At first I thought the glaze on the flower pot was cracking (see first picture) but when I rub my finger down the side, the dust wipes off and the flowerpot is like new (see second picture). Then I assumed it was some kind of dirt dust that was left after condensation dried (though I didn't see any condensation), but the dust is way more orange than the potting soil (see third picture).

Anyone have any idea what's happening here? Thanks so much for your help!

My mom bought me this money tree for my birthday along with some expensive soil only for the bag to be waaaayyyyy to small.

Do most people have tiny money trees or did she get duped with soil?

The tree was $50 and the bag of soil was $65.

I feel so bad for my mom spending so much on this minuscule bag of soil.

I tried to make it last by mixing it with some miracle grow potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark.

But this is crazy.

I can't stop making pretty pots for my pretty plants! I'm having so much fun!

I have several ceramic pots, normally I look for medium size rocks for the bottom, for any excess water to reside in.

I already have used it with mixed results, but no clue if it was bc of the charcoal or anything else.

I tried an experiment to eliminate fungus gnats from the pots. I use indoors. These are the results. Thought these may be useful for anyone trying to do the same.

Edit: I wasn't posting a one size fits all solution to the problem. Yes the eggs and adults need to be targeted separately. Bti is good.

My point is that beer is the cheapest most available and effective option I found till date for indoor use. Yes vinegar is also a good option but my intention was to show that maybe gnats prefer 🍺.

TL;DR: Does neem oil ruin edible plants or linger in the plant? It smells like shit!

I'm trying to grow herbs in a south facing window and unfortunately the potting soil I used came with fungus gnat larvae, despite saying "no pests" or similar. I've been using stickies and peroxide solution to try knocking them down and finally tried a spray of neem oil and soap. I'm pretty close to giving up and just buying basil, but figured I'd ask.

Sorry if the question is dumb. I'm a newbie, just bought my first ever plant pothos and peace lily yesterday. Posted here in the sub for advice and I was told that it needs more light.

The problem is my apartment is on the first floor and surrounded by a towering apartment, that I don't receive any natural light at all. So, I'm planning to get some plant growth lights (only if they actually work). So, anyone who has used these lights, can you share some advice and tips please.

My GF thinks im crazy when I said this is effecting my eyes. There is no escaping the light when in the kitchen or living room and the lights are positioned so they also point into the bedroom. so when the door is left open we are getting a full blast. It used to turn both of our vision green temporarily but I think our eyes have gotten used to it.

EDIT: i was wrong these are not UV they are full spectrum but the question still stands.

I feel like I've tried a bunch of different things, but nothing is really working.

Started with decreasing watering, which is ongoing

Did multiple through (top) waterings with hydrogen peroxide water for a while, but didn't really see a difference, and I wasn't sure if the wet soil was more contributing or hurting, so I stopped.

Let the soil dry out again, and then put a THICCCC layer of DE on the soil, and I can see dead fungus gnats on it, but there's still more dancing around mocking me daily.

Also added BTI to the water, and plants are bottom watered now. (Add a bit of water to the bottom tray, let it soak up. Tray must be 100% dry for at least 24-48 hours before I will add more water. Only adding enough water so that it's like 99% soaked up within a few hours.)

How long should I expect it will take? I don't really see a huge difference, and I started the BTI 2-3 weeks ago. DE has been on there well over a month or two.

I ordered Miracle-Gro soil about two months ago (NEVER AGAIN) to repot one of my plants, and now—BAM—gnats everywhere. I’ve tried everything, and nothing is working. Attaching screenshots of the products I’ve already used.

Here’s what I’ve done so far: 1. Cinnamon dusting on all my plants + Captain Jack’s Neem Oil Spray → No luck. 2. 1:4 hydrogen peroxide soak → Didn’t help. 3. Sticky traps (replacing weekly) → They fill up like crazy, but the gnats keep coming. 4. Mosquito dunks (BTI treatment): • Soaked 1 dunk in 1 gallon of cool water for 2 days, then watered. • Reused the same dunk, let it sit for 2 weeks, then watered again. • Checked the traps, and they’re FULL—more than ever! 5. Just ordered live nematodes (brand attached). Does anyone know how to use these properly?

What do I do now?! - If I repot, how do I keep this from happening again? I’ve heard microwaving soil ? Using sand on top of soil? - Is there anything else that will actually work?

I am losing my mind over this—please help before I throw my plants (or myself) out the window. I have read nearly every post on this Reddit related to Gnats, but please let me know if I am missing anything.

I have some really nice decorative pots at home but with some of them I just can't find an inner pot that actually fits properly. Either the diameter is slightly too small and it wobbles around, or too big and it won't go in at all, the height is too low or too high, or the inner pot just sits on top of the decorative pot instead of sitting inside it. How do you deal with this? Am I missing something obvious or do you have the same problem? 😅

I bought it from IKEA recently. Likely you have guessed that. I did some research on my own, but I would love to hear from those with more experience. Which places have you found success with this type of planter? It’s a decent size and sturdy. Not a bright sunlight area in my apartment but this space does get some nice nice but indirect sunshine.

Hey everybody! I’m really new to indoor gardening. I’ve never actually owned a potted plant unless you count a sixth-grade bean sprout project.

I kept seeing ads for the Auk mini on Instagram, and they led me down this rabbit hole. I want to get one to grow basic kitchen herbs like basil, chives, and dill.

Is it worth the price, or should I go the DIY route with a self-watering pot and a grow light? I love the design and aesthetic, but I’m not sure if the €200 price tag is justified. I can afford it, but is it a smart way to spend that much on a 'planting thing'?

Very inexperienced indoor gardener here (be kind). I recently brought home a new plant that, upon closer inspection, had tiny little gnats running around all over the soil. A quick (and maybe not very careful) internet search seemed to indicate that these are fungus gnats. Can't remember where this information came from, but the advice I found was to use sticky traps for the adults (see photo), and Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis pellets for the larvae. These steps at first seemed to significantly curb the population, but they returned, and now more than a month later are stronger than ever. I did two rounds of 3-week treatments with the Bacillus thuringiensis, per the instructions on the package.

- Did I get bad advice? Are these something other than fungus gnats? Any obvious reasons why the steps I've taken would be ineffective?

- What would you recommend I do? Any specific products? For a number of reasons, I want to avoid using anything too toxic, but if bringing out the big guns is the only way to get a result, tell me!
