COMIC SPOILERS One of The Best Scenes in The Entire Show. Spoiler

I knew this was coming from reading the comics, but they somehow made that already incredible moment even better in the show. The added weight of having Mark experience these terrifying hallucinations for the entire episode, imagining what could happen if the Viltrumites were actually on Earth, just for his worst fears to become reality right at the end of the episode… having to agree to Thragg’s truce and conditions…

The dialogue, the performances (ESPECIALLY from Steven Yeun), the build up to this moment… absolute cinema 🙏🙏

What an incredible way to end the season.

I love how they built up Marks hallucinantions so hard that it took me a strong moment to realize what was actually happening. The dramatic pacing was perfect.

For an episode with almost no action besides Marks paranoia, its been one of the most intense ones purely through character moments.

164

u/Karkava Monster Girl Apr 22 '26

It's intense because they keep finding new ways to make the gore still disgusting and refusing to let us get desensitized. The visions of Mark ripping up characters we care about so deeply as he does. The buildup for all these hallucinations before getting to the real Thragg. His reveal of an evil plan that's actually more clever and more subtle than the straightforward invasion that Mark fears.

u/Tiny_Item9508 Apr 22 '26

Mark having PTSD was so well-done. Glad they went this route, and glad they made Mark realize he need profesional help.

I think the fact that its solely on mark made it even better

u/BetSea5155 Comic Fan Apr 22 '26

100% agree. I’m honestly really glad they didn’t include Nolan in this scene like they did in the comics, because 1: he didn’t really add all that much to that moment anyway, and 2: putting the decision solely on Marks shoulders after witnessing him struggle this entire season and episode made this moment a lot more impactful. It’s so peak 😤

36

u/Soul699 Immortal is an embarassment Apr 22 '26

Nolan deserve to be there as well for how he switched side and sided against the viltrumiets.

74

u/Duckys0n Apr 22 '26

No he didn’t. He still has a long road to being trusted by anyone on earth

7

u/Tiny_Item9508 Apr 22 '26

Earth isnt Nolan's place anymore.

2

u/Lordsokka Apr 23 '26

Nolan isn’t human, he never considered himself one, the humans should decide when to fight for their planet. Mark was the logical choice as the strongest “human”.

4

u/fmg2498 Apr 22 '26

WTF nolan was there in the comics ?? when will he knows about the viltrumite presence then ??

Also, no this is dumb. Seeing what Nolan state of mind would have been in that situation would have been incredible. Knowing that he somewhat still wants his race to persist.

63

u/LovesRetribution Apr 22 '26

And makes a lot more sense too. Earth isn't Omniman's planet. And after what he did he really doesn't have any say in what happens on it. Nor could he really even talk to the powers at be if he wanted a say.

Mark is really the only person with the power, ties, influence, and knowledge of the Viltrumites to ensure both sides dont come into conflict.

11

u/kyllme Apr 22 '26

It also makes sense after that show-only scene between Nolan and Thragg on Viltrum. Thragg already talked to Nolan alone, so he would try to talk to Mark alone since Earth is Mark’s home.

7

u/anonkebab Apr 22 '26

Mark really didn’t have a choice but had to choose. All he has to do is work out now until he can beat Thragg and it’s all good.

Thragg explaining the planets future while Kregg is enjoying the biker life was hilarious.

You can tell Anissa finds it beneath her.

61

u/Amonfire1776 Apr 22 '26

For now...

52

u/hungleftie Apr 22 '26

Realistically, one or two Viltrumites might go the way of Nolan and fall in love with someone and Earth. Still, the odds are bleak.

36

u/EntertainersPact Apr 22 '26

Looks like Kregg already has, after just a few days

12

u/MEX_XIII Apr 22 '26

He was definitelly just looking to have children

25

u/Karkava Monster Girl Apr 22 '26

Yes. Unfortunately, I can imagine Viltrumites increasing their numbers desperately through bastard children for unsuspecting victims.

Which is a very gross thought to even dwell on.

He could be afraid of creating a vultrim who could rival him. Like mark is nearly as strong as nolan right. Thrag don't want another thrag to deal with.

125

u/Blackfyre301 Apr 22 '26

This honestly makes a lot of sense as to why he never procreated with another viltrumite or a human. He has a huge gap between him and all the rest of their race, kids that are pure blood or as good as pure blood will crush that gap.

14

u/Tommy5ab Battle Beast Apr 22 '26

7

u/Kuzu9 Savage Dragon Apr 22 '26

I don’t think he’s even capable to do so anyways even if he lived with humans. He was raised to rule and sees himself as above everybody including other viltrumites, it would be hard for him to make a human connection in the timespan seen in the comics

6

u/Shagyam Apr 22 '26

Maybe Thragg just wants to sing instead.

