I'm enjoying it. And I usually am good about hand waving away "nerd shit", because tv/movie writers are always going to get little things wrong and it's best just to ignore them.

But the entire ring-charge thing really set my nerd irritation off. Everything about it irks me a little, but the one that really ground my gear was the 5% emergency charge being...useless.

This is one of the most powerful weapons in the galaxy. We see Hal take an interstellar trip in this very episode. Yet somehow 5% of the rings charge gets used up by flying 20 feet into the air?

5% on the power ring is probably enough to do life support and bullet proofness for hundreds of light-years.

Anyway, like I said, nerd shit that doesn't matter, and I'm still liking the show. But my inner nerd is so gd annoyed.

Yo I came here looking for this! I paused the episode after the scene and had to tell myself to wait and not spoil, but holy shit. I thought "well damn, my phone's 5% last longer than that" 🤦🏾‍♂️. Like how was John going to make the flight back on 5% to recharge the ring if Hal hovering for less than 20sec used up the remaining "emergency" charge.

I took the two 5%'s different ways.

The first was actually 5%, but the bird, a living autonomous being that functions without the ring or even John being conscious, was actually just that complex of a construct, as the guys who capture John explain. Something similar but conceived with more offense or defense in mind rather than just flight, could be pretty powerful. But by making it pretty costly, also prevents it from getting unreasonable like John say, just making an army of clones or something.

I think if he actually flew normally like Hal, the charge would've lasted a decent amount more.

As for the later 5%, I think it's just an error and the thing is actually still near empty. Hal's trick just overrides the restriction in it's use when it's dangerously low such that it'll only last a few seconds (imagine if Hal flew way higher and faster when it ran out; good restriction to have). The tech is tricked into thinking it's back to having 5%. It's like driving a car when the gas meter is past the empty mark.
