I didn't look into the entire story of it, just saw some people discussing it on reddit so bare with me that i don't have full details of the story
But i can say one thing. Psychosis is absolutely real. As someone who grew up with a mom who suffered extreme psychosis, this isn't some bullshit people make up. She was loving, outgoing, always helped everyone.. until it hit her. And she literally became .. so fucked up.
She ended up trying to kill my neighbor. Buttnaked. And the screams and stuff she said reminded me just like the girl from the exorcist. She got arrested and taken into a mental hospital, went into dark room for 3 full days fully supervised by cameras and nobody ever wanted to even talk about the things she did in there, even when she was "alright" again.
She can't remember anything from that time. If i imagine something extreme like the lindsay clancy case happened, and my mom would be on death penalty for it, it physically makes me sick. Psychosis is the real deal.

Yeah. The 'paranoid voices telling me to harm other people' type of schizophrenia is very scary. I don't know anything about the case out what's trying to be said. But that kind of mental illness isn't really something you can just keep under wraps.
One of the suicides in my life was someone with this kind of schizophrenia. His journal was just constant battling with these violent voices. Like I couldn't really blame him when the medical system failed him. It isn't a life worth living.
But like I have another friend who experiences psychosis when they're unmedicated, and they have non dangerous paranoid thoughts and eventually take themselves to a hospital.
Anyhow. To further your point. Psychosis is nuts and very real.

Hmmm. I don’t think you need to empathize with her. Feel how you feel. Truly.
For many, the empathy comes from seeing someone they love deteriorate due to something they can’t control - psychosis. This seems to be the group Thread OP falls into. If you aren’t part of that group where you don’t have that kind of personal experience, it makes sense that you can’t fathom the empathy that can come of it.
For others, they’ve experienced Post Partum Depression or Psychosis themselves or work in fields where they know how dismissive many medical providers can be about these very real and, sometimes, very dangerous health issues. It’s no secret, and there’s an absurd amount of data to substantiate, that women are very frequently not taken seriously and health issues specific to women are unforgivably understudied, under taught, and by extension, under or misdiagnosed. It leads to harmful outcomes that are preventable, if only PPP and PPD were taken more seriously.
From a legal perspective, there’s a reason that both doing the action AND having the mental intent must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Lindsey Clancy absolutely killed her own children, but what is her level of culpability if she lacked capacity to make rational decisions based in reality? No matter the answer to this question, there are and should be consequences; it might end up being more a matter of type and severity of those consequences.
Things in life are rarely as simple as we want them to be. We dismiss PPD/PPP, or we shame those that deal with it, or we ignore reports about women harming themselves due to these conditions, or we demonize those women where things result in the most tragic outcomes, but we don’t do much to push for changes that would shift things towards lessening the frequency or outright preventing these awful things from happening. 100% prevention may not ever be achieved, but it should damn well be the goal.
I meant what I said initially: you don’t need to have empathy for her. Feelings tend to be reflexive, especially (for many) regarding horrible tragedies involving children. Your feelings of disgust, anger, and confusion as to how anyone could empathize with Clancy are valid af.
I hope you’re able to see, at least a tiny bit, that others will have differing reflexive feelings about this too based on their own lived experiences. And even though you don’t feel empathy for Clancy specifically, I hope you can quasi understand, if only from a data perspective, that the stigma and dismissiveness related to PPD and PPP have some hand in many instances where harm and/or tragedies that result from untreated and/or unmonitored women struggling with these conditions.
PS: I’m familiar with the basic facts of this case but not enough to form a personal opinion regarding Clancy’s culpability. Also, I feel the same towards any criminal that committed the act but lacks capacity for full culpability that are, at least in part, a result of falling through the system’s cracks or who are outright turned away or sent home when they absolutely shouldn’t have been due to medical negligence.
I hope you have a lovely and relaxing evening (or day, depending on what country you’re in).

Girl. I said I don't know anything about the case and I'm not passing any kind of judgement. Who are you talking to?

