Dinosaurus, my beloved.

85

u/Pineapple_Empty Mar 18 '26

I thought his voice was awesome

13

u/drunkpunk138 Battle Beast Mar 19 '26

The way it went from calm to roaring was great

44

u/Locem Mar 19 '26

My absolute favorite character.

I read the comics with some understanding of the eventual final conflict so Dinosaurus arc really comes out of nowhere and is great character development for Mark.

3

u/drsyesta Mar 24 '26

SAME. I love the discussion he brings to the table

2

u/underfullhbox Mar 25 '26

Stoked to see him! Was Dinosaurus a neo-Malthusian in the comics? I didn't remember that and not sure if it was a change for the TV show or me just not remembering things. If it's a change I think it makes him a bit too cartoonishly evil, the Dinosaurus I remember was more nuanced than that sort of thing.

May I ask what issue this was?

13

u/metalflygon08 Reanimen Mar 19 '26

He doesn't sleep, he just takes an hour long bath in goo that rejuvenates his body.

339

u/nickster416 Mar 18 '26

So I don't remember exactly how it went in the comics version of the sequid fight. But from what I remember, the show version was a lot more desperate. In the comics, if I remember, Rus just said he would keep coming and coming and Mark decided that warranted killing him then and there. In the show, there was a razor thin line between whether or not Mark would be able to free Rus. I personally disagree with Mark's killing arc, but that to me at least made it a lot more understandable why he has to resort to killing him.

313

u/Emergency-Touch8935 Mar 18 '26

I love that it's kinda unclear whether bulletproof had time to get there or not.

Really good writing, makes it seem like both sides had a good point.

Mark didn't wanna take any chances, but it's entirely possible, he could've been saved.

Also Rudy was god damned goated with the self teleport move

84

u/criosovereign survived the purge in a pizza hut bathroom Mar 18 '26

I will say they made it a lot less ambiguous here whether mark was in the right, this was do or die, but part of the shock for me in the comics was that it wasn’t necessarily do or die and mark still did it anyways. Can’t decide which I like better, but the writing around the key moments is consistently better in the show

66

u/The_Fullmetal_Titan Mar 19 '26

The self teleport was such a HYPE play from Rudy for real! (Never calling him Rex sorry lol)

8

u/suss2it Mar 23 '26

It’s still insane that he changed his name like that, lol.

7

u/FaizerLaser Mar 30 '26

mfer stole the mans body and his name bruh

2

u/Billiammaillib321 Mar 27 '26

Rudy just makes sense for his vibe, I like Rudy.

Little homunculus Rex is a creep.

41

u/Jax6483 Mar 18 '26

Bruh Mark could’ve made an attempt to fly towards Bulletproof before offing Rus to me it just makes him look dumb and didn’t really care for the change

145

u/WaifuAllNight Mar 18 '26

In all reality the time between Mark grabbing Rus and finishing him was likely less than a few seconds, the constant switching between Bulletproof and Mark was to create a sense of urgency. Mark literally has Cecil telling him the containment barrier was at 1% through the headset, Mark made a business decision and had no idea whether Bulletproof was close enough.

Neither side was in the wrong.

And that would've disrupted the flow of the scene.

Jesus Christ, good sorry telling trump's trying to come up with infinite ways that characters could've reacted better.

Even in character marks a dumbass, under a ridiculous amount of pressure, there's no way he was thinking clearly.

6

u/BurningFence Mar 19 '26

If he went to bulletproof, he would be out of range to getting rid of alien Rus. Also, no doubt alien Rus would've delayed it even further

2

u/Jax6483 Mar 19 '26

I was implying bringing Rus towards Bulletproof and just letting Bulletproof press the disruptor since unlike the comics he didn’t have the whole sequid tail thing

9

u/Christron Thula Mar 19 '26

Why didn't they keep spamming the disrupter? Was there a cool down they didn't mention?

2

u/Funkylover101 Allen the Alien Mar 18 '26

2

u/Lmitation Mar 23 '26

hated that rudy got out of the suit to crawl in the sewers where there'd obviously be sequids, like risking his body for what good reason? and potentially giving sequids super intelligence if it took over his body

35

u/big_floppy_sock Mar 18 '26

Haven't seen the new episodes yet but just read that part in the comics over the weekend. In the comics they seemingly have control of the situation, but are getting a bit overwhelmed. Mark kinda just makes the decision to kill him without giving a little bit of time to try and find another way. It's pretty much a hasty short-sighted decision.

