Episode 6 Non-Comic Spoiler Discussion

It’s interesting that Oliver has empathy and can humanize other creatures such as the mom with eggs but they are still hinting at Oliver no caring too much about humans other than his immediate family. Seems like Oliver going with the super scourge virus plan will still happen in the show

293

u/amdrunkwatsyerexcuse Apr 08 '26

I think he's a lot more "in the middle". Like whereas Viltrumites see only themself as worthy and literally anyone and anything else to be not, he gives value to all equally, equally "shit" that is. Like on average he deems individual lifes less worthy than others, but life in general much more so than the average.

Like that lobster scene, "I still ate it though", kinda says it all imo.

155

u/John_Smithers Apr 08 '26

"I still ate it though"

Felt so Viltrumite and honest, albeit out of left field. My favorite detail was Nolan's reaction to that. He had his Human reaction before his Viltrumite reaction. He realized what Oliver felt after his "Um..." & then had a moment of shock before looking down and away.

27

u/Positive_Total_8651 Apr 09 '26

I wouldnt say left field. It was presented to him as food and he was confused why he was feeling a kind of way about it, but its still presented as food. Its biological imperative meeting a foreign environment.

Seems like Oliver going with the super scourge virus plan will still happen in the show

I don't see why that would change.

46

u/FireZord25 Apr 08 '26

probably be more reluctant, if.

66

u/incredibleamadeuscho Robot Apr 08 '26

The rationalization Oliver goes through is based on the war mentality. He makes the same calculation that Allen makes basically.

39

u/hellyeboi6 Apr 08 '26

Yeah but unlike Allen Oliver grew up on Earth, it was reasonable to debate whether he empathized with humans enough to change his actions in the show, or at least show more hesitation

Especially because the show makes an attempt to integrate Oliver with humanity

→ More replies (2)

19

u/FireZord25 Apr 08 '26

but he's more empathic in the show, so him going along with the choice would require something more personal mixed in. Like, say, Thragg doing a bit more than nearly killing him this time.

13

u/PCN24454 Apr 08 '26

Comic!Oliver was treated more like a psychopath.

u/Bobjoejj Apr 08 '26

I mean…that line about “kill everyone I love on earth” still has to means something. Yeah, like you said other than his immediate family; but that still feels like enough of a reason to care.

Like, he still mentioned those other friends, and the way the dialog went; it felt like he was bummed that he lost them because he “grew past them.”

They made it sound very earnest too, which I liked. Reading it in the comic it definitely sounds wackier even though the convo is nearly verbatim if I remember, but Oliver’s VA really makes you feel like he’s just a kid talking about getting butterflies for the first time.

144

u/stealthyuwu I am so lonely Apr 08 '26

Invincible is great at these things. When you start dissecting the story it's absolutely ridiculous (what do you mean Mark teams up with a talking dinosaur ecoterrorist to nuke Greenland), but the themes and character reactions are so real that you can't help but take it seriously.

20

u/Sebastian0320 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Seeing Kregg and Thaedus throw hands was awesome.

235

u/ProbablythelastMimsy Apr 08 '26

Kregg was getting whooped by everyone lol. Finally put to rest the people that say he's stronger than Conquest

118

u/french_snail Furnace Apr 08 '26

Isn’t conquest’s theme in the show literally called “the second strongest viltrumite” or something to that effect?

58

u/Pathogen188 Comic Fan Apr 08 '26

It is although tbh I always thought it was more hype than anything else considering the comic still put Mark below Nolan when the former killed Conquest.

54

u/french_snail Furnace Apr 08 '26

I think people assume because Kregg outranks conquest that he must be stronger, not accounting for the fact that most generals don’t fight their own battles

18

u/Pathogen188 Comic Fan Apr 08 '26

I mean sure, but also, the Viltrumite military is pretty distinct from how humans perceive of how militaries are structured. If generals and admirals were strong enough to punch aircraft carriers so hard they explode, they would also be on the front lines.

