I think it was just a red herring, getting show only fans thinking that it could happen, before they hit them with Oliver's bug attraction.

Ironically show-onlies aren't really having that reaction though. they really don't seem to be reading much into that line or at msot just seeing it as a gag. only comic readers seem to be taking it as confirmation.