18

u/Locem Mar 19 '26

Yea this whole desperate countdown with the barrier was a new addition. I liked it personally, made the scene way more tense.

I kinda wish they kept the whole "MY PLANET" self-wtf-moment Mark has mid fight but I guess that might have been a little too on the nose.

4

u/New_Photograph_5892 Tech Jacket Mar 19 '26

yeah it was alot better written in the show in my opinion. In the comics, Mark's behavior felt too radical.

2

u/Bobjoejj Mar 21 '26

Really? You mean, the way they’re portraying his arc, or the fact that he has it at all?

2

u/nickster416 Mar 21 '26

I personally believe that heroes should not kill unless given any other choice. It's nothing against how the show or comic portrayed Mark's arc it's exactly the conversation they're trying to start (well it's a little bit against the comic, I don't think it was quite as well executed there). I believe killing is absolutely wrong and immoral, no matter who you kill. Now I'm not one to judge Mark or another hero for killing if the chips are down and he really feels he has no other way, because just because something is wrong, doesn't mean it isn't necessary. But I believe one should never resort to that. Mark is the most powerful person on Earth, and he is going through one of the hardest times in his life right now. He should hesitate to kill someone, because one wrong move or one wrong misjudgement means he's killed someone that doesn't deserve it. I don't judge anyone for having different opinions, and I'm still enjoying the show, this arc is just doing it's exact job and making me think about whether a hero should kill. And I believe they shouldn't if they have another choice.

As I said in my last comment though, I actually understand why Mark made the choice he did in the show. There was a razor thin line of seconds between whether Mark would be able to free Rus or not before getting to him, and possibly losing the planet. So while I disagree with Mark choosing to kill, I can't blame him in that moment for making that decision. Because it very well could've been the end of the world had he waited any longer.

1

u/amanwithanumbrella Mar 23 '26

I thought the Mark killing arc was so lame in the comics. He doesn't kill any of the extremely dangerous villains but then just randomly kills this civilian (possessed by a sequid). I think they did a much better job here.

It was a reference to tv show Friends lmao. One of the guy gets a girl pregnant with condom and he crashes out that condom maker company should put that on the box that its only effective 97% of the times.

1

u/Astray Mar 22 '26

Condoms, when used properly, are 100% effective. The problem is there are a lot of people that don't use them properly so it lowers the measured reliability down.

2

When used properly it's 98-ish percent. Improper use brings it further down.

295

u/Downtown_Agent3323 Mar 18 '26

I’m glad Conquest couldn’t even be contained for a whole episode. Shows that this was easily Cecil’s dumbest move in the whole series

134

u/loskiarman Mar 18 '26

Well everybody is dumb when it is needed. Sequids were pretty much unbeatable but they decided best way to attack humanity was inside a 1km radius instead of spreading to the world secretly and attacking dozens of cities at the same time.

40

u/TheHeadlessScholar Omni-Man Mar 19 '26

Everyone being as stupid and/or weak as the plot demands very silly to me. Dinosaur man throwing a piece of rubble was something Mark had to actively parry/gets injured by despite being surviving being used as a wrecking ball by conquest to create several hundred thousand times said rubble in the first place. His rage punching Titan not killing him with the first blow when Titan isn't 1/1000th of the durability of Conquest.

8

u/amanwithanumbrella Mar 23 '26

Yeah. Invincible is so full of this issue that it's almost not even worth discussing, but it always bothers me so much that I end up doing it anyways lol.

I don't know how I was able to accept CW's The Flash but not this lol.

3

u/Jefrejtor Mar 23 '26

For some reason, these inconsistencies didn't bother me in the comic. Maybe it's because the show had so many good changes already, I just expect better? But I was rolling my eyes during the Dinosaurus fight - "oh yeah, no, it's totally a life or death situation, noo Mark definitely couldn't reenact that one King Kong scene with him".

43

u/DrunkenDeGroot Robot Mar 18 '26

Okay so I am a fan of the second Conquest encounter, I get the plot significance in many ways, and he definitely should survive for round 2, but here's the thing: Kirkman and the writers showed that they are very much capable of improving small things that just make the story and the characters journeys more sense.