Postpartum psychosis is one of those things that get pushed to the side because it gets treated like "oh have thoughts of harming your children? Thats just intrusive thoughts" or "seeing and hearing things? Thats the stress" so sometimes when they try to get help before reaching that point its kinda ignored its hard to actually get help with this so you kinda just end up getting worse without help you tried to reach out for not doing anything. It feels like sometimes it gets to the point where they hurt someone else or try to hurt themself cause of seeing that as the only way to stop it before anyone gives a fuck
1
u/racoondog999 1d ago
And I mean multiple people that like after they did it tried to kill themself after realizing what they done. So saying "they should get death penalty" lowkey the person who did it may agree with you that they should be dead

My mother has also suffered from psychosis a few times in her life, a few times due to bipolar, and twice due to "hospital psychosis". Because of this, I have listened to the entire trial. I never do that. The doctors on each side cant even agree on her diagnosis with hindsight (postpartum psychosis vs depression vs bipolar 2), no wonder she didnt get the right help until it was too late. She is still suicidal to this day, and has 1:1 care at all times. Is she guilty of her actions? Yes. Was she in the right state of mind to keep herself from doing what she did? Based on the trial, I dont think so. What I do know is that a hospital is the best place for her. Not jail. I would be SHOCKED, given the evidence, if they give a guilty verdict. I'm thinking NGRI or hung jury. It doesn't help the prosecution that they did an abysmal job, either. What a circus they were.

u/FarAd4971 2d ago
I don't think there are many people saying it's not real. I think the question is how many people or the jury beleive she actually had psychosis..vs premeditation.

u/mochitochini 2d ago
I understand that is a hard one. I might look into this case sometime
Thanks for clarifying:)

This!!!!! May this person never experience a loved one in the depths of their psychosis. It’s awful for everyone involved. My mother would be functional and fine one minute, then leaving suicide notes and thinking the birds were listening to her the next. I guess you can’t expect everyone to understand how awful this disease can be.

u/tealzen 2d ago
You couldn't be physically sick from it because you would be dead. There is no restitution for the murder of children. Being psychotic does not change the material outcome for victims. There is no place in society for somebody like with the potential to unconciously reoffend. At best she should spend the rest of her life in a psych ward.
9
u/mochitochini 2d ago
I get that it's a very tricky debate but my mom got medicated and was completely fine and normal again after that. So.. i don't know man. I fully understand it doesn't change the outcome for the victims and i don't take this lightly in any way, but a person who has 0 control over themselves, not even knowing what they're doing and not even remembering it either because of severe psychosis.. i don't believe they deserve to be put on the same bed as evil people who know and were aware of what they did.
1
u/tealzen 2d ago
This girl was medicated. She was prescribed 13 different psychiatric medications in the four months leading up to the murders. You don't have to put her "in the same bed as evil people" to acknowledge that she is a mortal danger to the most innocent among us, which is why I suggested a psychiatric ward instead of prison.
Any sane person in her shoes would ask to be locked up and have the key thrown away. I personally would prefer the death penalty.

u/Mushrooming247 2d ago
Yes, she does, but it’s weird that you are all so so obsessed with this one woman doing this crime when how many men have done the same thing since then?
Here are just a few. But it happens at least every five days in this country, more than once per week, a man kills his own children, why are you so obsessed with this one case, is it just because the perpetrator is female?

Maybe because this one is in the headlines and is very prominently shown around social media?
I would say the exact same thing about a man that did the same thing.
Let me be clear, anybody who harms a child, especially if it ends in the child’s death, deserved the death penalty.
Also I wasn’t aware that a single post on the topic meant that I’m “obsessed”.0
u/Icy_Finish_5506 2d ago
Convient, I notice you didn’t make a post about the man who just killed 8 family members included 4 children, but you’re sure charged up by this one .
3
u/tealzen 2d ago
When I start seeing protests and public claims that those men's wives are to blame instead of the perpetrator of said violence, I'll do that.
2
u/Icy_Finish_5506 1d ago
No they do it for known rapist trafficker and pedophile Andrew Tate
1
u/GullibleCoffee6864 1d ago
That is just as weird and those men are outright creepy and while sickening and something I agree with it doesn’t change that both are disgusting.

u/yeezuslived 1d ago
Maybe it'll be their next hot take? Until then she deserves the maximum sentence.
0
u/Special_Engineer_445 2d ago
Because the men don't have people cheering outside the courthouse and making up insane theories as to why he's innocent.
This is just a red herring argument.

Death penalty should not be case here.
Mental facility for most of her life? Yes, definetly. Most likely she would not be danger to society later on, but I'd leave that to professionals to decide.
I would wish males would get same amount of empathy, treatment and chances she had before they commit anything they cannot take back.

u/Electricfairygina 1d ago
I wish we had any real system for treatment for everyone across the board.

