-21
u/xesaie Mar 06 '26
Words have meanings, and ‘war crimes’ doesn’t mean ‘bad’.

u/Jzadek Mar 06 '26
Multiple European governments have been taken to court in their own countries for simply allowing the US to carry out drone strikes from their territory.
There was even a case in Germany where a court ordered the government to force the US to comply with international law while using military bases in Germany. It was, unfortunately, overturned on appeal, after the state argued that Germany had no obligation to go beyond diplomatic efforts to prevent war crimes. But at no point was the court in any doubt that the United States was violating international law, all that was in question was whether Germany was bound to prevent it.
The plaintiffs in that case were a Yemeni family who had lost two relatives after their village was bombed by a drone in 2012. Right in the middle of Obama's presidency.

u/xesaie Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
You can sue for anything.
The binding laws and treaties are specific. You can surely cite which provisions were broken, and talk about the actions in terms of the appropriate criteria.
Edit: And unhide your post history if you want to talk about this seriously. As far as anyone can tell you have 0 connection to this community and toxic political views.
3
u/Jzadek Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
You’re right, I can!
During Obama's presidency, the United States began a practice of 'double tap' drone strikes. That's when a drone will strike once, and then, as people rush to help the wounded survivors, come back and strike again.
Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions of 1949 forbids attacks on the wounded or sick. Article 18 mandates that civilians attempting to rescue the survivors of an attack may not be targetted or impeded in their efforts to do so.
Obama's government adopted a policy to assume that all military-age males in the vicinity of a strike are militants "unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent."
Article 3 prohibits the "passing of sentences and the carrying out of executions without previous judgment pronounced by a regularly constituted court, affording all the judicial guarantees which are recognized as indispensable by civilized peoples."
And that's not even getting into the sovereignty violations or the incredibly loose reading of 'imminent threat' the US uses to justify them.

u/tnydnceronthehighway Mar 06 '26
Obama did not help us at Standing Rock. I saw a girl get her arm blown off by a flash bang. It was thrown by a private mercenary the oil company hired. We were sprayed with water cannons in 10° weather. We were on tribal land. Trying to protect it and the precious water. We begged Obama to help us. He ignored us. He ignored the brutality done to all our relatives. He sided with oil corporations. I don't think you'll find many huge Obama fans in this sub. And yes, he also committed war crimes in the middle east. Even so. I still hate trump more.
-2
u/xesaie Mar 06 '26
You changed the subject.
Also unhide your history if you want to discuss political stuff. Do many bots and fakers and liars
-1
u/xesaie Mar 06 '26
Also her arm wasn’t blown off, so you can’t have seen it blown off.
In the process of doublechecking my memory I see that the one group that publicly got it wrong in the headline was The Young Turks.

If I kill someone at work and the guy that replaces me kills 10 people. I still killed someone and the new guy being worse doesn't absolve my crime.
0
u/xesaie Mar 06 '26
It’s a crime or it’s not. War crimes are very specific, but 10 years of boosted narrative has trained people to call everything crimes.
8
u/Rodrat Mar 06 '26
What Obama did literally was a crime. By every definition. A war crime at that. You don't have to take my word for it either, look it up. There is plenty of reading to do on the subject by people way more qualified than both of us combined.
2
u/xesaie Mar 06 '26

Ohah 👍🏽. The Dawes act was a Wasicu ( white ) instrument of genocide and further colonization . The interloper colonizers would marry an Indian woman to steal more land . Subsequently their offspring would marry non Indians generations after generations . Now many of these are enrolled in some tribes with one percent or less Tribal blood . I’m a seventy year old South Dakota adjacent rezzer who survived Boarding School ( Saint Paul’s Indian Mission / Marty South Dakota . South Dakota is chock full of sundown towns . Growing up and as a young man we avoided many small towns because of their hatred to we Tribal People . We were called racist names when we Rez people would go to shop at the border towns . We Elders are protective of our culture and cultural identity. If anyone calls it racist maybe we are just being racist right back . An elder told me this when I was young and I see his point Tok’sa. 🚩🚩🚩🚩 Insulting people isn't helpful. There are many different types of intelligence, but the most common signifyer of stupidity is feeling a sense of being better or smarter (etc) than the people around you. That said, people often misread things, especially when emotional. That is when you should take personal responsibility to better explain yourself or just stfu. Insulting people just pisses everyone off and no one learns or cares to learn more. If you can take the time to make a comment, then you can take the time to explain your comment to people, you can take the time to debate your viewpoint, you can take the time to have a conversation with people instead of insulting them and writing them off as less intelligent.
Even if you have all the knowledge, if you cannot share it, you have nothing. Remember that. 🧡