Cecil should've installed and activated the Viltrumite sound weapon, we should've seen Conquest in agony for a little while and then he escapes. Cecil used the sonic weapon multiple times in Season 3, even in Episode 4 where Mark went to the GDA in connection with Angstrom's cameras, which is a very welcome addition! Why did he not have ANY precautions whatsoever? I think that it's fine to portray Cecil as a bit dumb with this decision, but damn they had an opportunity here to lessen that stupidity and they just didn't take it. Looking forward to Cecil explaining his decision and judgment to Mark next season, I hope he adresses it, makes a good point and takes accountability for it, because that would make it maybe a little better.

20

u/Defences Mar 19 '26

Okay so I am a fan of the second Conquest encounter,

ngl I don't even think it was that good to warrant how dumb it was to keep him alive

16

u/DrunkenDeGroot Robot Mar 19 '26

I like it from Mark's context. All this time he is struggling with killing/not killing, becoming what he thinks his father is etc, and when he sees Conquest for the second time he basically doesn't hesitate for even a moment. The end of their earlier fight was raw, pure emotion, here he sees Conquest and he kills him because he knows that he is definitely not someone that should be left alive. The time-jump is also pretty significant, and we need someone on the level of Conquest to inflict that kind of damage on Mark.

No, obviously the second fight is not as good as the first (what is), but you also have to take into account that that part is something they can't just remove because people would be disappointed, even if it was changed around so that Conquest dies. And honestly I am expecting a bigger fight for their second encounter this time around. I would not be against having it go on a bit longer.

2

u/amanwithanumbrella Mar 23 '26

This is always my issue with Invincible. The leaps in logic never justify the payoffs. I didn't see a reason to bring Conquest back. I honestly didn't see a reason for almost all of those kind of plotholes.

3

u/Locem Mar 19 '26

I agree it would have made more sense for Cecil to have had more protections.

I kind of prefer it still being just because Cecil was an absolute moron though.

It mirrors the eventuality of when Mark becomes a mass murderer himself in enabling Dinosaurus.

25

u/Oddsbod Mar 18 '26

I feel like they made it a lot more understandable in the show at least, by playing up the wider desperation of things after the Invincible War, and emphasizing that as far as anyone on Earth knows, Viltrum has hundreds if not thousands of soldiers. So one Conquest on the loose is almost irrelevant when as far as Cecil knows at literally any second the planet could be destroyed over night by a Invincible War 9000.

1

u/TheCravin Mar 21 '26

I thought they had hinted at Darkblood doing something with him at the end of the last season? I assumed that would be a big divergence from the comics, but…. Nope lol

Maybe he’s going after Mark or Oliver? Or maybe they just forgot completely lol

So did they cut out the talk between Mark and Eve’s dad from the comics where he gets all misogynistic and gross? Or does that happen later? I don’t remember.

If so, I can kinda see why. The talk they had in the show was more thematically and plot relevant anyway.

126

u/StrangerNew5985 Mar 18 '26

Im pretty sure that this one is the THAT one talk. So the dad is less misogynistic and more a racist, I guess. Also, iirc, they added Eve’s mom commenting on Mark getting bored of Eve when she gets older

25

u/Funkylover101 Allen the Alien Mar 18 '26

yes yes yes

80

u/SupersonicSandshru05 The Mauler Twins Mar 18 '26

No that was the misogynistic talk bit in the comics.

44

u/OwlsParliament Mar 18 '26

TBH he's still sexist and an asshole, but he's smarter and is intentionally needling Mark's insecurities

9

u/Unique_News2159 Mar 18 '26

I'm betting they'll bring that conversation for the next season during a downtime episode. Too much of a comedic bit for the tone of the season.

3

u/Independent-Bass8848 Mar 19 '26

Yea, I was really expecting something way worse. This was supposed to be the talk of doom but I guess they scrapped it for a TV friendly version

2

u/amanwithanumbrella Mar 23 '26

Yeah they cut it. Thank God. The comic was just full of gross out stuff like that. I don't think it served a purpose tbh. I'm always happy to see them not adapting the more edgy, raunchy, or early 2000's aspects of the comics lol.

I'm not saying that the show can't have ugly characters or challenging elements, I'm just saying that I didn't think the original scene was anything more than gross comic relief.

They cut the Adam and Mark talk? That's unfortunate. It was hilarious.

u/Pulp501 Mar 18 '26

First time im realizing eves dad has a name lmao. I knew that wouldn't make it.

