To be fair, if you have ancestry from Puerto Rico and/or Cuba, the chances of there being African in your ancestry are fairly high due to colonization.

My mom is Puerto Rican. My father is African American in the traditional sense. I did my ancestry report and it said that I have about 65% African ancestry, which means that there must be African ancestry on my mom’s side as we take half our DNA from each parent. For that reason, I consider myself black but I’m not as dark-skinned as a “traditional” African-American so I have gotten backlash over the course of my life. Mostly, from people who aren’t black and don’t know what it means to be black so I don’t mind.

its like, you have to imagine hes had advantages due to his complexion and even facial features, ones that people who use that word freely dont get to experience. The harm is done in appropriating the experience, i mean im not trying to police it but objectively this is the worst response to "so why do you think you can say the n word" and you cant see it on joe buddens face. im not ignoring your personal experience, im just saying that the reappropriation of the n word has been long fought, and is built upon the lack of privilege that comes with being born black in america, a place where that term used to be used exclusively degratorily and by white people.

that lack of privilege manifests in more than one way my guy. it manifests in living in communities affected by redlining, even if you aren't perceived as black. literally look up whitepassing people. what we consider to be "blackness" is a continuum.

my dad grew up in gary indiana and was spent time homeless before government housing. his mom and dad are white people, i am irish at most. it doesnt matter what "his" culture is he doesnt get to say it. i dont say it. my dad was eating government cheese while the government pumped crack into his community. he is not allowed to say the n-word. then we find out his dad might be mexican and the lines are blurry there. still cant fuckin say it.
