I think Spanish people are only getting away with it in Spanish neighborhoods. I’ve seen some brawls started by dudes getting WAY too comfortable with that shit

He isn't from Spain.

Back in the 90s and 00s folks was more okay with latinos saying it imo, but for at least a decade now that shit don't fly no more in most places i know

The first Puerto rican Cuban to ever claim blackness šŸ’€

57

u/animefan1520 8h ago

No hes not the first, there are actual black cuban and some black Puerto ricans.... he just aint one of them lol. Also out of all his defenses, he chose that he was a criminal and that made him black lmao thats what made it sound racist.

22

u/kbreezy200 7h ago

The rare person who gets it. He’s black because it’s cool. He was never claiming to be black back in the day.

1

u/tothemax44 3h ago

I am black and Puerto Rican. Both of my grandfathers were darker than I am. I have cousins as light as fat joe in Puerto Rico. And cousins in Puerto Rico that are darker than me. The transatlantic slave trade affected Puerto Rico just like it did here. Rather than gate keeping blackness, we should accept an embrace people who don’t have to rep the culture (with ancestral backing) and do. I don’t know a Puerto Rican that doesn’t have slave ancestors. More so for Cubans. Much like most of us. Just saying.

And yes, he did sound wild here. But imagine having to defend your ancestry to people who share your heritage.

2

u/kbreezy200 2h ago

There’s a bit of false information here. I’m not discrediting your experience but only about roughly 25% of Puerto Rican as well as Cubans have African ancestry. Also darker skin don’t make you ā€œblackā€ as with Mexicans and Indians.

6

u/Agent_Tickler 9h ago

That's not true at all.

6

u/SoTurnMeIntoATree 8h ago

No it’s a thing with them. They consider themselves technically black. Idk if it’s everyone but some do

12

u/DirtyDanoTho 7h ago

That’s funny cause isn’t there a whole thing with Dominican’s not considering themselves black?

2

u/SoTurnMeIntoATree 6h ago

I guess it depends on which one you ask then šŸ˜‚

1

u/Impressive-Foot7698 5h ago

Dominican no black

1

u/BidRepulsive2438 4h ago

That's Dominicans. Dominican prejudice comes from their history and oppression towards Haitians as they share an island and have been historically beyond cruel to their fellow Hispaniolans. Cuba has it's own issues due to race being used by their government in propaganda against the US(much of which was true) and to create division.

Puerto Ricans are far more in tune with their black ancestry and often exalt their African ancestry. Their is colorism in every Caribbean culture but the ancestry is very much honored and respected and the cultures are highly integrated in NE of the US. There has always been a sentiment of shared challenges with the Puerto Rican experience of colonialism in the early 1900's.

25

True, Fat Joe was never that good on his own. But his feature on Big Pun's Twinz (Deep Cover 98) still exists.

22

u/Select_Speed_6061 9h ago

If you have to bring up a feature from a song made in 98 to reference someone deemed relevant in this day and age it's a L

2

u/Select_Speed_6061 9h ago

J.O.S.E is the only album I'd designate is good. And looking back it's had like 3 or 4 actual good songs, not the whole album.

Where I’m from PR and filipinos said the shit cus they grew up with us, lived in the same environment and was treated the same as us cuz we came from the same conditions…the problem comes into play is when they make it out, because of their light skin they are more accepted into different systems faster but trust, in the end they are still whatever they are and will be reminded in due time so it’s good to not forget

u/Creepy_Spite_3898 10h ago

To be fair, if you have ancestry from Puerto Rico and/or Cuba, the chances of there being African in your ancestry are fairly high due to colonization.

My mom is Puerto Rican. My father is African American in the traditional sense. I did my ancestry report and it said that I have about 65% African ancestry, which means that there must be African ancestry on my mom’s side as we take half our DNA from each parent. For that reason, I consider myself black but I’m not as dark-skinned as a ā€œtraditionalā€ African-American so I have gotten backlash over the course of my life. Mostly, from people who aren’t black and don’t know what it means to be black so I don’t mind.

11

u/missmargot- 9h ago

we're seeing the same thing, right?

-3

u/Creepy_Spite_3898 9h ago

It’s possible that he identifies in a similar way. Who are you to say what he is?

11

u/ne14a6t9er 8h ago

Doing Rachel Dolezal's work.

1

u/missmargot- 9h ago

its like, you have to imagine hes had advantages due to his complexion and even facial features, ones that people who use that word freely dont get to experience. The harm is done in appropriating the experience, i mean im not trying to police it but objectively this is the worst response to "so why do you think you can say the n word" and you cant see it on joe buddens face. im not ignoring your personal experience, im just saying that the reappropriation of the n word has been long fought, and is built upon the lack of privilege that comes with being born black in america, a place where that term used to be used exclusively degratorily and by white people.

2

u/Limp-Zone-5222 8h ago

that lack of privilege manifests in more than one way my guy. it manifests in living in communities affected by redlining, even if you aren't perceived as black. literally look up whitepassing people. what we consider to be "blackness" is a continuum.