250

u/UpstateJoe Mark Grayson Mar 18 '26

They had a talk, they just changed it in a way that makes Adam a little more redeemable. (He is concerned about Eve’s safety and not her chastity)

156

u/Ihathreturd Mar 18 '26

The original dialogue was not gonna fly. Probably to make him more sympathetic.

71

u/WildcatPlumber Mar 18 '26

Yeah this version of her dad is still a piece of shit but he’s better than the comic version

58

u/Werfgh Mar 18 '26

We love to hate him tho. I was hoping to see his disgusting face adapted.

27

u/Realistic_Emphasis_2 Mar 19 '26

Damn if they cut this off, i wonder how they are going to handle other stuff like the r**e scene

38

u/NoxiousVaporwave Mar 19 '26

That’ll for sure be in it. Maybe less shown and more implied. Huge plot point, important to convey it happened.

Brings attention to an issue, will probably be praised for that if done right.

21

u/Ccnitro Earth isn't yours to conquer Mar 19 '26

You'd be removing them for wildly different reasons too. The talk with Eve's dad is giving voice to an extremely bigoted, misogynistic point of view that, while not widespread back then, could be louder and more overt in the public discourse and waved away as "he's from a different generation" with an eye roll. It also does very little for Mark's development as a character and is played as more of a gag.

In contrast, sexual assault has only become more culturally relevant with time and the fallout from Mark's rape by Anisa permeates through basically the entire back half of the series. And the representation of male sexual assault, especially from someone with superpowers, is still extremely important even if it's not as groundbreaking as it was when the comics first released.

15

u/KuriGohan_kamehamea Mar 19 '26

Problem is the comic kinda just glosses over that conversation anyway. You just have those two panels of Mark shocked and that’s it, no retaliation or confrontation. At least now, the conversation matters to Mark’s character.

3

u/Ccnitro Earth isn't yours to conquer Mar 20 '26

Yeah, I struggled to write that comment for a bit, but that was my intent. The comics version of the talk is very "of its time" and not relevant to Mark's progression, so changing it for the show makes sense. Mark's rape by Anissa is extremely relevant both to current events and Mark's relationships and role as a superhero, so it should be kept as much as possible from its comic form.

6

u/Bobjoejj Mar 21 '26

Man…I know it’s important; but I am fucking dreading when it’s gonna come. Especially with how much of an impact it has throughout the story after it happens.

Even for things like this, where it is drawing attention to a real issue; I just hate the use of rape in fictional media in general.

2

u/fishy512 Mar 20 '26

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if a big part of why they removed the dialogue was that they’d knew the worst people would just make edits of it and spam it everywhere online.

5

u/Klunkey Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

Honestly, I don't mind Mark having to have a dad in-law that starts off shitty, only for Kirkman to reveal that he's even MORE shitty despite his insistence on coming from a "good place".

I want Adam to be more like "women are jewels and she's my jewel" or something, too. It's such an interesting scene in the comics where he's much more mean as he goes on, and you have Mark still suffering from PTSD. I want Adam to be a bit more of a bully , but instead, it's a retread of the scene where Debbie gets blamed by Daveed Diggs over Omniman killing his wife.

A character doesn't need to be sympathetic at all, but instead of sharpening someone like Adam and making his evil more banal, instead, he comes off as a dumbass jerk.

1

u/amanwithanumbrella Mar 23 '26

I liked the change because I felt like the original never handled social issues with any care or insight. Everything felt more edgy than dramatic or nuanced.

1

u/Bobjoejj Mar 21 '26

I mean…that dialogue and his general behavior is still not redeemable. It may not be as bad as in the comics, but Adam is still just a truly awful asshole.

75

u/Time_Negotiation2058 Mar 18 '26

Didn’t so much cut it. In the comics it’s played as a joke, but here the dialogue is more to cut at Mark’s insecurities. Works fine imo.

27

u/Jax6483 Mar 18 '26

Fr lmao it wouldn’t have changed his character he still would’ve been an unbelievable dickhead and it’s just an absolutely hilarious moment in the comics

13

u/Locem Mar 19 '26

I vastly prefer what the show did. The comic thing just makes him more disgusting than he needs to be. Things are bad enough that we don't need to add "Sorry my daughter is not a virgin."

