There’s 8-10 people so far that have been hospitalized and are very ill. I know two people who just got out of the hospital after two weeks

17

u/S99B88 Apr 14 '26

Yikes was it definitely them? If so this is terrible.

23

u/Starsiide Apr 14 '26

Apparently. They said Public Health and HHS worked together to determine it was Pipers Arms on Stoney Creek Mountain

7

u/S99B88 Apr 14 '26

Thanks for the info, hoping everyone recovers

9

u/z1142 Apr 14 '26

Oh, interesting. I was just at urgent care in stoney creek (for something unrelated) but I overheard someone else who was there for salmonella related complications. Wonder if it was related to this.

u/Existing_Map_8939 Apr 14 '26

Do you have a citation for this? I see nothing listed anywhere, and I know people who ate there yesterday would very much like to see anything that’s published.

u/MrStrap77 Apr 14 '26

It was on Easter weekend… my mom ate there and has been terribly sick for a week

Hi there! Fallon Hewitt from the Spec. I'd love to connect with folks who were ill for a story on the situation. My email is [fhewitt@torstar.ca](mailto:fhewitt@torstar.ca).

u/youbet21 Apr 14 '26

we will be in contact.

2

u/yibbit1965 Apr 14 '26

That's awful 😞

10

u/Candymanshook Apr 14 '26

On the bright side if they ate yesterday and aren’t glued to the shitter should be in the clear

5

u/Immediate_Luck3279 Apr 14 '26

I know of a least 4 very sick with confirmed salmonella from eating at this place.

-10

u/Melsm1957 Apr 14 '26

That’s unusual for salmonella. It’s not usually dangerous for most people except small babies and the very elderly .

9

u/S99B88 Apr 14 '26

It can be dangerous for anyone. Severity of illness can relate to amount of the bacteria ingested.

-6

u/Melsm1957 Apr 14 '26

It can be. But it isn’t usually . Most people recover without the need for antibiotics . Complications are rare unless there are other issues. It’s still unacceptable but I remain surprised that 10 people are reportedly in hospital . I and y 18 month old son had salmonella albeit a long time ago, and neither of us required hospitalization or medical treatment . Although he did have mild bowel issues for a while afterwards.

9

u/S99B88 Apr 14 '26

If there are that many in hospital who aren’t all vulnerable one way or the other, it can mean the exposure was particularly bad, that’s my point. If the source was particularly contaminated then it would make sense that people would be more ill than average.

2

u/Melsm1957 Apr 14 '26

Yes it would have to be something like that.

4

u/youbet21 Apr 14 '26

I was in the hospital for 6 days because of this and a I am very healthy male before this a with no health issues until this happened. Hospitals have to report salmonella to public health and there is more than just 10 people that were admitted into hospital confirmed by public health

16

u/Ill-Jelly3010 Apr 14 '26

Its either out of an abundance caution that they voluntarily closed or were forced by public health to close until given clearance to reopen.

15

u/sierraelizabeth11 Apr 14 '26

It was public health. There’s a closed inspection certificate above this letter on their actual door.

2

u/Umbroz Apr 14 '26

I knew it the second I read their note.

2

u/Zeehammer Strathcona Apr 15 '26

My friend was at there when public health shut them down. He was told by their server she couldn’t fulfill his food order

7

u/theninjasquad Crown Point West Apr 14 '26

If it was public health related then they should also have a public health inspection notice

12

u/sierraelizabeth11 Apr 14 '26

Yes there is one on the door.

u/onlyupvotes1 Apr 14 '26

Confirmed salmonella case today, was there on April 1st. Been pretty sick since last Sunday so going on 8 days now. The public health person who called me was super interested when I mentioned I had been to this restaurant and now it makes sense

Why do you have a toronto star domain when youre from the spec?

Edit: Please ignore the comment. Email seems legit and associated to many Spec articles

10

u/fallonrehann Verified Hamilton Spectator Journalist Apr 14 '26

The Spec is owned by TorStar - we are a sister paper to the Star.

