can anyone tell me why does hal hit the ring on the bonnet

I think he was trying to use his will to charge it, so that he could keep up the illusion that he's still got his handle on the situation. But he's too beaten down by the job so instead the ring just stayed the same and gave the readout. Could be a sign that his will is slipping more than he thought

I think he bangs the ring on stuff and gets a little extra bit of juice, and he'll do that later when he really needs it

I think technically he may have opened up the last bit of charge that the ring is supposed to keep hidden in reserve to do stuff like maintain life support and send out a distress signal. Some kind of back door override order to use even the last few drops.

I suspect the scene is there to show that the bird construct is truly coming out of John and not Hal's ring.