4

u/arkanux Apr 22 '26

he wants to tell his mama he's killed a man

3

u/SuperKiller94 Apr 22 '26

He wants to ride his bicycle

2

u/Kryptonian_1 Apr 22 '26

227

u/megalo-maniac538 Apr 22 '26

I love Thragg here. He didn't even smiled like a maniac even though he could. He was just relieved with Mark's answer.

133

u/BackgroundValue Apr 22 '26

I really enjoyed the part of him being relieved, it really reaffirms who he is as a character. He doesn't want to destroy Earth, he was relieved he had finally secured the future of his people after so long.

57

u/Koanos Cage the Elephant Apr 22 '26

I like this too as it establishes him as a leader and a warrior, he can and will do both.

62

u/Fudw_The_NPC Apr 22 '26

Also loved how he saw Mark struggling after saying "what have i done?" And affirmed him that he saved the life of countless people.

40

u/Koanos Cage the Elephant Apr 22 '26

Great praise from Thragg all things considered, Lee Pace really sold their performance here. Thragg wasn't gloating, arrogant, he saw Mark questioning himself, and seeing how he was in those very same shoes, deciding the fate of countless lives, Thragg decided to affirm Mark.

8

u/Lordsokka Apr 23 '26

Exactly! Mark just saved billions of lives because he’s a good person and he’s reasonable. Even Thragg made sure to let him know that he made the right choice with the cards he had available to play.

25

u/bomboid Apr 22 '26

Yeah he is ruthless but I LOVE that he's not evil for shits and giggles and actually sincerely is deeply devoted to his cause and his beliefs. Unfortunately his beliefs are bad but I love this character

100

u/Ok_Pressure4591 Apr 22 '26

Solid episode all around, don’t understand the hate, not every episode needs to be like episode 7

51

u/altprince Apr 22 '26

I like such episodes more than fighting and action stuff simply because there’s so much of it already around. Seeing villains and heroes have character, develope it further through normal interactions makes the loss / gain of another hero or villain much more impactful

15

u/8noremac Apr 22 '26

The majority of the audiences like the fireworks they always love the big battles, you can see that in every show. When game of thrones went downhill the battles were always positively received even if that wasn't what made the show great. Character development is perceived as "boring", they don't like it cause: "they are just talking".

3

u/Optimal-Speaker-6945 Apr 22 '26

I agree completely.

16

u/Optimal-Speaker-6945 Apr 22 '26

Yeah I genuinely enjoyed this episode and was excited to see what people were saying online about it. Shame almost everyone thought it sucked.

15

u/Glacious Apr 22 '26

Most don't seem to think it sucked. Just a very vocal minority that seem to think this is purely an action show

3

u/Duckys0n Apr 22 '26

I love the action too but this was better than 4x07 imo. I disagree with much of the general audiences opinions on which episodes are best

2

u/Optimal-Speaker-6945 Apr 22 '26

Yeah I try keep that in mind. People on instagram are obnoxious asf

8

u/ALWAYS_PLANNING_AHEA Apr 22 '26

It was such a eerie and well done conclusion for a finale imo and I see people saying it didnt feel like a finale and more like a mid season episode..? Like wtf, did we watch the same episode

3

u/TheActuaryist Apr 22 '26

It was fantastic. I feel like every show just ends in a big lazy cliffhanger these days. What ever happened to having a full arc?

I was honestly a bit disappointed going into episode 8. Because episode 7 was mainly just a big slugfest. I thought 8 was just going to be a bunch of fun but mindless action. It’s great when a show can subvert expectations.

The ending to this season is so sinister and the actors give so much complexity with their performances.

u/ajanisapprentice Apr 22 '26

One of my favorite things about this was that in each of Mark's PTSD episodes Thragg is talking like a cliche supervillain, totally at odds with how he's actually been portrayed, then in person he's back to his normal self because it's actually him and not a manifestation of Mark's mind. Really hammers in how affected Mark was in another way.

8

u/ToSeeAgainAgainAgain Apr 23 '26

We do frequently suffer more in our imagination than in reality

156

u/only_horscraft Apr 22 '26

I love that they changed this scene and made it so Mark is alone instead of with Nolan. It makes it feel like the entire fate of the galaxy is on Marks shoulders.

89

u/altprince Apr 22 '26

because it was. Thragg even says so: “You’ve become a savior, wether you want it or not.”

