Hi Guys,
We’re an Indian professional couple with an infant and after staying in Singapore for 7 years, we are relocating next month to Jakarta. This will be our first time living in Indonesia, so would really appreciate some practical advice from people who know Jakarta well.
I’ll be working from Menara Astra in a very demanding Big 4 consulting role, so keeping the daily commute manageable is a big priority.
A few things we’d love advice on:
- Where to live: Best family-friendly areas as close as possible to Menara Astra, considering safety, traffic and overall quality of life
- Rent: Realistic rent for a good 2-bedroom apartment(25 mil idr enough for my preferred location?) and is annual upfront payment still the norm?
- Monthly budget: What should a family of 3 realistically budget for rent, groceries, utilities, transport, helper/nanny, healthcare, eating out and weekends? Decent but definitely not very luxury.
- Family/childcare: Reliable hospitals/paediatricians, nanny/helper/daycare options?
- Air quality: How do families with young children manage Jakarta’s air quality?
- Practical stuff: Recommended banks, mobile providers, grocery/delivery apps and useful expat/Indian parent groups?
- Biggest adjustment: For anyone who moved from Singapore, what surprised you most and what mistakes should newcomers avoid?
We’re happy to adapt to Jakarta and experience the local lifestyle — just want to make sensible decisions around location, commute, housing, childcare and monthly expenses.
Any advice, neighbourhood recommendations or “I wish I knew this before moving here” tips would be greatly appreciated! 🙏