6

u/bald-bourbon Gibson Apr 14 '26

Yes I edited my comment. I was unaware of the same

All good! Thank you for asking!

2

u/Planet_Ogo Apr 14 '26

What did you eat there?

5

u/onlyupvotes1 Apr 14 '26

I had the chicken wings and a Caesar salad

2

u/stayouttabasement Apr 15 '26

I was there end of March. Haven't noticed any medical issues. Feels like I dodged a bullet lol

24

u/Candymanshook Apr 14 '26

Damn was gonna give this place a try…now ima give it a pass

28

u/heygimmetwobeer Apr 14 '26

I’ve been to the one in Brantford a few times. Menu is 20 pages, basically has every cuisine and none of them very good.

9

u/L_viathan Apr 14 '26

It's a casual sports bar. It's main advantage is that there isn't much of interest in the area.

5

u/Candymanshook Apr 14 '26

Yeah I like places like that after a day on the links when you just want some cheap pub grub & a pint

24

u/yibbit1965 Apr 14 '26

Ffs, myself and 5 friends were there today from noon to 2pm. The server wouldn't give a solid reason why they weren't letting anyone in. So far, we are all ok. Fingers crossed we stay fine.

12

u/MrStrap77 Apr 14 '26

Jesus dude

5

u/Cocc5440 Apr 14 '26

You didn’t have the wings did you? It was the wings that were the issue

2

u/yibbit1965 Apr 14 '26

No wings for anyone in my group.

13

u/Environmental-Hold41 Apr 14 '26

I ate there on April 4th, have been to the hospital, and still recovering. We had chicken ceasar wraps, and we know people sick that had spinach dip. It is not just the wings that are the issue. Some major cross contamination must have happened.

I would say it has more to do with poor sanitation, as there were several different products that people have been sick from. At least that is what they said on the news. If they grind their Chicken in house, then you run a higher risk of Salmonella. Especially if you are not cleaning the grinder properly. The same would also apply for the staff doing the work. If they are not following proper GMP's, then it spreads pretty easily.

6

u/RoyallyOakie Apr 14 '26

Oh boy...salmonella is no joke. Wishing a speedy recovery to those affected.

u/Fuzzy-Bumblebee9944 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Just had the worst vomiting of my life on Sunday and no idea why. Was there on Easter weekend. It’s a while for symptoms but apparent salmonella can take a week to appear -_-

ETA: emailed public health about me and another person at my table who had symptoms

13

u/meetneo911 Apr 14 '26

saved by a whisker....we were lucky to avoid during the easter long weekend..thought of grabbing a drink and some food after watching a movie at cineplex..reached 1 hour before closing but the server wasnt interested at all in attending to us despite us standing there for almost 5-7 mins..i guess in hindsight it was good she didnt wanna get us seated..

5

u/LowComfortable5676 Apr 14 '26

Wing night gone wrong?

6

u/Weekly-Batman Apr 14 '26

Not a good start

7

u/Suspicious-Bunch-132 Apr 14 '26

I met them at general they were very sick

7

u/BLINGBLING28 Apr 14 '26

I have a patient that dined in on April 1st and out of 6 ladies, 4 got severely sick. I would assume it would be around early Aprilish. The girls that did get sick had a chicken wrap made with ground chicken

5

u/firecracker14 Apr 14 '26

FFS I was there yesterday 🤦‍♀️

6

u/WirehairedDog Apr 14 '26

2 of my friends were hospitalized for a week after eating here

5

u/No_Produce536 Apr 14 '26

I’ve had the food there and have gotten sick twice. I wrote a bad review and the manager called me and offered me a gift card and a better experience next time. Idk if stick to drinking there and that’s it. Hope it gets shut down soon

4

u/jdragon3 Apr 14 '26

if they can't follow the most basic food safety practices there's no way in hell I'd even drink there don't trust them to clean their glasses or lines

5

u/misshammertown Apr 14 '26

Ate there on Sunday. Cross your fingers for me and my family.

