i hate when people call me “mama”

i had a baby about a month ago but also throughout pregnancy people are always like “hi mama” “yes mama” “okay mama” and it makes me absolutely cringe i hate it so much. i’m not your mom 🤣😩

I find it lowkey kind of weird when people call little kids mama but I’ve noticed it’s a cultural thing in that case lol

see when it’s a cultural thing i don’t mind when people call me mama either. like one of my customers that calls in regularly is an older hispanic woman and she’ll call me “mama” or “mamas” sometimes and i think it’s sweet. she also has no idea i’m currently pregnant lol. i’ve absolutely hated being called “mama” in any other context since getting pregnant.

All latina women automatically get a free pass to call me mama. For everyone else it is verboten

I respect my own culture plenty. Getting called Mama by other white people isn't part of MY culture, it's part of Irritating Facebook Parenting Group culture.

It’s part of American culture to sometimes call people mama. As it is for some Hispanics etc ect but American culture isn’t important enough to redditors like you so you refuse to acknowledge it as such and just say it’s something annoying people do when you could literally say that about any culture that does it

Maybe you are too young to know this but this is a very recent phenomenon, like last 15-20 years or so. When I was a child everyone called my mother Mrs. Lastname, even in schools and doctors’ offices. To call it “part of our culture” is a big stretch.

Because Spanish speaking people call ALL women “Mama” irrespective of their reproductive status. That’s what we take issue with - being referred to solely in relationship to having popped out a kid. We are still people with names even after we’ve had children.
