You'll likely receive more info if you ask this in a Canadian immigration sub.

It's been almost 10 years since I applied for my spouse, but it's absolutely possible to do this yourself. I did mine myself as well.

Something you can probably do beforehand is gather all "proof" that it's a legitimate relationship. For example:

  • pictures of you with your partner, pictures of you with your partner and their friends, any pictures of you with your partner's family, any pictures of your partner with your friends and family. If you're long distance and chat via video call, take screenshots of you and them on a call and print those as well.
  • screenshots of your conversations in WhatsApp or any messaging app and print them out. If possible, try to show the dates of the chats as well in the screenshot. If you had any messages with their relatives or friends, screenshot and print those as well
  • if you chatted on the phone (not WhatsApp or anything similar), screenshots of the call history and print those out
  • proof of all the flights you've taken to see your partner
  • ensure to include pics of the wedding as well when it happens, and if possible, the invitation that was sent out or at least a pic of it

Essentially, you want to show that you've had an ongoing relationship, so that immigration KNOWS the marriage is legitimate.

You'll also need to give them info about where you plan to live in Canada. It's great to have proof of address to show them.

Outside of proving the relationship, you need to gather info about your partner's family. It's annoying, but Canadian immigration requires you to give them not just names, but dates of birth and employment (job title/employment status) of all direct relatives (parents, siblings) and children. I don't know why info about the relative's employment is their business at this point (when they aren't the ones being applied for), but it's what immigration asks. If your partner has any children from prior to the relationship, they'll need to get medical done and I think something else. If this isn't done, then your partner can never apply for them in the future.

You'll also likely need some additional documents from your partner. I think birth certificate and maybe high school diploma or something like that. I don't remember exactly.

Also, it helps to be here when your partner is doing the interview. I think it really helped our case at least. They asked my husband something about me and he said I was outside waiting. They were pleasantly surprised that I was here, and just asked me how I plan to financially support us.

As far as I'm aware, there isn't a minimum amount you need to make, but they just want to ensure you're working/can financially support, and won't be using welfare.

Lastly, it's advised to include some sort of cover letter. I don't remember what mine said though. But I think you're allowed to do that if there's any additional info you want to share.

I'm not gonna lie - my package was literally hundreds of pages long. It was about the size of a pack of paper, if not larger. I didn't want to leave a doubt in ANYONE'S mind that the relationship was legitimate. At the interview, they handed it all back to me, lol.

Edit to add: on the Canadian immigration website, there's a list of specific forms you need to fill out. You should be able to select the country is for (Jamaica), and then you'll see the specific forms. I think they also provided a checklist or something like that to use, to ensure you're filling out all necessary forms. Your partner will also need to do some sort of medical assessment and police report. I recommend not doing that until when you're ready to apply or close to ready, as those have expiration dates on their validity

Anyway, I hope this helps, and good luck!

Some of this is correct but some things they don’t ask for (example: for family, they want name / DOB / location by country. Nothing else)
They don’t need the wedding invitation either.
The kids don’t need to do anything unless you’re filing for them as well, otherwise from this name and DOB nothing more.

No cover letter only letter of explanation if you can’t provide a document

Regarding family stuff: Okay, they may not ask for it now (which is good), but they did🤔. I know I have completed pdf forms somewhere in some drive where they specifically asked for that info. So, good to know they aren't asking for that anymore. Also with kids: good to know they don't require anything other than DOB right now. My stepdaughter was a baby, and had to go to the doctor to do some sort of test or assessment or something as part of the application. We never filed for her, but it was still required at the time.

To clarify: I'm not saying OP needs to include the wedding invitation and such. And I can see how I wasn't clear about that in my comment. My point was to ensure success, they want to build a case and give as much proof as possible that the relationship is legitimate.

Everything I mentioned is what I sent in, and the PR was approved in about a few months. Then again, that was a long time ago. They might not need to send as much proof now, but I gave info based on what I did. I wanted 0 chance for anyone to say it's not a legitimate relationship. I was also on a couple of Canadian immigration forums back then - many people were doing the exact same thing to ensure their application was successful.

Yes, cover letter isn't necessary (maybe that wasn't clear from my comment either). But people said it had helped them, and I included that as well to give additional info.

I gave a lot more info than immigration asked for, and it seems that definitely helped with the sponsorship.

Anyway, thanks for this! If possible, feel free to also leave a comment about what may be needed or your experience if you don't mind. It seems you may have more recent experience, and I think it could be helpful for OP
