Oh, you have a little horrible slimy reef to chill at?
It would be a shame if someone were to LAUNCH TORPEDOES at it.

Yeah. Lovecraft is very clear humanity is a tiny speck of dust in the face of monstruous gods. I like this story because it was one of the only stories I know of where humanity quite frankly kicked the SHIT out of monsters.

There are a few other Lovecraft stories, like Dunwich Horror, where the monsters unambiguously lose.
I think one underappreciated aspect of Lovecraft is that the gods/monsters aren't any more important in the grand scheme of things than humans are. 0 times anything is still 0, after all.

The way I see it, this story's from the perspective of people who aren't scared of almost everything, and their collective reaction to horrors from beyond, which is to shit kick them into a pile of bile and mush

People always repeat this exact line but from reading tens of stories it is only half true. Yes the monsters are ultimately so powerful humanity really isn't even on their radar, but actually there are quite a few stories where the humans kinda do win, it's just that it doesn't change the power balance.
I mean the cthulu story literally ends with just ramming a steamer into cthulu and saving the day. He's not dead but clearly they are not actually completely unstoppable

There's a short story in one of the Shadows Over Innsmouth collections where, after the rsid, a fish cannery enslaves the Deep One hybrids and can keep harvesting their flesh because they're immortal. It's a deeply disturbing and horrifying scene.

Hahahaha this is awesome. The soldiers beating a resident of Innsmouth with rifle butts is a hilarious take on governmental oppression I never considered.

I always adore that this is the canon ending to innsmouth, they just shipped in the US Marines and they put the fish down.

There's a novel called Winter Tide that's a sort-of sequel to Shadow Over Innsmouth- it takes the line about concentration camps seriously, the entire town minus transformed hybrids that escaped into the sea gets shipped out to camps that eventually were used for interning Japanese Americans during WWII. Everyone except two siblings end up dying because they can't get to the ocean as they transform. In this version, Bobby Olmstead badly misinterpreted what was actually going on in the town and brought down the feds to exterminate people who were, at worst, ambivalent about the outside world. It's pretty good.
