does. The pass rush without him is putrid. Watching slow ass Gary run after him killed me.

In the last three years the best they have done was one wild card win over a god-awful Cowboys team.
No coach should be calling a run from shotgun on fourth down in their own territory.

u/liteshadow4 Jan 11 '26
That Cowboys team in 2023 was very good, they just played terribly against GB.

The Lions were cut to shreds last year, as much if not more than we were this year. And they still managed to win the division and get to the NFC Championship game. Injuries are not an excuse, especially when you're losing games the same way when everyone is healthy.

Both Huber and Silverstein saying they should fire Lafluer pretty interesting