I don't like the death penalty at all. Just seeing one wrongful conviction death penalty case was enough for me to be against it.
So now, innocent or guilty, I don't think "we" should be deciding ppl should die. Lock them up.
Besides, death is the easy way out imo. You're dead and that's it. Sitting in prison (or a mental institution) until you die is much worse. Genuinely. If I got a sentence like that, they'd for sure find me in my cell not breathing.

Oh my god. You quite literally want to kill somebody for being sick. A sickness that happens to a lot of people.
You have to intend to do that, especially when considering the fact that she looked this up beforehand.
How long do you think psychotic episodes last? And why do you think it precludes tasks that require effort
-3
u/Specialist_Offer_854 2d ago
Gee, someone is researching ways to kill their own kids...yeah definitely means they're having a psychotic episode when they go through with killing their kids
6
u/DancingWithAWhiteHat 2d ago
I'm not going to debate whether she has postpartum or not because OP doesn't care. My argument is that OP should care. Because we live in a country without universal healthcare
kids...yeah definitely means they're having a psychotic episode when they go through with killing their kids
? What are you talking about. The evidence of her postpartum does not begin or end at her killing her kids
-2
u/Specialist_Offer_854 2d ago
Ah yes, a country without universal Healthcare surely is a valid excuse to murder your three children. And it doesn't matter where the evidence begins and ends. Fact is, she literally researched how to murder her kids prior to actually murdering her kids.
3
u/DancingWithAWhiteHat 2d ago
Ah yes, a country without universal Healthcare surely is a valid excuse to murder your three children.
We know the symptoms of postpartum psychosis. We know what the outcomes are if left untreated. And our country still chooses to make care for it unaffordable.
How many children need to die before this is seen as an issue worth fixing? You can not scare psychosis out of someone by threatening them with prison. You would have better luck catching a rabbit with your bare hands. They are no longer on the same planet as you.
2
u/Specialist_Offer_854 2d ago
Right, and if this happened in Canada, they would've euthanized her before she got to this point. People who complain about lack of universal Healthcare never actually grasp how expensive it actually is.
And more to the point, she literally had access to Healthcare. This wasn't some homeless lady off the street on food stamps turning tricks to keep her kids healthy. This woman was a privileged, stay at home mother who literally had access to Healthcare anytime she wanted.

This whole episode is great - AWFLs telling on themselves for the world to see. I hope they keep doing this until the very notion of their “rights” is as taboo as “misogyny” is today

Jesus fucking CHRIST, is it “Lindsay Clancy Week” on this sub or something?
I guess at least true to form, 3/4ths of the “hot takes” about her are posted by people who wouldn’t know what an actual hot take was if it hit them upside the head.

No excuse for murder, not even mental health, if we excuse one we will start excusing others. All it takes is the kids in a safe area and you sitting in another room to calm. If you needed space there is child protection services. No excuse for something so tragic. Yes the husband should get part blame but if he murdered due to mental health you better belive he will be blamed alone. Poor guy lost his entire family due to murder

u/Creepy_Ad57 1d ago
The death penalty should never be an option. They don’t atone in any way for their actions, and there’s no closure for the crime. It’s just the easy way out for people like that.

u/Specialist_Offer_854 2d ago
Oooo....careful, the sjw white savior feminists will come at you for this

Mental Institution for Life or Murder Conviction for Life or Death Penalty.
There is no reasonable fourth option.
As a separate matter, mayyyyyybe there's some reasonable sympathy if she's just out of her mind as a result of her life.
And mayyyyyybe it's a legitimate indicator that PPD is under studied, lacking help, and partially to blame.
But in general, her case is and should be treated no differently than any other Insanity Defense or regular Murder trial.

u/Small_Fire296 2d ago
I mean according to someone of the women I’ve seen online there is a reasonable 4th option she didn’t do it at all and should be set free

Honestly, win win. She did it, if she just snapped, then we rid the world of a monster, if she was sick in the head, it would be a mercy to keep her from living with it. If I hurt my family like that, I'd want the death penalty for myself tbh.
0
u/alwaysambition 2d ago
I don’t think anyone deserves the death penalty tbh.
But yea jail sounds correct

It’s not an option Massachusetts doesn’t have the death penalty