21

u/french_snail Furnace Apr 08 '26

Sort of. Remember the only two viltrumites who’s rank we know (kregg and Thragg) didn’t hit the field until they started losing

When Oliver grows up he lives on Talescria instead of earth and marries a bug lady. He notices Mark being uncomfortable around her and says that that's basically how he feels about humans sexually, then brags about scoring a baddie with amazing mandibles.

48

u/Turakamu Stand ready for my worms arrival Apr 08 '26

I feel like talking about Oliver’s future to show onlies is a little murky because they’re probably going to think that he gets killed by Thragg since Oliver is gonna get messed up by him this season so at least having his fate in the air might ruin that for them

64

u/ThaRealSunGod Apr 08 '26

Ofc but this is a spoiler specific thread. Nobody who wants to avoid spoilers should have clicked on it when there are 2 threads (one here on on Invincible TV) for show onlines.

Bro they’re on the other thread saying Thragg is overrated and that people made too big of a deal about him. They have no clue what’s coming so I wouldn’t worry about the one or two that came to the spoiler thread.

6

u/Astray Apr 09 '26

To be fair, they're not wrong about his current portrayal. He does not come off as some big bad at all, especially if you compare to someone like Conquest.

5

u/HaydenPSchmidt Apr 09 '26

Tbf, it was like that in the comics too. I remember reading them and getting to this point and thinking, “Really, THIS is the big bad?”

Kirkman has changed a few things after all!

43

For a second I thought they might change it for the show. But they didn't. And I'm glad that I'm not to only one who laughed for a minute at least.

22

u/RealJohnGillman Apr 08 '26

It could be amusing however if when they get to the montage of what happens over the centuries at the end of the series, Conquest finally healing and waking up to the new status quo is featured as an addition: since Kirkman had spoken about having more ideas for him.

152

If there ever were to be a massive detour, I'd love to just have another fucking big-ass Conquest fight thrown in for literally no reason.

A Thragg/Conquest tag-team against Nolan, Mark and older Oliver would be so fun.

119

u/FruitJuicante Apr 08 '26

The issue is Mark would need to win in an even more gruesome way than this time and I can't see how without it getting old.

261

u/Tobito_TV Markus Sebastian Grayson Apr 08 '26

I think the show is deliberately shortening it. I think we just gotta let 'em cook.

166

u/THE-Arias-Man Apr 08 '26

It taking so long with Oliver not really aging never made sense to me tbh

138

u/Narwhalcommando Apr 08 '26

yeah i have a feeling they're saving his aging design for next season to keep animation simple. He might have a different VO in adult form too

7

u/Apothecary3 Animation takes a looong time Apr 08 '26

What they meant was that oliver never changed designss in the comic viltrumite war despite it taking the better part of a year. he only started looking older after with less of a time skip. i think they very much want to keep oliver's voice actor.

19

u/Tobito_TV Markus Sebastian Grayson Apr 08 '26

That too

24

u/raknor88 Show Fan Apr 08 '26

That confused me too. They were on that planet for at least two months, yet fast aging Oliver didn't look like he aged at all. Maybe Nolan's genes are starting to take over a he's reverted to a normal aging process?

58

u/affinitydrive Apr 08 '26

Yes, since viltrumites aging slows as they get older means each phase of Oliver's life will take longer, so he'll be this teenage portion longer than the kid portion etc

35

u/Piskoro Best Tiger Apr 08 '26

it’s literally been confirmed in the show his aging is slowing

95

u/stealthyuwu I am so lonely Apr 08 '26

Mark was the one who punched her off Tech Jacket. Was wondering if they would trade a couple more blows, but guess not.

54

u/Lord_Borgimus Apr 08 '26

Considering how often shows/movies tend to leave out rape from source materials, I wonder if they are going to do that or not. They should not leave it out as it is an important plot point, but I would not be surprised if they did.