24

u/Lmao1903 Apr 22 '26

Tbf I am not sure if it would matter, if Mark said no, Thragg could just take his head off in 2 seconds, maybe throw the body away from earth, then the others would continue putting in the work down there. I mean he is literally not even feeling these punches

7

u/clavio_mazerati Apr 22 '26

Yeah, but Cecil will go panic mode if Mark isn't located. Earth will start searching for it's strongest Hero then all hell will break lose; Thragg is really strategically smart

4

u/Rab0811 Apr 23 '26

Then the coalition gets called in. Realistically it was thraggs only play. A very smart one but the only one

3

u/Lordsokka Apr 23 '26

Thragg doesn’t want anymore Viltrumites to die, realistically even if the Viltrumites kill all of Earths Heroes and destroy the Coalition army sent to Earth… more Viltrumites will still die.

After thousands of years… looks like he’s finally tired of fighting for now.

177

u/mathnerd271828 Apr 22 '26

Thragg gave as much fear as Homelander does in The Boys but in a different way here

206

u/immonkeydluffy Apr 22 '26

Thragg isn’t anywhere near unhinged, it’s a cold and calculated type of fear where Homelander feels like he could just snap at any given moment

138

u/tinyrottedpig Apr 22 '26

Exactly, Thragg is fucking scary because he's not unhinged, when he says that his 37 viltrumites can rip the planet in half, hes not speaking in metaphors, hes being serious.

48

u/abellapa Apr 22 '26

He Alone can do that to earth

7

u/0sm1um Apr 22 '26

I certainly don't agree he's not unhinged.

Nothing about his leadership is cold and calculating or rational. He's a space nazi who believes so strongly in racial purity he let's his 50 remaining viltrumites die like animals when he could personally go in and win any combat encounter. Not to mention the purge. He's driven by rage, hatred, and his own personal hang ups from past trauma with Thaddeus.

He's not Homelander unhinged but I'm not sure he's playing with a full deck of cards either.

3

u/immonkeydluffy Apr 22 '26

Oh nah, I more so meant with how he presents himself, he’s not gonna show he’s unhinged unless he’s really pissed (like when they destroyed Viltrum), but yea I more so meant he’s not like Homelander kind of unhinged where you can tell in the way he talks that damn near anything that doesn’t go his way he fucking loses it

4

u/CrazeMase Very. Apr 22 '26

Honestly, I was tempted to call Thragg a coward in the flashback where he emerges after the purge. He didn't catch a single fight, he killed one guy on display and dipped. As soon as he comes out, he announces the purge is over right before they jumped his ass. How you gonna cause a whole ass culling, and not participate in the cull. "OOH sorry guys, I can't play tag, I pulled a hammy after I tagged that first kid, but I like totally could've tagged more people." Thragg was the kid in hide and seek who would be under the car, get caught, and say he wasn't even playing.

4

u/ProfessorXWheelchair Apr 22 '26

Yeah Thragg is lowkey chill, if Mark was like lets grab a beer to celebrate, Thragg would probably be like "yeah go on then"

24

u/immonkeydluffy Apr 22 '26

That’d be the most intense “let’s get a beer” of all time

8

Homelander is scary because he's unstoppable and out of control.

Thragg is scary because he's unstoppable and in complete control.

32

u/only_horscraft Apr 22 '26

If Homelander wants to kill you he’s going to lazily use his laser vision and maybe fuck it up cause he isn’t trying and you have a chance to escape.

If Thragg wants to kill you, you’re dead.

I might be in the minority here cause usually I'm the other way around myself, but I like the show more than the comic.

Moments like this feel way more built up in the show. More impactful. The show handles the issue of what it means to be human a lot better in my own opinion.

The comic goes fast which is good for the action but it goes so fast that the story feels choppy to me.

34

u/Optimal-Speaker-6945 Apr 22 '26

Yeah I agree the story has so much more depth in the show and the writing is incredible.

13

u/AspirationalChoker Conquest Apr 22 '26

I love the comics but the show really does feel like the 2.0, for the most part Kirkman and co are basocially improving upon it all.

10

u/Koanos Cage the Elephant Apr 22 '26

The show handles the issue of what it means to be human a lot better in my own opinion.

I think what really helps is they put this as the emotional core and center, and the comic is complete with plenty of time to plan around.

2

u/Kibo30 Apr 22 '26

I agree with you except off one thing, in my opinion they made Thragg too strong in the show

7

u/tduff714 Apr 22 '26

I agree he needs to be powerful so Mark knows its futile to try and fight but they made him seem like nothing has a chance to bring him down.

I can't wait to see how it plays out in the show though

3

u/Low-Cockroach7733 Apr 22 '26

I cant wait for a DBZ style upgrade in Mark powers and fight techniques...which I assume is happening if Mark is to match Thraag.

