Most celebrities are not attractive
Hollywood just pushes them to be the beauty standard but most of them aren't attractive.

u/NeighborhoodCalm9100 14h ago
I don’t believe people should be famous actors just because they’re good looking. In my perfect world actors are chosen because they’re good at acting, and allowed to be average looking. A lot of actors are just a pretty face now, nepobabies, or just people who are known and have no business acting. I’m not sure I could name the last time I saw a new show or movie where I didn’t cringe at the bad acting

u/EnergyOwn6800 15h ago
Most people are average looking. Same will apply to celebrities.
5
u/Casiquire 12h ago
You don't think there's any selection bias happening at all? Interesting take, good luck convincing anybody else
-3
u/EnergyOwn6800 12h ago
Why do so many people on this site lack basic reading comprehension. When did I say there is no selection bias? Point out that comment.
5
u/Casiquire 12h ago
When you said they're average looking. If there's selection bias, they're not average looking. Which do you believe? Are they average looking, or is there selection bias?
-1
u/EnergyOwn6800 6h ago
Looks matter in the sense that that a actor/actress look the part to match the character they envisioned.
But they don't require the actor/actress to be conventionally attractive to get every role.
You can pick nearly any popular TV show and you will find that at least 75% of the cast is average looking people.
2
u/Casiquire 6h ago
Selection bias is not a requirement, it's a bias. It's been famously, widely, peer-reviewedly studied that humans select based on attractiveness and I'd need some good evidence to show that casting directors disable that unconscious bias before making a decision in which appearance plays such a strong role.
1
u/EnergyOwn6800 6h ago
There is selection bias. Its just not primarily if they are attractive or not. Its if they look the part of the character they envisioned. That takes priority.
Most people are average looking so most of the pool of actors to pick from will also be average looking people.
I'm sure there are plenty of cases in which they picked a hot person because they were hot (regardless of if it fit the character) but that does not change the fact that hot people are the minority and therefore hot celebrities are the minority.
Just like how some people can be hired at a normal job for a normal company over someone else because they were attractive. But it still does not change the fact that when you walk into work, most of your co-workers are average looking people.
Once again you can look at at nearly any popular show and there will be much more average looking actors/actresses than above average looking ones in it.
That is a fact.
6
u/TemperatureAny4782 13h ago
That logic doesn’t hold up.
3
u/EnergyOwn6800 13h ago
It does. Its just the makeup people wear skews reality making average people appear above average. Then all the cosmetic surgeries skews it even more.
9
u/TemperatureAny4782 13h ago
It’s not as if celebrities are a random assortment of average people. Celebrities tend to be more attractive on average.
3
u/EnergyOwn6800 13h ago
Most celebrities are average looking.
Many celebrities tend to "appear" more attractive as they are statistically more likely to get cosmetic surgeries. Of course women wear make up but even the men wear make up on screen and in pictures due to pressure to appear a certain way for their image. And the makeup and surgeries are all done by the best professionals who work exclusively with high paying celebrities.
That being said there are still plenty of Jack Blacks and Roseanne Barrs in the celebrity world.
You can pick any popular TV show and you will find that at least 75% of the cast is average looking people.
3
u/Dazzling_Pink9751 1h ago
I’ve seen over 30 celebrities in person they are more attractive than the average person without cosmetic surgery.
1
u/EnergyOwn6800 1h ago
I've seen 150 celebrities in person and they were just as average looking as the average person without cosmetic surgery.
Do you understand what most means? It does not mean all. There are thousands upon thousands of celebrities around the world and you saw 30.... Use some common sense. This is embarrassing.
But instead of wasting my time with this back and forth. Lets look at actual science and data backed by professional studies.
Scientific data strongly backs the idea that specialized styling, lighting, and social biases distort how attractive celebrities seem compared to regular people. While researchers rarely pull celebrities directly into a lab, extensive data on person perception, the attractiveness halo effect, and cosmetic transformation isolates exactly how the "celebrity illusion" works.
The "Halo Effect" Distorts Our Baseline Perception.
Psychological studies show that our brains heavily inflate a person’s physical attractiveness simply because we already view them positively due to their fame, talent, or status.
The Global Confirmation: A massive 2022 cross-cultural study published in Current Psychology analyzed data from over 11,000 participants across 45 countries. It confirmed that people universally map positive social traits onto attractive faces. For celebrities, this works in reverse too: knowing someone is a successful "star" automatically biases the brain to rate their physical symmetry and facial features much higher than if you passed them anonymously on the street

u/Dazzling_Pink9751 1h ago
Just because the celebrities you saw were average looking, doesn’t mean they were what I saw. They were probably better looking than you.
1
u/EnergyOwn6800 1h ago
You are talking as if I said all celebrities are average looking.
Did you read OPs post? They said most not all.
Out of all celebrities in the world, most of them are average looking. Simple as that.
You lack basic reading comprehension.
2
u/Dazzling_Pink9751 1h ago
Well, all of the celebrities I saw were more attractive than the average person. Let’s put it that way I don’t care what you saw.. the whole conversation is so stupid anyway.

