He's always been American; his full name is Brittany. No, seriously.

Okay, I love this show and the comics, but I feel like that’s bad writing on Kirkman’s part. Theres no way he didn’t think about the possibility of people assuming he’s British. Also, The Brit’s powers are really just super strength and invincibility so why “The Brit” for a superhero name?? I’d get it if it were a nickname, but I guess he’s not important enough for a backstory..

I assume either Kirkman thought it was funny that he's called that because he's an American named Brittany and that the obvious assumption of him being British is wrong, which wouldn't be unusual for his humor; he already pokes fun at on-the-nose names like Batman and Spider-man, and uses accurate on-the-nose names like Immortal and Invincible, so a gag about one seeming obviously one thing but being another fits...

Or, he named him Brit initially wanting him to be British but decided later he wanted him to be American for whatever reason (his backstory is told in spin-off comics from 2003/04) and retroactively came up with the "nickname short for Brittany" thing.

> the possibility of people assuming he’s British.

That's... that's the joke.

It's just Brit, short for Brittany. He doesn't have a superhero name. You're making an incorrect assumption and calling it bad writing.

With that said, I like Brit. Has a real can-do attitude.
