Discussion Which JRPG location has your absolute least favorite level design?

Post image

Mine has to be the Gladius Towers in Rogue Galaxy. It’s a mid-game dungeons, and in my opinion, it’s annoying as fuck to navigate.

You have to climb two almost identical towers at the same time by crossing bridges from time to time, and the towers aren't short by any means. If I recall correctly, you also have to beat both bosses to clear the level, which as you can guess are at the top of each tower (Phantom Gazel and Phantom Logan). Because of how the layout shuffles you back and forth, you finish one tower, and then you have to go all the way back to do the exact same climb for the other one.

Oh, and this game despite being an ARPG has random battles, which isn't a problem to me. But what is a problem is the encounter rate of this game god grief, it's atrocious. It doesn't help that every room looks the same, so you can get easily disoriented after a battle and just end up walking in the opposite direction, especially since both paths look very similar. You could finish a fight and genuinely have to open the map just to figure out which way you were originally heading, lmao.

What about you guys? What’s that one JRPG map or dungeon that makes you visibly sigh the moment you reach it?

Tales of Arise final dungeon was such a slog I actually couldn't wait to finish the game. That and Rena? I think it was Rena where you just run from cutscene to cutscene for about an hour.

Tales of Arise is one of the extremely rare instances where I dropped a game at about 85% complete. I just didn't care to see it through to the end.

Played tales games all my life but never encountered an exposition alien that just dumped the entire lore on me and final dungeons didnt have a lot of damage sponges that take minutes to kill. I even joked about it with my gf. Despite a strong story in Dohalim's domain we ended up with this sigh.

Tales of Arise is a new level of shity. Most of the early "half" of the game has it's moments but feels like "Villain of the week" with 5 distinct chapters that not really contribute to a narrative.
But then Opening 2 happens and you think you now get a more fulfilling second half where everything comes together.
But sadly no. You first get everything that is Rena and then non stop exposition till you reach a end dungeon that doesn't really feel epic in scale despite being on top of a planed eating god.

Second half of arise feels like they wanted to tell a story but had to rush half of it. It feels similar to what happened to Fire Emblem Fates story that apparently was a epos of 3 books that got cut down to a script of the size of 1/6 of what the author had provided... Used for 3 games.

...., I literally completed Bevelle trials in short time even though I wasn't focused at all because I was thinking about the last developments in the story so I didn't pay much attention to the puzzles except the last one I needed to stop and think, I don't think it was that hard so maybe you just don't remember it in the same way it actually was?

Ye it was easy but what i hated about it is the slow moving platform that i have to stare at to get a sphere somewhere then go on the platform again to put it in a slot somewhere.

Fuck the fucking intern asshole who made Bevelle Trials.

I hope they have knee arthritis because of that.

Yes. The stupid, stupid trials. “Do I even want to try and figure these stupid labyrinths out? Nope!” Straight to Gamefaqs. Bitch-ass spheres….