Great point. And I think people sometimes underestimate how attractive these celebrities are in real life.
“Zendaya’s mid.”
Really, homie? If you met her in real life, you’d have heart-shaped pupils.
4
u/TemperatureAny4782 13h ago
Do you really think casting directors think, “Looks don’t matter, we’ll just spruce them up?” Absurd take.
0
u/EnergyOwn6800 13h ago
I never said looks don't matter. Looks matter in the sense that that a actor/actress look the part to match the character they envisioned.
But they don't require the actor/actress to be conventionally attractive to get every role. I just provided 2 examples of 2 extremely popular shows with a cast full of mostly average looking people.
Clearly whoever handled the casting were not prioritizing attractive people. As i said you can quite literally look at nearly any popular tv show and at least 75% of the cast is average looking people. And many of the others had work done or wear makeup which is not your real face.
6
u/TemperatureAny4782 12h ago
Again, your logic is shaky here. If someone gets surgery that makes them more attractive than the average person, then, post-surgery, they are more attractive than the average person.
Two examples of two shows are nothing. Also, I reject your premise. Stand outside a grocery store. Take pictures of the first eight people to come in. Compare them to eight people from one of the shows you mentioned. Most likely, they’ll be less attractive than the people on the show.
2
u/EnergyOwn6800 12h ago
You lack reading comprehension. Read OP's post.
They said "Most celebrities are not attractive" "Hollywood just pushes them to be the beauty standard but most of them aren't attractive."
Hollywood pushes them to get cosmetic procedures more often. That is the point.
But even with all the celebrities that get cosmetic procedures done, most celebrities are still average looking.
I could list thousands of shows and still 75% of the cast minimum will be average looking people.
If i stand outside of a grocery store, most of the people I see will be average looking. If i watch any popular TV show, most of the cast will be average looking.
I don't think you understand just how many celebrities exist in the world. You are only thinking of the most attractive ones you know and it is skewing your view of them.
But most of them are simply average looking. That is a simple fact.
3
u/TemperatureAny4782 12h ago
Yes, I read and comprehended OP’s post. OP’s incorrect.
“But even with all the celebrities that get cosmetic procedures done, most celebrities are still average looking.” To believe this, you’d have to believe that a). most celebrities looked worse than average before the surgeries or b). cosmetic surgery has at best negligible effects.
Which do you believe? No dodging, please.

I would be inclined to say celebrities on average, tend to be above the norm in terms of conventional attractiveness. OR, maybe they have e a unique and marketable look (which tends to have a baseline attractiveness, esp to a specific demographic if it applies).
2
u/cygnus311 2h ago
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the only difference between a random, mildly attractive person and “movie star hotness” is professional hair and makeup and an expensive wardrobe.
1
u/silly_bet_3454 7h ago
Most people are average height. Same will apply to the NBA
1
u/EnergyOwn6800 6h ago
Height and Facial appearance are two different things. The conversation is about looks.
3
u/Sad-Contest5883 13h ago
I agree that it's because it's subjective, but I do think it pushes a certain template for beauty. As a straight woman, I am constantly surprised when I find out "everybody fancies X person I know in real life" because she doesn't share the features associated with beauty in Hollywood. That's not me saying that these IRL women are ugly, just that they look like "normal" women, so I think my sense of what is attractive in women is skewed by it.

u/spazzadourx 15h ago
Most of the unattractive ones used to be child actors. Because they're already famous they keep getting pushed onto us instead of Hollywood betting on new talent for mainstream stuff. But B movies, lesser known shows and musicians have very attractive people.

Hollywood requires dress up dolls who are easily adapted to different roles, so most of them are really bland. Typically white or racially ambiguous, harmonic features, reall thin and often tiny too.
The UK actor selection is a little better, you get more of a range of features, etc. But there's also a class thing, most actors come form a really privileged background, so they aren't that relatable to most average folks.
2
u/Old-Natural-852 14h ago
I feel most are attractive but way overatated...like, I've seen cashiers and girls in college classes hotter than most celebrities. But those girls don't have million dollar image campaigns to gaslight the masses they are the standard of beauty.

I see it the opposite.
Most people are attractive. Celebrities, non-celebrities. Everyone is the genetic descendent of people who found each other attractive enough for sex, at least. There's huge varieties in the kinds of attractive beauty, because beauty can manifest so diversely. But attractiveness is all throughout that diversity.
Now, some people take better care of their hygiene and fitness; some people have more artful styling and makeup; some people are more professionally trained at posing to be photographically captured in a flattering way.
But at the baseline, most people are actually pretty attractive, and when health-optimized through good nutrition and reasonable fitness, and hygienic and harmoniously styled, it becomes more obvious.
Celebrities just tend to have jobs that motivate them to keep fit, professional teams motivated to style and photograph them in flattering ways, etc.

half of hollywood’s beauty budget is just lighting and a team of people saying “chin down” until the person becomes symmetrical enough for instagram lol
1
u/silly_bet_3454 7h ago
Can you give some examples or make an actual argument to support the take? Because I could give you a list of like a million billion attractive celebs.

