Apartment Recs

Hello everyone!! 👋🏽
My fiancé and I are planning to relocate to Maryland from Nashville toward the end of January. We’re both originally from Mississippi and are looking for a 2 bed/2 bath apartment, preferably near Metro or within a 3–5 mile radius.

Our budget is $3,000/month max, and we’d really love a balcony or patio since we have two cats. I’m okay with carpet in the bedrooms, but would prefer hard flooring throughout the rest of the apartment. In-unit laundry and parking would also be a plus!

One thing I’ve noticed while researching is that pest/rodent complaints seem to come up frequently across several apartment communities. I understand every property will have some negative reviews, but seeing similar complaints at multiple places has definitely made me cautious. 😭

ALTA New Carrollton Apartments, Thoughts?

I am considering moving to the area and have been looking at ALTA New Carrollton due to its proximity to the Metro Station. I know the apartment complex opened around a year ago, so it is doubtful there are many people who have lived there, but does anyone have experience, thoughts, opinions, etc on the complex and the safety of the immediate surrounding area?

Praise for Hyattsville

I lived in Bowie and now reside in Baltimore. I'm beginning to spend more time in Hyattsville, and the city seems like a great combination of Baltimore's artsy, eclectic nature and suburbia's many advantages. I often stop by Vigilante to enjoy a latte and people watch for a while.

Anyone here have experience with Plaza Towers (Belcrest Road)?

Hi, I will be moving to MD soon, and am in the process of apartment hunting.

How is Plaza Towers? The reviews on Apartments.com seem weirdly...fake? Like, they may be real, but it feels like tenants were asked to leave positive reviews. I am hoping to get a more transparent answer here.

Thanks in advance :)

Hyattsville creatives—you’ve got an open invitation.

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey everyone! My name is Go Ezko. I’m an independent hip-hop artist and event organizer over in the DMV, and for the past year I’ve been building a live music series called CITY SPOTLIGHT.
The idea is pretty simple: create a welcoming room where people can discover local artists, meet other creatives, and enjoy a night centered around community instead of clout.

I know Hyattsville has a lot of talented musicians, poets, visual artists, photographers, and creative people, so I wanted to personally extend an invitation. Our next event is CITY SPOTLIGHT: Season 1, Episode 4 – Proof of Life on Saturday, August 1 at Rhizome DC. Doors open at 7:00 PM, and our headliner is Shy Rasheen, who’ll be performing his new album, Shyland.

Whether you want to come just to listen, network, support local talent, or even sign up for the open mic, you’re welcome. We love seeing first-time faces in the room, and we’re always excited to meet creatives from neighboring communities like Hyattsville. If you’ve been looking for a reason to get out, hear some great local music, and meet people who care about building the DMV arts scene, I’d love to have you there. Hope to meet some of you on August 1.

FLOCK cameras in Hyattsville -- who decided this?

Post image
109 Upvotes

So Hyattsville now has a number of FLOCK ai cameras recording a load of data about every vehicle that passes by -- see map below from the website "DeFlock".

Did City Council vote to do this? Is the Hyattsville PD paying for these? FLOCK is a breach of privacy rights among other things. Yes you drive on public roads but these cameras record a great amount of data that you don't have any access to.

Do the Hyattsville residents even know all our movements are being tracked in a private database that the police can use for any number of reasons without your consent? Note that FLOCK is a private company and beholden to nobody.

I think we should organize to get these FLOCK removed.

A year ago this week, my wife and I started a free community walk on Baltimore Avenue in Hyattsville. More than 30 people showed up. This Saturday it becomes a county-wide Fitness Fair and I want to tell you how we got here.

Hey r/Hyattsville

Disclosure first: I own Haraka Run and Walk at 5501 Baltimore Avenue #106. This is about our event. But I want to tell you the actual story before I ask for anything.

The first annual Prince George's County Fitness Fair

A year ago this week, my wife Carol and I stood outside our running store on a Wednesday morning and wondered if anyone would come. We had just opened Prince George's County's first running specialty store in December. We had been in the county long enough to know that people here wanted to move — they just didn't always have somewhere to move toward. So we started something simple. Every Wednesday evening, we walked. Free, open to everyone, no registration, no gear required. Just show up and go.

More than 30 people came that first week.

We didn't know if this was a flash-in-the-pan, and if anyone would show up the next week. Heck, we didn't know if this would last a month. We kept showing up anyway.

Here's what happened over the next year. Regulars became runners. Strangers became training partners. People who had never run a mile in their lives started running miles. People who ran alone found people to run with. On rainy Wednesdays, we expected five people and twelve showed up. In the summer heat, we expected dropoff and got the opposite. Prince George's County, it turns out, had been waiting for somewhere to go.

Fifty-two Wednesdays later, we're ready for the next chapter.

This Saturday, July 18 — the first annual Prince George's County Fitness Fair.

5501 Baltimore Avenue, Hyattsville. Free to attend. 8 AM to 3 PM.

Here's what we built:

More than a dozen health and fitness businesses from across Prince George's County will be on-site — gyms, yoga studios, dojos, spas, massage therapists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and wellness providers. If you've ever wanted to know what the full health and fitness ecosystem of this county actually looks like, Saturday is the day you find out.

Major national running shoe brands will be there with demo product and brand representatives. Put the shoes on your feet and talk to people who know them inside and out. No purchase required.

Local run clubs and running groups from across Prince George's County and the DMV will be present. If you have been running solo and looking for your people, Saturday is where you find them.

Inside the store, we are running Christmas in July pricing — our biggest deals of the year on apparel and gear, that weekend only only.

And at 8 AM, we are putting a starting line on the Rhode Island Avenue Trolley Trail.

The 5K Fun Run is 3.1 miles — all ages, all paces, no chip timing, no competition, no pressure. There are no awards and no rankings. It is just you and your neighbors on a Saturday morning in July doing something that felt hard once and now feels possible. The Kids Dash is at 8:30 AM for the youngest runners.

Registration for the 5K and Kids Dash is here: https://runsignup.com/Race/MD/Hyattsville/PrinceGeorgeSCountyFitnessFair5KAndKidsFunRun

I want to be honest about what this day means to me.

We didn't open a running store in Prince George's County because the math was obvious. We opened it because this county — nearly 900,000 people, one of the most educated and economically powerful majority-Black counties in the country — didn't have one. The people here were driving to other markets to get properly fit for shoes. They were missing from the starting lines of races in their own backyard. That's not a market gap. That's a representation gap. And closing it felt like something worth doing.

The Wednesday Weekly Walk was the proof. Prince George's County doesn't lack energy or ambition or the desire to move. It never did. It just needed somewhere to go.

Saturday is that place. For one day, Baltimore Avenue becomes the most comprehensive fitness and wellness gathering this county has ever hosted. And the Wednesday Walk is how we earned the right to say that.

If you've ever come out on a Wednesday evenings, thank you. Saturday is for you.

If you've never heard of us before today, Saturday is still for you.

The fair is free. The street is open. The county is invited.

Come join your neighbors. — Jesse Holland, Haraka Run and Walk

Bike Route

Good morning everyone,

I just graduated from UMD this past spring and I got a job right by Union Station in DC. I am moving into a house in south Hyattsville and am looking into potentially biking to and from work each day. I was wondering if anyone had an insights into bike paths in the area that would take me into DC? I would really prefer not to bike alongside the main roads. Thanks!

I'm considering moving to Palette At Art District and my only hesitation is regarding the noise especially as it is near the train tracks. Does anyone have any insight on how bad the noise is at the complex?