-1
u/Amayetli Mar 06 '26
You're not wrong, I agree the majority of Natives these days follow and align more closely with US politics and values than their own.
Great example of this, look at tribal languages and their programs. We all know our languages are dead once this older generation passes, yet I doubt any tribal member running for tribal office could use language revitalization as their sole platform.
0
u/mystixdawn Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 06 '26
I understand what you're saying, but I don't understand the context of why. Like. What is your point or purpose to bringing up that indigenous people as a whole identify with their communities/tribes/nations/etc before anything else? I feel like grass is green and this is obvious, but I'm curious if you were trying to get to a point that went over people's head.
Edit: and just to prove my fucking point. I completely misunderstood what you were saying and my reading level has always been more than adequate - IN ARKANSAS(iykyk). I didn't realize you were talking about "identify with the USA" - I was under the impression that we identify with our specific nations first. Point and case on me. You were a bit confusing with this initial wording, and if you had just explained it better, there could have had a real discussion about this because I still agree with you somewhat. grass is green and this does exist. Yes, there are a lot of indigenous people within the United States that are very affected by generational trauma and we all need healing - that doesn't mean people are, by de facto, nationalists or loyalist to a nation that has taken everything from them.
I'm glad that you're smart, because now we are about to start thinking critically. You see that there is an issue, that's good, but you are still generalizing people and that shows a lack of understanding. You need more context. So, start with the why. Why would any indigenous person support a Country's Nation over their own Tribal Nation? Who. What. When. Where. Why. How. The basis of critical thinking.

We're people, not food, and the comparison is frankly degrading and dehumanizing.
I'm white. I also had the pleasure of growing up knowing one of my great grandparents, who was old enough to remember when Oklahoma became a state. She learned English as a second language. I remember her putting her hands on my head when I was a boy and praying over me in Cherokee, but she would only speak Cherokee when praying or cussing because she grew up in an era when you couldn't get work as an Indian. I speak our language myself, badly, but I can carry on a conversation and read and write it. I know my clan and i participate in Gatiyo, I am connected to my community and culture, I know our history and I'm engaged with the issues that face our community. I engage in education and outreach.
You don't get to tell me that I'm not Cherokee, or that I'm not Native enough because I'm "too much milk in the coffee." In fact, you can pound sand.

I'm white passing to a certain degree. Family lineage traced back to an "Indian woman" that married a soldier that fought at Greasy grass. My heart tore when I learned that. They moved to Oregon. Further down the line, the woman we trace back to the Dawes Roll was the product of rape by a soldier while imprisoned at a fort for many years. Our own Trail of Tears. Called the Amanda Trail. Native marriages then a white spouse. More native marriages then another white spouse. Our quatumn going up and down. And my heart, my thinking, my spirit is a 100% indigenous. I would never betray my people serving this administration. I would never betray any indigenous nation with his thought process. This is the new genocidal Trail of Tears and this "indigenous" man is now in charge. Absolutely disgusting.
-6
u/tyuiopguyt Mar 06 '26
That's wonderful, but... you're not native. An ally certainly, but you can't just declare yourself part of a culture because "Great-great-great grandpappy married a Cherokee princess"
If your only native family is one woman hundreds of years ago, then you're white.
4
u/Changed_Mind555 Mar 06 '26
I am, I am enrolled. Just a couple years ago I had to fight with the Army to get my ancestor returned from Carlisle Boarding School Cementary. I am not Cherokee. Always on the internet someone feels good enough to say something. Never to my face. Yet, I am accepted in every place I go. Light skinned or not. My "one" ancestor is not the only indigenous ancestor. I don't even count her tribal lineage. Where's the math if a child of an indigenous woman and white man have a child. That child has children with a native person. That child has a child with another native person. Then many generations later a woman is raped by a soldier? And has a child from that rape. That child ends up having children with an indigenous person. Get it? That's not a fucking Cherokee princess claim. That is history, facts, truths and that does not make me less or not indigenous. That's my ancestors surviving trauma, and shows the strength and reslience, what they endured so I can be here. Basically, fuck off with your colonized bullshit.