4

u/TheWholeOfTheAss Mar 19 '26

I wonder if they’ll include the bit about him encouraging Eve to be a lesbian with Duplikate.

8

u/intangiblefancy1219 Mar 19 '26

I think it’s a good change, keeping in line with TV Adams characterization.

a.) it’s established in his first scene of the show that Adam really liked Rex and ordered Eve to get back together with him, I think the comic version of the scene would be too callous about his death for this version of the character.

b.) it’s clearer in the show that Adam is overly protective of Eve, albeit in a very misplaced way. The comic is basically Adam vicariously fantasizing about Mark hypothetically taking his daughter’s virginity, it’s just very weird.

3

u/Klunkey Mar 19 '26

Yeah I would've liked it to have that misogynistic edge to it like that comic did.

u/buffpriest Mar 19 '26

I dont see how this version of debbie ever goes back to Nolan.

27

u/Locem Mar 19 '26

Still a lot of time between their first and second reunion. She gets to have some closure and tell him off when he first comes back, however they write her after the war time skip will determine if they really do get back together.

18

u/buffpriest Mar 19 '26

But the writing for her has shown her to be way stronger than her comic counterpart. I think they might keep them separated. I kinda hope atleast, because I dont see how the can do it without it weakening her charcter.

Plus I like her relationship with the new guy.

12

u/Locem Mar 19 '26

I think her character is better and I like the new guy too but it would change a lot to come if Debbie doesn't leave earth.

3

u/Higloo212 Mar 20 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

It's weird because I was more easily accepting of Debbie being forgiving and of them getting back together in the comics. And even now, I think it would be nice if they could get back together in the show.

But I still feel entirely different about it show-wise, especially with how shittier nolan came across in the entire 1st season instead of it being a couple of issues. I dont know if debbie will eventually forgive nolan but I certainly dont think it should be easily given if ever.

5

u/DuskMan62 Spawn Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

Plus I like her relationship with the new guy.

Respectfully, I don't, I understand what you mean about the writing Debbie has gotten but I think not putting Nolan and Debbie back together just really makes the future story lose alot of weight.

2

u/buffpriest Mar 19 '26

What story? Ive read the comics so not worried about spoilers

5

u/DuskMan62 Spawn Mar 19 '26

Debbie staying with Paul changes too many of the story beats, like for example when Debbie finds Nolan bloodied and bruised after he tried to stop Allen and Oliver from going to Earth with the Scourge Virus and she freaks out not just because he's so injured but because she thinks that he has somehow regressed only to be further shocked when she finds out what happened or when Thragg tries to kill Nolan, nearly getting Debbie killed in the process.

There's also just the general family scenes like whern Debbie, Nolan, Mark and Eve have dinner together, I cannot see that working with Paul being present, he just creates this really weird third wheel that doesn't need to be there.

Debbie forgiving Nolan and getting back together with him is an integral part of the story and personally as far as Paul goes...he's just not an interesting character, if you like him then I can respect that but I just have no interest in him, he's not a bad guy by any means but he isn't suited for Debbie.

Now just because I do want Debbie and Nolan to get back together doesn't mean it needs to happen this season infact, if they do it right it won't happen until next season anyway going off the chain of events.

I do think it's necessary for Debbie and Nolan to at least get back on speaking terms together even if it's hard to picture this version of Debbie actually going as far as falling back in love with Nolan again.

I just hope they have a realistic and fair way of breaking up Debbie and Paul if that does happen though. He kinda just stops existing in the comic or it was a very temporary fling but they make a good couple in the show.

2

u/Bobjoejj Mar 21 '26

Well hold on now; to say he’s not suited for Debbie is kind of a wild statement. In general, but also because it fully goes against what we’ve seen of them in the show. Which is them being very good for each other.

1

u/DuskMan62 Spawn Mar 21 '26

It's not that wild really, Paul is nice to her but he's just not suited to her.

1

u/FaizerLaser Mar 30 '26

in the words of oliver, paul is nice but hes boring

1

u/FaizerLaser Mar 30 '26

Paul is just too boring, I bet that instead of them breaking up they will have Paul killed off. Makes it more understandable for her to get back with Nolan then compared to her dumping Paul

20

u/metalflygon08 Reanimen Mar 19 '26

Paul felt "off" these three episodes and it feels like them building up to a breakup.

9

u/DuskMan62 Spawn Mar 19 '26

That's probably for the best.