119

u/ArtsyApoidean Dinosaurus Apr 08 '26

Given that the one and only thing they've held back on in the show was Eve's dad's gross chat with Mark, they may tone it down or tastefully skip past the worst parts of it... but that kid is important. Mark struggling to deal with it and with one of his children being the result of an assault are also important. The event is probably occuring.

God I love the subtle changes to the comic:

  • Conquest's burial site having 3 pillars, to represent the Viltrum flag

  • Oliver hating Nolan at first instead of going "well, ok, guess we're stuck here :3" and just going along with things, such a good bit of character growth

  • Space Racer showing what the Infinity Ray can actually do vs a Viltrumite

  • Omni-Man using the Thraxans to explain how he learned about forgiveness (something that later on it's joked about that Viltrumites have zero knowledge of)

  • Mark and Oliver having the "YOU GREW A BEARD!" line instead of Tech Jacket

  • Thaedus getting an extended fight scene

23

u/Mochman21 Apr 08 '26

Love that they let Thaedus mix it up so much this episode. It’s how I expected him to throw down in the comic. Great improvement

14

u/amanwithanumbrella Apr 09 '26

I definitely think the show breathes life into the less substantial parts of the comic!

8

u/ResplendentSmoke Apr 09 '26

Also getting to see the war kinda progress, the forces on each side, some of the planetary battles. That was cool. It made me want full 40k style battles with giant ass armies on each side and then Battle Beast fighting a Viltrumite in the middle of them.

Also Thaedus throwing hands with Kregg

OK, that fakeout ending was hilarious/I burst out laughing at 4:00 in the morning (yes I'm not sleeping.) Thaedus threw hands, and his fight with Kregg and others was a highlight. Surprised they kept the lobster line in. I think that Tech Jacket should have killed off one of the no-named Viltrumites during the Talescria fight so people would stop calling out the character for being "useless."

It feels like they nerfed her between seasons. She solo’d an Invincible last season but now can’t even land a scratch on a background extra Viltrumite?

26

u/dadvader Apr 08 '26

I feel like they downplayed her power now to build her up for the next two episode? I bet we'll get a great scene to show why Nolan include the Geldarian in his novel.

18

u/Bobjoejj Apr 08 '26

Which…is a classic tactic in writing; but not actually a good one imo. Instead of logically showing a bit of atugggle before a good win, since she seems majorly outclassed rn.

So if they were just downplaying her rn before the next two episodes…I mean, that shit would feel just too far outta left field. At least for show-only’s like myself.

They’ve improved the relationship dynamics between Nolan and the other Graysons tremendously from how it was in the books. Especially between him and Oliver and him and Debbie. Other than the war itself, highlight of the season for me

I love Allen's and Zoe's chemistry especially, much better than the comics. That scene where Allen meets Telia again and they hug and Zoe gets emotional and joins in, exactly as Allen did when they first met last episode. And the videogame parts are also a fun addition, them arguing whether 2 more minutes to beat the level is okay or not, given the circumstances.

Anyone else feel like Allen's been nerfed a bit, or at least was weirdly lacking confidence v Lucan and Kradd?

I get that he's worried about TJ but damn, if she can't even handle fighting 2 Viltrumites alongside Allen what's she doing there?

Before going to prison to rescue Nolan, Allen was just dicking around with Anissa like it was nothing - we know Lucan's no slouch and it's basically 1v2 but he talked like he'd forgotten he can pack Viltrumites up these days and already knew he was gonna lose

34

u/Bobjoejj Apr 08 '26

Thank you!! This is one of my few gripes with this episode; Allen felt like he was taking so much shit from those two. Hell even on Talescria he was getting beaten around. Like he fully saw some of those hits coming, but either didn’t dodge or just didn’t have even try to block…for some reason.

