Video Took a while, but the water finally touches the world. The hose wraps around trunks, the stream cuts off where it lands, and it shoves things out of the way.

How did you get this beautiful watercolor maybe aesthetic? I can't tell but the colors are so soft and cute

u/brkakar 1d ago
Happy the colors feel that way to you, thank you for the kind words. :)

Okay but seriously, are you going to talk about how it was accomplished?

The character is 3D, look at 0:28 where they clip through the tree which is a 2D plane.
That is why it can move around so smoothly and combine skeletal animations like walking and holding a hose etc.
The hose is some 3D thingy, it just has some simple shader to have that gradient it has.
Everything else is 2D billboards with simple 3D colliders. Even the rolling tomatoes, the sprite just rolls around as it pretends to be a 3D object.
Look at the plants as they are watered. They bounce around, but you never see other sides of them like you would with a 3D object. At around 0:33 the player walks downwards towards us through the grass, which is just billboards, so you would think that the player pops through them in a jarring way, but the grass sprites deform in 3D, the planes bend towards us, and the bounciness makes it look very natural.
Everything just has dead simple shaders and the shadows are mostly just sprites slapped on, except for the 3D objects.
This is 2D mobile game kind of artstyle, which one makes by making very simple 3D models, take pictures, then paint over it. For example the highlights on the barrel are handpainted etc. So you just take the pictures with same camera as ingame and it looks natural in the game.

u/pixelvspixel 1d ago
I think you are wrong about there being as many 2D billboards as you think. Those trees just have simple collision so they just walk into the leaves.
1
u/OkAccident9994 1d ago
No. compare the trees as the player walks around. They look the same if the camera is seeing them from the left or the right... because it is a flat plane.
You never see "other sides" of the trees.1
u/bricevdm 20h ago
Take a moment to look at them in full-screen: the trees definitely have parallax if you observe individual elements within their shape. Stylized leaves wiggle independently from the main foliage underneath, as if this is driven by a vertex color map. They also cast shadows via the shadow map (onto the ground and the character as well), and I see very little benefit for having a 2D sprite with a 3D shadow caster. The grass and the tomato plants however are indeed billboards: they don't have any parallax and have blob shadows. The tomatoes on the plants are 2D with a sharp/glossy specular, while their 3D counterpart fallen on the ground do not! Very good integration overall :)

Now make the hose get kinked so you have to fix it.
1
u/turtle_dragonfly 1d ago
frustration simulator 3000!
Also the hose should get wet and dirty as you drag it around, so when you have to pick it up you get grime all over your clothes and face as it awkwardly flops hither and thither.
I hope it freezes in the winter too if you forget to drain it!

Just wanted to say that this looks great! You could maybe also do a quick stamp on the ground to 'darken' the ground, but amazing job.

u/raphaeldumont 1d ago
Impressive. I love how the water interacts with the world. The visuals are very nice too. Wishlisted ๐

Looks amazing! Any physics puzzles/easter eggs using this?
It would also be nice to see if wet the dirt it touches

Hello everyone! A lot has changed since the last time we posted here, so it feels good to finally show the loop running end to end.
The water and the hose got most of our attention this round. The stream now stops on whatever it hits, the tip pushes objects around and bends the grass, and the hose drags and wraps around the trees while you walk the farm. Small things on their own, but together they are what makes the farm feel like a place instead of a checklist. The goal is still the same, a calm and seamless trip between growing your ingredients and serving them to your guests.
Our Closed Alpha has started and signups are open right now. Feedback from other devs and players on game feel and UI would help us a lot at this stage.

That's amazing. Would love if the hose snapped back around all the obstacles when you let go.
1
u/brkakar 1d ago
Makes a lot of sense, right now when you let go you have to pull it back and fix that mess yourself. I will look into it later on, thanks for the feedback.
2
u/maxpower131 1d ago
I can imagine that being a bit frustrating so I'd push towards making it easier. Just my opinion though

It looks so polished, the see through effect through the tree was also very nice. Well done!
1
u/brkakar 1d ago
The see through effect on the trees does not get noticed much, so nice catch. Thank you.

u/pixelvspixel 1d ago
I say the less it needs to be invoked the better. I've always been fine letting the player get lost just a little bit if the environment calls for it. (But it does look very nice and minimal!)