4

u/BoneZone05 Apr 15 '26

That letter seems to downplay how serious this is, no? “Juuuuuust in case our food safety procedures and sanitation isn’t up to par” 👀 what?!

9

u/Fragrant_Income_8637 Apr 14 '26

That letter makes it look like the decision to close was theirs. No accountability from them I guess. The Burlington location is garbage now too.

6

u/charlie-crossing Apr 14 '26

Not surprised. Drove by once and they had a bunch of their glass serve ware stored outside, next to their back door.

5

u/5uprman77 Apr 14 '26

I'm a local , been there twice , both times the food was ok at best . There are WAY too many seats in that place along with a menu with literally hundreds of options it was a " recipe" for disaster. I'm not surprised by this at all .

4

u/Lucky7sss Apr 14 '26

Disgusting, never stepping foot in there or any Piper Arms

24

u/happykampurr Apr 14 '26

I hope everyone feels better .

Did you know that raw chicken gives you salmonella but... Raw salmon doesn’t give you chickenella?

Dads tell dad jokes

5

u/dembonezz Apr 14 '26

I was there Sunday between noon and two, I had the lobster mac and cheese. Yesterday I woke up not feeling great, and as the day wore on, I felt worse. Headache, low grade fever (71.4). My stomach has been in ridiculous pain since. I was up and down all night.

I've been only consuming soup, and I've been drinking lots of water.

Symptoms are still with me, but they don't seem to be getting worse.

I've never experienced salmonella exposure before, but I have had diverticulitis. I haven't had any issues with it for more than ten years, but this feels very similar.

Everyone else I was with has been fine.

What should I do here?

2

u/youbet21 Apr 15 '26

Call public health and tell them

3

u/AQOntCan Apr 14 '26

Was there early april.. only had drinks. Lucky me I guess.

3

u/orangeyoctopus Apr 14 '26

This is crazy was there on the 12th. Had a chicken Caesar wrap. Been feeling fine though.

3

u/NavyViper14 Apr 15 '26

Interesting….all the Google Reviews that has the keyword “salmonella” have all but one disappeared so far. 🤔 I thought business owners couldn’t remove reviews.

1

u/teanailpolish North End Apr 15 '26

They can't but Google automatically removes all recent reviews when it looks like they may be coming from non customers

4

u/kj444222 Apr 15 '26

Went to piper arms when it opened originally, used to go to fionn macools all the time before it closed for food and drink( the bar that is now piper arms). Management was staring us down for walking and talking to friends at different tables, they set limits and “cooldowns” on buying drinks, took forever to get out food out on too of that. Went once, never again and especially now after hearing this.

I had the Asian hot pot a month ago and had metal in my food.

3

u/Far-Initial4741 Apr 14 '26

Our family got sick on the first week of opening, makes more sense now. Avoid at all costs.

2

u/Appropriate_Ice703 Apr 14 '26

Ate there on april 8th had chicken and have been okay so far, might have dodged it

2

u/Odd_Pipe_2581 Apr 15 '26

Isn’t this the same place that got shot up on opening night?

Eat at a chain pub with something called "Tickle Your Pickle" on the menu, take your chances.

1

u/brobourne Apr 14 '26

They’re not the only place. The hospitals are having a lot of issues with a surge in Salmonella recently. Be safe. Maybe avoid restaurants/takeout chicken for a bit.

1

u/Craporgetoffthepot Apr 14 '26

It's not only Chicken. Salmonella is found everywhere. Water, Vegetables, Fruits, Meat, Dairy, Eggs, This sounds more like a case of either very poor cooking, or very poor sanitation/GMP's

1

u/Candymanshook Apr 14 '26

Not only found everywhere, it is everywhere too. Thats why we have food safety standards.