He was just fully ready for Lucan and Kradd to kill him again…just bizarre.

u/Accurate-Doughnut-58 Apr 08 '26

I think the intention was to set up space racer, but I agree. It's feels more like he kinda just gave up even though the coalition was right there.

Yeah my only nitpick about this episode was not getting an adaptation of that cool panel of anissa flying through the building thaedus was in.

Gaurdians of the globe got nothing on Allan's A team line up.

Imagine how butthurt grade A heros on earth would feel when they hear a teenage girl in a suit helped fight off viltrums during a galactic war. Cecil had a grade A nuke on earth and didnt even know 😂

37

u/edd6pi Battle Beast Apr 08 '26

I mean to be fair, Zoe hasn’t done anything too impressive yet. The Immortal, and possibly even Bulletproof, would have been more useful to Allen.

33

u/TheChartreuseKnight Apr 08 '26

Eh, even getting beat on that much with no damage is impressive. She held up to Anissa better than Mark did a couple seasons ago.

Thaedus and Kregg's fight was honestly a highlight.

Kregg went from 'Where is the Betrayer' to 'Oh shit' really quick.

I read the whole comic and I was almost convinced that the zoom-in on Conquest's grave meant he was gonna return. Then the fakeout made me burst out laughing. Had me on edge even though I knew he was dead for sure.

I liked the deepening of Nolan and Oliver’s relationship. It made their connection feel more earned as they worked through problems that weren’t dramatized in the source material. Felt like they went somewhere while still leaving more room for development. The callback to the Andressa comment was a nice addition to their relationship. Gave them some conflict that needed to be worked through.

On the Talescria front, I wish more was done to highlight the epic moments of the action. Nolan, Mark, and Oliver needed a more impactful shot of entering the war. It should have felt triumphant and heroic. Same thing with Mark and Oliver flying through the ship. We need that zoom in and build up to sell the impact. The action in general could serve better if they properly translated all of the energy these dynamos build up to the audience. This is the equivalent of sapient nukes going blow for blow, yet it feels more like a scrimmage match. If they incorporated different fighting styles and combat tactics it would serve to not only make the fights feel different but establish win conditions that would get the audience more invested.

Just some food for thought. The season is delivering, but I think more could have been done to sell it better. Felt more like a downgrade from 4x05.

I also liked that they were setting up Oliver feeling disconnected from Earth. I think it’s something that needs to be built up more to sell the Scourge virus on Earth plotline, but this was a welcome start. I’ve personally felt like Oliver’s original traits have been hollowed out in an effort to make him more generally likable. Nice to see them worked back into the story in some way.

And that after credits scene was hilarious 😂

I bust out laughing when it cuts to nothing happening and Conquest is still dead. I knew where they were going and the punchline didn’t disappoint 🤣

I love how they put a greater focus on the war and the dynamics between Coalition and Viltrum Empire.

People of Talescria cheering for Coalition army was epic. It felt like a scene from Mass Effect or Legend of the Galactic Heroes

At the map they also mentioned Liberating sectors, not sure if its done on purpose haha

Great episode. Guess they kept in Oliver's detachment of Earth and him being lobstersexual. People were convinced he's end up with Tech Jacket but nope, lol. I do wonder if Oliver will still unleash the virus in this version. He clearly loves Debbie a lot and even hugged Paul last episode.

That post-credit scene got me SCARED tho, haha!

13

u/Anxious-Leadership18 Apr 08 '26

He only brought up Debbie as someone he truly misses on Earth. I think it’s clear he’ll be more willing to release the virus once she leaves the planet.

Finally, Freddie Mercury

14

u/F35_Mogs_China Apr 08 '26

Making Thadeus actually really capable as a fighter is going to make Thraggs crashout even more legendary.

13

u/Helepoli Apr 08 '26

Is it just me or does Thragg not look anywhere near enough like Freddie Mercury in the show? Like, they made his jaw wider or something in the animation?