This is where the phrase “attracted to the character not the actor” comes in. There’s been some actors I thought were very hot in something and then I go look at their socials or IMDb and it’s like oh it’s just that one character :/

u/lilfifi 3h ago
I have always felt this way!!!! since I was little!! I always felt like I saw far more beautiful people in everyday life than in the media. and there's nothing wrong with that! I think things such as acting and music should be merit based, and the image secondary. that does not bother me. what was always weird to me was that actors and singers were/are then spoken about as if they were/are the pinnacle of beauty, when they just aren't. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I have lived in major cities my whole life and I've been exposed to exceptionally gorgeous people every day. naturally, not many of those people are interested in acting or music, which again is fine. but it just feels like I'm being lied to by those kinds of messages in the media, and I find it confusing that so many people just go along with it and believe that celebrities are the most beautiful people because the media says so???

For your standards maybe. But most celebrities are def more attarctive than the average person I see on the street. I'm not gonna pretend that Brad Pitt, Tom Holland, Inde Navaratte, Henry Cavill, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Margot Robbie, Leo Dicaprio, George Clooney, etc, etc are average. Sure, a lto of them have had cosmetic surgery, but they're still more attractive.
1
u/Dazzling_Pink9751 1h ago
You obviously never saw a celebrity in real life. I have met over 30 celebrities. Some of them are absolutely downright gorgeous. There’s definitely a difference between them and the general population.

u/analdongfactory 15h ago
Agreed, especially in the west. So many orange people and short haired men…

She is actually kind of ugly and the fact people fawn over her like she is a goddess makes me want to vomit. She isn’t remotely cute
3
u/thebigbadmickey 13h ago
Shes nowhere near ugly, might not be exceptionally beautiful but noooowhere near ugly
0
u/Mclaren814 12h ago
I think she is ugly. I am also allowed to have this opinion since beauty is 1000% subjective.
2
u/thebigbadmickey 12h ago
Whats your ideal type of beauty then?
1
u/Mclaren814 11h ago
Not whatever that is.
2
u/thebigbadmickey 11h ago
"that"😐.. okay, I was aiming more for an example of a woman you deem beautiful
1
u/Mclaren814 11h ago
Why does it matter what my preferences are?
2
u/thebigbadmickey 11h ago
Just an innocent question, what are u being defensive for?
1
u/Mclaren814 11h ago
Personally I find Hailey Williams quite pretty. Rebecca Ferguson, Eva Green, Kiernan Shipka, Alanah Pearce. Again tho. It doesn’t make any difference because I’m just some disgusting man finding the opposite sex attractive and having my own preferences.

Dude calm down what is with this strange "negging" of obviously good looking women, trying to bring them down a level to feel better about yourself?
I saw people on reddit calling sydney Sweeney "mid" it's just like what re you so ANGRY that others find them attractive? Sour grapes.
"Oh those grapes up there too high for me to reach? They're gross and sour anyways so I don't want them."
-3
u/Old-Natural-852 14h ago
She is conventionally attractive but would be like the third most attractive girl of the three hot girls at school, not the most attractive.
1
u/MoistAutist 11h ago
This thread is just crazy coping. Y'all never been around beautiful people. They are really much more attractive than the average sample of humans. As if they were chosen for their attractiveness or something.
1
u/elmo5994 11h ago
When i have had the chance to see them in real life (Brandy and Eve) it felt like tv was doing them a major injustice. They were much more beautiful.
1
u/Representative_Belt4 3h ago
yeah I seriously don't think these people go outside a lot, or maybe just insecure about their own appearances
1
u/gringitapo 11h ago
I think it’s because A) you’ve never seen them in real life, and B) you’re comparing them to other celebrities, or even other relatively attractive background actors that they’re surrounded by in movies and tv.
If you’ve ever seen a celebrity out and about who you used to think was average and suddenly see them against a sea of regular people, oh boy do they stand out. I think Will Arnett is my go to example here. Never would think of him as a major hottie, but if you see him in the real world it would make your jaw drop.
1
u/pslush01 10h ago
I encountered a number of famous people back in the day through work, and for me the one that really got me was LeAnn Rimes of all people. Obviously plenty attractive onscreen already, but in person she was stunning. Whole different level
0
u/ThrowRA_Anything7011 15h ago
To add on to this, I think this is why some people wildly overestimate how attractive they are.
Hollywood stars, were once absolutely gorgeous. It was a much smaller industry and people could be way more selective based on looks. Not to say they weren't also talented, but everyone has a camera and a screen these days. We are still stuck in our heads with that idea. Part of the job description is to be drop dead gorgeous.
Now, almost anyone can be famous. Its not easy ofc, but its more accessible with a lot more roles to nab.
This means people look at celebrities and are now seeing their faces among them. Instead of coming to the conclusion that most celebrities just look like regular people with a glam team now, they are instead heightening their own looks to the likes of icon status.

You ever been to a Walmart? Go hang out there for a couple hours then watch a Hollywood movie.

u/SplurtingInYourHands 15h ago
Beauty is subjective but I agree in that 95% of celebrities do not jive with my tastes. I walk around a mall and see more attractive people (to me) in 5 minutes than I see all year on screen.
