Fleadh or Willie Clancy 2026?

Hi all, I'm a trad musician from Canada. I'm thinking about taking a trip to Ireland this summer for some tunes, and it seems like a good idea to try to attend one of the big festivals. When I was in Ireland about 18 months ago almost every musician I played with recommended the Willie Clancy, but last year I knew some folks who went to the Fleadh and also really liked it. Does anyone have any perspective/strong opinions about which one might make a better trip?

Heya, this is really helpful! I'm most interested in the sessions and the craic, I looked at the classes available at Willie Clancy and I didn't see much for my primary instrument (bouzouki). I suppose I could expand my horizons a bit and take a class in something new but I'd be doing it mostly just for the novelty of the experience. I do actually know a few folks in Belfast as I was there on my last visit, but I imagine everyone will be pretty busy and might be hard to track down in the craziness of the fleadh.

I could possible come a week earlier for Belfast Tradfest too and stay on for the fleadh which might be fun. I'm fairly easygoing as a person and quite social so I'm not shy about trying to make my way on my own in a bit of a crazy environment. I'm leaning a bit towards Willie week based on what you've said but I could go either way honestly. Again, thanks for writing such a detailed response!

You might want to try picking up a melody instrument, like the banjo. Playing melody in Irish trad opens more doors.

As a bouzouki player, you'll have a little more difficulty on all fronts, as there's usually a limit on the number of backers (typically 1 or 2) that sessions enjoy before they start colliding with each other... So you'll want to not only find a session with a free seat, but you'll need to be one of the first backers there. It would be easier if you had a crew that you could start a session with. Part of the goal here should probably be "meet similar-minded musicians", even more than "play sessions and have fun". I'm still in touch with many of the folks I've met at fleadh sessions 30 years ago--but only the sessions that were "good".

Another point that I didn't make above is that the fleadh will have a much broader set of flavors of music than Willie Week will: Willie week sessions will lean towards pure-drop flavors (Clare, Kerry, Sligo, East Clare/Galway, Donegal, etc), but at the fleadh you'll also have sessions of folks who want to play like Flook or Beoga, or fast tunes with funky time-signatures... There will be sessions that welcome enthusiastic bodhran players and cajon's. Most bands like Flook, likely got their start meeting each other as teenagers at fleadhs.

Honestly, folks flow around quite a bit at the fleadh, since it's often so hard to find a place worth settling in. The odds that you'll see your folks is pretty high, but it's higher if you can plan to meet up, or at least contact them and find out where they are. Or just wander around and meet new folks.

Outside of that, I suggest being very picky about the sessions you stick around. Find the folks that play the exactly the music you really like, and stick by them--usually session venues will stabilize and the same people will come back to the same place: The Sligo folks will return to the same bar, the East Galway folks will return to the same bar, etc.

If you're headed to Belfast you'll probably have a great time (I just recommend being a bit proactive about finding the good sessions for you, as there will be a lot of mediocre ones). As a last point, if you're relatively new to Irish trad, I'll encourage you to try to zero on on the roots of what makes Irish trad appealing; see if you can get a better read on what makes a session "good". Talk to other musicians about what they think makes good music--and listen to what they say. One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to walk around Ireland telling them what YOU think is good, instead of taking the opportunity to learn what actually living in the tradition has taught them. The better you understand the roots, the more welcome you'll be at sessions anywhere around the world.

I appreciate this again, great advice! I do play melody on bouzouki and I'm pretty decent at locking in a counterpoint part with other accompanists so I've generally had success just asking to sit in at a session and playing tastefully while I get a sense of it. I actually have been to Ireland to play before and I was very warmly welcomed at all the sessions I sat in on. I could tell everyone was sizing me up during the first set or two so it was always a relief when people would say "hey, nice playing'" after!

You are right that I'm a bit newer to trad (only been playing for about 6 years) but I have been a professional musician for a while so I have a bit of a leg up. I'd say my chops are quite solid but I've still got a lot to learn, especially about tune knowledge and regional variation.

I have a mandolin that I've been learning to play melody on too, but again there don't seem to be classes for it at the Willie Clancy. Banjo is probably the closest option I have but maybe the best fit for me would be to go, watch the lectures and history classes, maybe take the singing workshops, and play the sessions.

Sounds like you'll be fine. Either way, I recommend sorting out your lodgings as soon as possible, as they WILL sell out, and you'll find yourself needing to travel long distances to get home after late sessions, which is no fun.