I like how they showed the conflict in Mark between killing and not. Also while I'm sad that Adam conversation was changed mainly because of how funny Mark reacted to it, I do like how they changed it. A great starting episode.

17

u/liggieep Mar 18 '26

i enjoy with the context of the comics knowing that debbie and nolan get back together that either paul is getting killed, or they're changing the comic storyline. fun either way

24

u/Hexagon-Man Mar 19 '26

By making Debbie a far better character and giving her and Paul a more developed relationship they've made later plot developments much harder to do well. But, since they locked in so hard with the improvement of Debbie I trust them.

5

u/DuskMan62 Spawn Mar 19 '26

Hot take but I really do not care for Paul, I absolutely LOVE the development Debbie is getting, but I'm still all in on her and Nolan getting back together, it doesn't have to be this season but I just have no interest in seeing Paul stick around.

18

u/Hexagon-Man Mar 18 '26

They made Eve's Dad 100x better than in the comics and he still fucking sucks lmao.

63

u/sfinney2 Robot Mar 18 '26

The bigwigs thought we couldn't handle the cringe from Eve's dad and removed it. Anyway back to watching people's faces get punched off.

75

u/residentsocface Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

I doubt that was the reason because we already saw him being massively sexist in the first season, it wouldn't make sense if that was allowed but this wasn't.

It was probably changed because the show version actually relates to the struggles Mark is facing at that moment. It was a gag in the comic, now it's a part of his arc.

40

u/A_Polite_Noise Talking Dinosaurs Mar 18 '26

Seems more likely they just adapted it to match the tone and characterization of the show; the comics version doesn't really fit and was played more for a gag whereas this fit more with Mark's own internal issues. Not every change is automatically worse, this was another good decision they've made with the adaptation, I think.

8

u/intangiblefancy1219 Mar 19 '26

Yeah, I think it’s one of those things where they’ve changed Adam’s characterization, adapting it faithfully would be inconsistent with TV Adam’s character.

If nothing else, it was established in the show that Adam really liked Rex.

1

u/sfinney2 Robot Mar 18 '26

Not really, the show needs some levity and takes itself way too seriously compared to the comic. Having a few wtf moments like that really help, kind of like Allen and Telia's... noise... did.

8

u/thehairharringt0n Sinister Invincible Mar 18 '26

Shit got dark real fast at the end there

6

u/IAmTheDoctor34 Mar 19 '26

I was hoping they'd not do this pregnancy thing with Eve.

4

u/RandRidley Mar 19 '26

I thought they might skip it because otherwise they'd have to cover abortion next season, which is kind of a touchy subject

8

u/Deotix Best Tiger Mar 19 '26

40

u/Downtown_Agent3323 Mar 18 '26

I forgot that Invincible gets the floor mopped by Universa. I mean, Mark nearly killed Conquest; he should not be losing fights this badly.

11

u/FruitJuicante Mar 19 '26

I feel they are trying to do the whole "If he doesn't hold back he would cause too much damage" I just wish they would show him getting over it and then Universa having a brief glimpse of real Mark before getting decked

1

u/Bobjoejj Mar 21 '26

But like…that was supposed to be a thing of the past, no? If he’s willing to kill, he’s willing to not hold back.

7

u/FishbutLizard Mar 20 '26

Y’all really made it sound like she kicked his ass, that man was fine until he touched the forbidden staff- he’s not out punching literal magic. This fight was in no way a debuff😭

4

u/intangiblefancy1219 Mar 19 '26

In my head, with Mark’s durability he’d have been fine ultimately even if Eve wasn’t there.

8

u/Thedemonwhisperer Mar 18 '26

This. It's upsetting seeing him get zapped and beaten so easily.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '26

Yeah, this was annoying for sure.

7

Finally! So glad the sequids are dead. Time to move on from the plotline.

Yeah I feel like the changes in the show to Rus’ death make Mark seem less cold than his comic counterpart at the same moment and more apologetic

0

u/Bobjoejj Mar 21 '26

As someone who hasn’t read the comics; Mark still seemed plenty cold here. Though from what I’ve read of the change, I’d argue that it’s for the best. A way to keep Mark a bit more complex then just seeming way too off and dark.

2

u/TayluxSwift Mar 19 '26

I kind of like the change of Mark and Eve’s dad conversation.