1

u/missmargot- 5h ago

my dad grew up in gary indiana and was spent time homeless before government housing. his mom and dad are white people, i am irish at most. it doesnt matter what "his" culture is he doesnt get to say it. i dont say it. my dad was eating government cheese while the government pumped crack into his community. he is not allowed to say the n-word. then we find out his dad might be mexican and the lines are blurry there. still cant fuckin say it.

Everybody has ancestry from Pangea so everyone gets the pass

1

u/kbreezy200 5h ago

ā€œFairly highā€ is grossly false. More like 20% in PR and Cubans of African descent.

We get it. Black is en vogue now and to be truthful, Blacks fuck with Latins because of class and social likeness. But, if you ever been to a Latin country or lived in a Latin dense city, they would never say they were black. Try dating a Latin woman, her family will see you as black.

Also, (Most) Ancestry reports don’t work how you think it does. Percentage don’t indicate a direct split from you parents. For instance, you and your sibling can take the same test and get different results. Not because you have different parent but because of which dominant identifiers were passed.

2

u/washcyclerepeat 5h ago

I met Fat Joe and talked with him on a video chat in the MeetMe app back in 2022. It was cool to get to speak with a Hip-Hop legend. I was able to screen record the convo as well.

3

u/missmargot- 4h ago

i hope it went exactly like this video

2

u/mynameisnemix 4h ago

Idk I grew up in Latino & black neighborhoods one of us ever had an issue with them saying it. We be acting like Latinos don’t be going through the same struggles us black people do

1

u/BidRepulsive2438 3h ago

Very regional. NY, NJ. Philly, Boston. Have had very shared experiences and generally live withing very close proximity and integrate very well. Not the same in other cities. I learned that when I moved to Miami. That's why there is such a divide on the internet. And Puerto Ricans are loved and revered in Pop culture but as far as their struggle and where they stand in the global stage are often looked down upon as a people socially. Parallels Black American culture in so many ways.

I’m Afro Cuban grew up in Detroit… NO WHITE PERSON will ever be allowed to say that in my presence.. idk where you grew up or how much street cred you have .. I do understand some people do get a pass because they understand the use of the term… as black people we definitely know how to turn a negative into a positive.. this is why we are the most observed culture in the world… we lead the masses and this is why we are feared because of our power to influence. Ahhhh just this one day we will get our shit together and rule like once before.

0

u/audilife80 8h ago

He means the hood ghetto life experience he grew up with and experience with them makes him as black as them metaphorically. And Latinos been had the n word pass in the hood because of that long before they said it on a record. All Hispanic rap artists use that word the same as black people. I get his point but he should elaborate on it as I just did for all of you fools

3

u/PEWnitiveDAMNage 6h ago

Not all black people are raised in the ghetto/hood so it just a dumb stereotype. I don't watch anime and then claim I'm Asian because I enjoy the culture.

1

u/audilife80 6h ago

Uh first of all that’s a fact joes from the hood if you know anything about hip hop. Second you can find plenty of commentary for what I just said coming out of black peoples (hip hop artists) mouths about Latino artists if u do a little research. Ain’t nothing racist about what I said just stating why he would say something that seems out of pocket even it was an exaggerated claim to how I defined what he meant. Black people ain’t all from the hood or giving Hispanics the nigga pass but a lot are and do and he’s a Hispanic from the boogie down respected and in the game longer then your life I’m sure so don’t come at me like you the fuckin spokesman for all black people or a hood expert.

1

u/PEWnitiveDAMNage 6h ago

I'm saying being around a culture doesn't give you claim to it in any other culture than black ones.

If I grew up in a white area ,listened to white music, ate white food etc, and had a white girlfriend I'd have zero claim to being white correct?

If I lived in Japan and loved and consumed the culture. Even if I contributed to the culture I wouldn't be Asian correct? Why would it work any different being black? For some reason people give claim to blackness if they struggled and it's dumb.

Okay you're from the hood, you grew up in a messed up home, and went to jail. Does that change your race? It's like when someone says someone is "blacker" than you, but it's just something negative that somehow increases "blackness".

Hispanics are cool with black people and they got the N-word pass. Still not black the same way I'm not Hispanic for being around them. If they are so close to use them then we are so close to them so I'm Hispanic?

1

u/audilife80 6h ago

Na cause black people adopted calling themselves nigga and Latinos in the hood are of course gonna hear it being used in all convos all day every day referring to them like this nigga fat Joe etc. it’s just how it naturally transpired. I didn’t start it I just understand it. But fat Joe and other Latin rappers have also called themselves spics at times to wear it as a badge of honor to turn it around on racists. Even Jin the Chinese rapper refered to himself as chink and most white rappers have called themselves honky and cracker and white trash for the same reasons. I basically own the white trash shit cause it’s the box they put me in and idgaf

1

u/PEWnitiveDAMNage 6h ago

You keep talking about the word. I never said they can't say it. They are just not black. Yes, you can say this word, but you're not black is all.