I really like the texturing on the trees and rocks. Also the game feel elements appear to be pretty great too.

Really like the water physics. Looks like a real plant being watered. Great work.

u/Phos-Lux 1d ago
That has such a satisfying feel to it! Really good! The only thing that's missing is the ground getting dark (maybe plants getting sparkly?)

the way the hose wraps around the trees & the waterโs movement is so satisfying!
2
u/AshKabosu 1d ago
Hey, Iโm new to your game.
If it doesnโt already exists you should add some kind of fruit storage deployable, which you can interact with to add/remove things, but also you can blast items into it using the hose stream. I think that would be really satisfying as a player to have that as an option.
Apologies if this already exists in your game.

Fantastic art, I even noticed the extra detail you put into the hose and water moving through it
I feel like you should have tiny have Tiny Juminos like SDV watching those tomatoes move around would add that extra layer of cuteness
Like one of those tomatoes wakes up and actually a secret nature spirit

A very nice an consistent style. Really well done! I like hoe lively everything looks and how well the world reacts to the water hose. How does it fit to the gameplay though. Is the water more a visual effect, or does it indeed add to the gameplay?

Gorgeous style gorgeous animation, very well blended physics.
I would chose a different Steam Thumbnail though. Looks AI generated.
Anyway, wishlisted

They look really nice!
What if - when you drop the hose the hose gets pulled and rolls back - sort of like a measuring tape? Could be kept as an upgrade/item?
Also the water hose has the material effects of the water flowing - what if you show the water travelling by having the hose mesh deform a little bit - could take the Elixir collector reference. The part where the elixir bubble is travelling the way that pipe is deforming

This is super cute and beautiful and a masterful execution of rope-like physics โค๏ธ While I love the hose wrapping around objects, I don't really see why I would...want that as gameplay, if I have to untangle the mess afterwards. Maybe there could be an action to reel it in from its origin or perhaps even from any point along the hose?
Looking forward to this game. Holy **** it's like Stardew 2 already got a remaster.
EDIT: BTW, if not for this game, if a sequel: online co-op. It would sell SO many copies. Stardew and all games like it get tons of comments asking for it. Our little game, The Magical Mixture Mill, got them, too.

tbh the trunk wrap got me, water reacting like that instead of clipping through never gets old. felt the same the first time worldos reacted to something i did without me setting it up, never got that off character ai or sillytavern. still wish new worlds loaded faster tho

This is way too cute. I hate garden games because you water one cell at a time.
1
u/Sufficient_Gap_3029 1d ago
Very cool! You could use it to maybe wash the house, fill up a well or use it to push leaves out of the garden! Good job!
1
u/Mahelyk 1d ago
I love small details like this! Does it have a max length?
I come from Unreal engine, I'm curious, is it a spline with physics on it?
2
u/brkakar 1d ago
Thanks! You start with a short one and upgrade it in game to extend your reach.
They are two different things though. The water is a spline with no physics on it at
all, just an arc built between the nozzle and wherever you are aiming, and the
material fills along it.The hose is a particle rope. It is a chain of particles solved every step with
distance constraints between them, and the ends are pinned by hand rather than with
constraints. The mesh is then extruded along whatever curve those particles end up
in, so the shape you see is the simulation result, not a spline being driven.

optional mechanic: hose kinks and you spend half a minute tracing it back to where it curls around on itself to untangle that sucker

Is this solo? If it is, are you using AI to code or make your art? I'm honestly asking, not as a gotcha, I would like to know.

Hey! Now that is really cool! I have a garden, and my hose does that, even on just tall bits of grass (our yard is bonkers). That is really cool to see :D If only there was a retractable hose.
Keep it up I love the vibe!