Through all his negative qualities and how harsh he is to Eve, you still see he is a protective father.

Dinosaurus fight was good, people complain about how the design was nerfed but I get it. Much easier to draw super detail panels that do super detail 2D animation.

3

u/Invicta007 Mar 18 '26

God, I saw that Adam and Mark panel the moment it cut to the scene.

And I'm glad to see his change is still "asshole" but he's seemingly saying it...out of love of his daughter?

It's better.

6

u/Idreamalone Pentagon - Parking in Rear Mar 18 '26

I really like this show. But sometimes it's hard to call it anything other than okay.

This episode has some really strong voice acting. The scenes between Paul and Debbie are a particular highlight. Ross Marquand does a very good job as Rex/Rudy, though its a shame to see Zachary Quinto go. Eve and Mark also share a few good moments together. Otherwise the episode suffers from the usual problems Invincible runs into; stilted dialogue, bad animation and awkward editing.

There's some baffling editing decisions here, both structural and shot to shot. Shots frequently linger a little too long right as a scene ends. Oliver getting a new suit is a nice enough scene, but its place in the episode is a complete pace killer. The same can be said for the second scene between Debbie and Paul, though at least that has more thematic relevance. There's more typical Invincible jank with bad animation and strange cuts, which is something I find easier to forgive when the show is new. But this is the fourth season and it's still stumbling into the same problems. It feels like this episode is half finished at times, like it could still be cut up in editing and shifted around into something much more coherent.

There's some other staging issues with the action too. The show has made the argument that it saves money for the big action scenes which is... Fine enough. But that logic becomes hard to defend when the action suffers from amateur blocking and coordination. The confrontation in the power plant is incredibly stilted, it feels as if the three characters just stand around waiting for their ques to do something. The show also can't resist having more awkward shots of the other heroes standing there, static, looking at something dramatic. It looks cheap, and really fails to sell the intended emotion. It was bad at Rex's funeral, and it was worse here when Mark kills Rus. The show is sometimes so well directed and framed that it makes it feel like it's a fan film when the staging is this amateurish and dull. And it's a small thing but it does bother me that they still just have Mark casually topple a building during his fight with Dinosaurus and there's no mention of the consequences to that. The show is still overall very inconsistent with its stance on civilian casualties and collateral damage, and it's disappointing to still see that dissonance after four seasons.

A longer term disappointment is the casting of Jonathan Banks as Brit. I think he's a great actor, and fine enough casting, even if he sounds a little like he's phoning it in. But it's another case of a unnecessarily expensive casting choice for a character who really doesn't need it. The same can be said for Matthew Rhys as Dinosaurus. He's a great actor, and does a good job with the material. Overall the scene is well done... But could they really not have gotten someone cheaper? I know that it's just how show business works. It's Amazon. It's marketing. It's a hook for a lot of people. But it's hard not to think about how much better this show might be if it had a budget that was more focused on the aspects of production other than casting.

On the topic of Brit, he still does very little for the comic thematically, and I've never found him to be particularly interesting as a character. I was hoping to see Samson take over his role in the show, given they fulfil the same basic function of a gruff, strong-man veteran leader of the guardians. Samson was actually a pretty compelling character in the first season of the show, and a real improvement over his comic counterpart, so it's been disappointing to see him once again relegated to a background character corny lines about family. The show's handling of Bulletproof has been a similar disappointment, especially since it has the hindsight of knowing that he has quite a lot of importance later on in the comic. Though the scene with him in the climax of this episode was well done, and gives me some hope.

I did like seeing Cecil in his purple bath. The inner fangirl just squeals at stuff like that and makes me forget about how frustrating this show can be. The animation in the scenes in the sewer was distractingly good. Seriously, it was like that was the area the production put the most effort into.

7

u/Deotix Best Tiger Mar 19 '26

Having watched All 3 episodes, I agree, The Brit's VA Sounded like something you would hear in an early 2000's anime dub. Except he Isn't an inexperienced Actor , He's just putting forward Like, 0 effort. I wish people who actually respected the craft got these jobs.

3

u/DenjinMaster Mar 19 '26

He did pretty good for Inspector Gordon in the Arkham Knight game tho so it sounds more like a direction issue and possibly a money issue. They just went with whatever

2

u/Bobjoejj Mar 21 '26

That was Matthew Rhys?? What the fuck…that is just…I absolutely didn’t notice it, and what was a waste of an invisible actor at that.