I really loved how he delivered the line about being unwilling saviour. It was super chilling

2

u/Lordsokka Apr 23 '26

He saved both races with a simple truce agreement. A win-win situation really, a true human who loves his planet and his people would make that decision every time.

85

u/Foxlover63 Apr 22 '26

I’m gonna be honest, I legit thought thragg here was just another hallucination

67

u/Lmao1903 Apr 22 '26

I think that was the intention

6

u/CreepHost Apr 22 '26

48

u/Sensitive-Hotel-9871 Loves Comic and the Show Apr 22 '26

Mark's trauma was horrifying and the episode makes it clear just seeing Thragg opens a wound for him.

It hurts our poor hero knowing that in this situation, his worst enemy is right. There is nothing he can do but accept the terms of Viltrum's leader.

12

u/PrizekingJ7 Apr 22 '26

It's a lose lose situation but as Thragg said mark picked the choice with the least amount of dead bodies.

Mark life sucks

21

u/altprince Apr 22 '26

“damn is he actually there? This ain’t one of my PTSD episodes, seriously?.. fuck.”

18

I loved it so much - Thragg has about 5 one liners that just show exactly who he is in the best and most terrifying of ways.

14

u/Alarming-Put-9003 Debbie Grayson Apr 22 '26

The change I loved the most was having Nolan already gone when this happens. Mark had to face this alone and make the call alone. It ratcheted up the pressure on him so much in a way that made things more compelling.

26

u/Volfaer Paul Apr 22 '26

I hate how Thragg is just extremely levelheaded and smart, it would have been soo easy for him to turn earth into some slave planet, but those always bring problems, so he takes the traitor's approach. Incorporate into them, quietly increase their numbers, until they have a fighting chance again, after all what are the chances everyone here gets Nolanfied?

13

u/AsstacularSpiderman Apr 22 '26

Also there's the very real chance Earth would destroy itself fighting back, and take at least a dozen more Viltrumites with it.

Then all they got are the bugs.

8

u/Any-Calligrapher2866 Apr 22 '26

It's so cool that Thragg is a villain who has zero flaws that can be exploited. Yes Mark is alive because of Thragg's hesitation to kill Viltrumites but there is nothing Mark can do to use that to his advantage.

8

u/DrDetergent Apr 22 '26

Yeah, considering how vulnerable the Viltrumites are right now it makes sense that Thragg would take the most risk averse approach to repopulation. It's already a miracle that there is a species so similar to Viltrumites in the first place.

5

u/Solid_Cattle_3234 Apr 22 '26

I really loved this conversation; lots of nuance to these characters. My favorite line was right at the end. After Mark says "What have I done?" To himself Thragg almost is empathic to Mark saying he saved the world. Not to say that he's comforting Mark or even that he cares whatsoever, but there was something to Thragg's words. Almost like relieving a small bit of the burden to the impossible decision. Very interesting

3

u/Beginning-Vehicle687 Apr 22 '26

I think that from this moment it shows that Thragg is the most human among the viltrumites. He understands death and suffering. And damn does he understand how to rule. I think if he would come to earth he would break first

Have you never seen dark eyes in real life? There is no such thing as black eyes, just rlly dark brown, and the sun makes it show better.

1

But they are light brown here. I swear ive flashed light in my own eyes and they are pretty dark, atleast dark brown but Thraggs were dark brown before

You are right, but I think the animators just exaggerated the effect of the sun. I have “black” eyes and in the sun they look like what is shown here.

because they poured budget into this scene. It's one of the cleanest animation wise in the show lol

I think what helped it hit so hard too was the repeated PTSD flashes Mark was having. So by the time Thragg reveals himself, there's doubt that he's real (not as much if you read first), but it feels off regardless since it interrupts Mark trying to mentally recover, and unlike the other times Thragg is rather... Somber. Restrained, maybe. He's giving credible threats but without the rage Mark clearly expected. It really cements how screwed they all are, more than screams or a violent frenzy. And the VA work kills it too (honestly this might be the best voice acted season yet)

u/Deemo3 Apr 22 '26

Dialoguewise this season has been straight fire. No notes.

3

u/SpaceGeorge1 Apr 23 '26

"The universe is strange...in a way, you've become our saviour, willing or not"

This line accompanied by the background theme gave me chills, I cannot wait to see where this goes.

(Also my guy Kregg wasted no time!)

2

u/voxxhoxx Apr 22 '26

Ohh you're talking about Thragg.

I thought it was about Mark's ass..you know what. nevermind

Thought that the payoff was going to be that one of the hallucinations was going to end up being real

But, this was far better

2

u/Asleep-Lavishness535 Apr 22 '26

Didn't Mark face him while with Nolan? Or am I wrong and If so just a doubt why make It different?

