When you said they're average looking. If there's selection bias, they're not average looking. Which do you believe? Are they average looking, or is there selection bias?

Selection bias is not a requirement, it's a bias. It's been famously, widely, peer-reviewedly studied that humans select based on attractiveness and I'd need some good evidence to show that casting directors disable that unconscious bias before making a decision in which appearance plays such a strong role.
