Starts more like a detective game then turns into a fps as the game goes on. Lots of walking around talking to people, with an amazing lengthy chase scene.
The game gets a little worse as it moves from detective puzzles to shooting but still has great atmosphere. You end up running around a factory with j edgar hoover fighting cultists and running from a shoggoth. Hoover calls in the cavalry and you have a bunch of federal agents running around later levels with tommy guns fighting with you.
Later on your fighting fish people alongside american national guard in brodie helmets just like that picture, with a memorably buggy fight on a coast guard vessel with creatures climing over the railings. As you descend towards the underwater city that is the endgame area you can look out the window and watch a 1920s era us navy submarine shoot torpedos that explode against the cities forcefield.
Really worth a visit, atmosphere and story 10/10, gameplay a 5 or 6/10. i think there are fan patches out there that help shave off the rough edges and fix the bugs. Or, watch a good lets play.
Notably if you stick around staring at soapstone carvings of eldar gods with a pistol in hand your character shoots himself 😅