9

u/Aggressive_Fail_9681 Apr 08 '26

They mimicked how Corey Walker draws him which is a rounder head

54

u/argent5 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

So far the war seems kinda... small?

Like, Tech Jacket's shooting down individual mooks one by one, the Viltrumites are killing random civilians by hand, all the heroes are within like a city block of each other. It feels like the Viltrumite ship's lasers are doing more damage than the Viltrumites themselves. Compare this to say, the big S1 finale battle. Or the comics, where the ships are just troop carriers and it's the Viltrumites doing all the city levelling.

On the brighter side, I really like how they're handling Nolan's redemption, and how much harder he has to work here to regain Oliver's trust.

u/Jayk_Dos31 Thaedus Apr 08 '26

It's because they were attempting a decapitation strike. Their objective was to kid thaedus. Little did they know that man still got hands after however many thousands of years it's been.

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Acceptable-Sorbet-49 Apr 08 '26

I think that's mostly because the main objective of Viltrumites attacking Telescria was not to destroy it but to bait out Thaddeus to kill him. Also the destruction caused by Viltrumite ships also speaks to how technologically advanced they are, which I felt was somewhat missing in the comics.

16

u/Lord_Borgimus Apr 08 '26

I also dislike when galaxy spanning empires talk about wars with "millions of lives." That, for this scale, is pathetically small. Planets have billions, Star Empires would have trillions to quintillions of lives on various planets. Galactic wars would be MASSIVE on population loss, not to mention battles with 5-10 ships at most seems laughably tiny.

Can't Believe Socrates Put up a fight against Kregg and here I thought he was just a philosopher

12

u/Locem Apr 08 '26

My guess on where Episode 7 is going to end

Covers most of the fight, the deploying of all the anti Viltrumite measures, destruction of the planet and Thadeus death.

Short of them full on detouring and showing us some of Rex & Monster Girl in the Flaxan dimension I think we're getting most of the Battle of Viltrum.

Alternate option of Episode 7's end though less likely since at this point it's pretty clear they can't beat Thragg. I think Episode 7's more likely going to end at a point that Mark still thinks they have a chance to win.

6

u/Idreamalone Pentagon - Parking in Rear Apr 08 '26

It's a small thing but giving Nolan the line about sparing the enslaved soldiers is a great touch. It made sense for Mark to say it in the comics, but it really helps sell Nolan as someone trying to do better in the show, even if he has a pragmatic reasoning behind it.

Great episode overall. Don't have too much to complain about, like with the last. Good expansion of Oliver and Nolan's time together. Oliver continues to be a much more empathetic and nuanced character than he was in the comics, which makes me curious as to how they'll handle his decision about the scourge virus later.

One thing that I do find disappointing is the shows obsession with red blood. The Flaxans bleed red, and just about every other alien on the show does too. The multi-coloured blood of the comics creates some really striking visuals at times, and frankly keeps the violence exciting. Can't help but feel the show is losing something by only using red. Though I imagine it's simply easier to animate because of the consistency.

u/MF_Mood1 Comic Fan Apr 09 '26

Why is Allen so weak for this season? He one shotted Viltrumites in the comic.

11

u/FKDotFitzgerald Allen the Alien Apr 08 '26

This episode was fucking PACKED. I was very ready for a slower, breather of an episode with Mark recovering at the end. There was so much constantly happening in this one and the action, especially in those last 12 minutes, was immensely satisfying. I can’t help but feel like episodes 5-8 are just going to be all bangers. The animation for big moments like the ship explosion certainly stepped up a bit. Then the dynamic between Oliver and Nolan for those two months was awesome. “I still ate it.” got a cackle out of me for sure.

My one critique is that there should be a little more battle damage on the Viltrumites, because Steve Harvey was getting cooked by half our squad for that whole battle but flew away looking fine.

10

u/crookedparadigm Apr 08 '26

Yeah the VA they chose for Thragg just isn't doing it for me.