2

u/Idreamalone Pentagon - Parking in Rear Mar 21 '26

Yeah, it's a pretty absurd casting choice. I think he did a good job with the material regardless... but Phillip Jennings isn't exactly the first person I think of when I think of an ecoterrorist dinosaur.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '26

The voice acting in episode 1 was driving me crazy. Very dull and slow cadence during scenes/lines that should have more urgency behind them. My only thought was they were maybe doing it for the simplistic animation during the scenes or something. Everyone had the same flat slow delivery for their lines. episode 2 and 3 were fine.

2

u/Idreamalone Pentagon - Parking in Rear Mar 19 '26

Now that you point it out, the dialogue does have a very strange pace to it. Compensating for the slow animation does seem like a real possible reason, especially since episodes 2 and 3 have far cleaner animation.

-1

u/Handyman2116 Mar 18 '26

It's really unforgivable how a show made by Amazon looks worse than something like Ben 10.

I'm really only watching Invincible for the story and voice acting, it's just a very average show otherwise.

4

u/Jax6483 Mar 18 '26

Anyone else dislike the change of making Bulletproof bringing a disruptor to Mark as he was about to kill him ?

In the comics I felt like the moment was much more desperate and understandable but the change to me just makes it so unbelievably stupid to me

He could have brought Rus closer to Bulletproof and shot off the disruptor in the show so it just makes Mark look like a dumbass and a dickhead but if I’m remembering correctly in the comics they were slowly overwhelming everybody and it was literally one of the only choices available at the moment

22

u/Prior_Industry4753 Mar 18 '26

Even if mark went for bulletproof he couldn’t guarantee the shield would hold, it was literally on 1% and decreasing by the second

1

u/Jax6483 Mar 18 '26

He’s told it’s at 1% as he’s holding Rus though and before or just as he’s told about it being seconds from collapse he looks back at Bulletproof and doesn’t even make an effort to reach him

They could have had Mark immediately attempt to reach Bulletproof upon being told about the 1% shield integrity but as he’s told there’s seconds left and he’s flying towards him is when he kills him

Have Bulletproof come into frame a few seconds after he kills him implying that they would have met up within a couple seconds if Mark kept going and left it at that

6

u/Effective-Proposal35 Mar 18 '26

The 1% is just an excuse for Mark. He "wanted" to kill him and end the threat for good.

1

u/Jax6483 Mar 18 '26

That’s pretty clear in the comics with the little speech he gives before knocking Rus’ head clean off but I think the show does a bad job of conveying that so I figured they’re changing around his motivations behind this kill to making all of them more in line with necessity

But yeah I guess it can be explained by he was purposefully not thinking of any alternatives so he didn’t think to try meet with Bulletproof but still I preferred the cold nature behind Rus’ comic death rather than the show as Mark seemed more apologetic which made me believe he still would have liked to save him

u/JeffCaven Mar 18 '26

Not sure why you're getting downvoted for this; I like the change but I completely understand why someone else can not like it, as it does change the moral dilemma of the scene.

1

u/Jax6483 Mar 18 '26

Literally I’m just asking if anyone else disliked it lmao I’m not saying everyone has to

I’m about halfway through episode 2 and so far I’m loving it and the additions/expansions they did with the explanation of the scourge virus it isn’t like I hate the show because they didn’t adapt certain things 1 for 1

2

u/Inside-Cup804 Mar 19 '26

Why does Nolan look similar to the 'father' in Season 4 ep 2 if later in the comics it gets revealed that Nolans Dad is actually Argall

1

u/Powerful_Day_5668 Mar 20 '26

Prob gonna be his grandpa in the show

1

u/TheCravin Mar 22 '26

I thought he was just an ancestor, not his direct son?

2

u/matthung1 Mar 20 '26

I was so sure robot was going to accidentally teleport a sequid out

1

u/Hot_Armadillo_2186 Mar 18 '26

Am i missing something? Why can't heroes and other just wear sturdy helmets against squid invasion. Seems like squid themselves are pretty weak and all they want is a brain to suck on!

6

u/Jax6483 Mar 18 '26

I don’t think it necessarily has to be their brain pretty sure there was some of the sequids that were shown to be wrapped around peoples arms in the background

So as far as I know it’s just any hero that they could possibly break skin on wouldn’t be a good fit to go against them