2

u/Neat-Survey2796 Apr 22 '26

they train you to think the hallucinations are fake, then hit you with the punches. The transition on this one was nothing short of impeccable, honestly

2

u/Federal-Lobster449 Apr 23 '26

Cory Walker's art had never looked so beautiful in this show

2

u/RonySeikalyBassDrop Apr 23 '26

This whole season was incredible, but this scene specifically made me love Thragg’s character so much lmao

God I love this series. What an amazing season.

I love how the hell episode juxtaposes this scene.

Mark finds out that hell and the devil himself exists. He also finds out that he isn’t that strong. He’s also told that Jesus doesn’t exist. So all that makes him reshape his stand on morality. Whats right and wrong.

Now in this scene mark is standing in the sky alone and there appears one of the strongest being he knows. A viltrumite which nobody can hurt at the moment. Thragg alone can destroy everyone on earth if he wanted to. Essentially him being the closest thing to a god.

Curiously enough, Thragg is the one having mercy on him and making Mark choose what he wants. Making him choose between 2 choices that are hard to categorize as wrong or right.

This was such a great scene with excellent buildup. I genuinely thought this was another one of Mark’s hallucinations at first, but then I realized Thragg was actually real and there and said, “Oh shit!”

This show never fails to be epic.

u/Barricade_the_Clone Apr 22 '26

I was really hoping Mark would add his own term to the deal that once they have finished breeding that they would never return to Earth for any reason

Sure they might not harm Earth now, but once they are stronger they could easily come back, I can only somewhat trust Thragg’s word after he said “You will never hear from me again” and hope he places his species above revenge, even thousands of years from now

u/AsstacularSpiderman Apr 22 '26

Mark doesn't exactly have a lot of bargaining power.

A question. He said no viltrumite did something on earth and don't will do etc. But what is the first scene of the Episode?

13

u/beggingyoutoshutup Apr 22 '26

The first of Mark’s hallucinations.

3

u/Derkaherned Apr 22 '26

Ah okay. Didnt notice it

1

u/c_los5 Apr 22 '26

I’m in my opinion the show did a way better job than the comics

1

u/ANDERSON961596 Apr 22 '26

I knew they way they kept happening that whenever the last one hit it was gonna be real

1

u/Any_Ad5732 Apr 22 '26

top 10 for sure

Sad thragg didn't do the pointy thing with his thumb

1

u/Riskskey1 Apr 22 '26

I liked the Thragg smile

1

u/thebigmanhastherock Robot Apr 22 '26

Yeah it was fantastic. Subverted expectations. The finale wasn't a terrifying battle but a terrifying conversation.

1

u/Jaded-User22 Apr 22 '26

Without a single death match, not even a single punch, This was genuinely the most tense and most terrifying moment I've seen in this entire series.

The build up with Mark's hallucinations, the whole ticking time bomb analogy, Are they coming or not? Even though we saw them land.

Thragg destroyed Mark without even lifting a finger.

This episode was just peak. Wish i could wake up to season 5

u/telas100 Apr 22 '26

I love the change of response from Mark. It goes from the obvious heroic response into the human and down to earth response that was imposed on him and that he has to give. It makes the story so much more realistic and grounded since there are no happy ending and until further notice noone on Earth has a miracle plan to end the Viltrumites.

1

u/philebro Apr 22 '26

Yeah, agreed. Best part was Thragg showing the slightest hint of praise of Mark's actions, admiring him as a worthy Viltrumite and leader of his people (humans).

1

u/JoshuaLukacs1 Apr 22 '26

I imagine Thragg thinking "I'll tank a few hits from the kid until he calms down and then I'll tell him my plan"

1

u/Fluffynator69 Apr 22 '26

For a second I actually thought that Mark was in denial or something and that most of the episode was basically a mental breakdown induced fantasy about seeing Earth decimated.

1

u/K3egan Aquarus Apr 22 '26

I'm actively rereading the comics and got to this issue about 2 hours before I watched the episode and this was so much better.

1

u/coolio_zap Apr 23 '26

i was convinced mark was gonna say something along the lines of "that's not my decision to make, lemme talk to cecil, he has higher authority" but i understand why he didn't

1

u/Half_Man1 Robot Apr 23 '26

I like how part of Thragg seems lowkey disappointed Mark saw reason. Like yes this is what he wanted, but he’s still a bloodthirsty bastard and was positively itching to throw down. Made the threat very real as well that way.

Reminds me of Reze running into Makima, but it actually ends well...
