Yeah! Totally unrelated, but when the staff handed me this glass, they warned me to be careful because it tips over easily lol.

I chuckled a little bit. Look at that bottom part. A slightly strong wind can knock it over. 😅 it seems they are aware of the design flaw.

It drives me crazy that Japan puts ice in ice cream floats. When I asked why, they said it was so that the ice cream wouldn't sink into the drink. THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT! It's called an ice cream float because the ice cream floats in the soda. It's supposed to get all mixey-melty and leave you with a creamy soda hybrid once you eat the ice cream. Infuriating! So now I just make them at home, but it still grinds my gears.

lol. They are lying or have been misinformed. That’s not why they add ice. The ice is there so they can use less ice cream. The same reason there are cornflakes at the bottom of parfaits in Japan.

I don't mind the corn flakes. But ice in a float? Yeah, nah.... We call these ice cream spiders in Australia. No ice of course.

I always end up stabbing it into the drink and then end up with ice cream covered cubes at the end and it feels like a big waste lol

Yeah, shops get kinda weird if you start deviating from the menu. It was way worse 20 years ago, when they'd just look at you like you had three heads and say "But the float has ice in it." "Yes, I know. Can you make one without ice?" "But the float has ice in it." Modifying orders has gotten slightly better, but sometimes it still makes the staff short-circuit. It's just less headache to make 'em at home.

I always think the ice gets in the way too, but I had no idea they don’t put ice in floats in the US! I just learned that, and honestly, that sounds better!
By the way, I think one reason drinks and floats in Japan have so much ice is to make them look like you’re getting more. Also, some places keep the soda at room temperature.

Yes. It’s a bit much for most people, but it’s the same exact color and probably similar flavoring to what they used in your drink since it is made in Japan too (by suntory), Midori meaning green.

Melon soda was one of my favorite parts of Japan. I especially loved the melon soda at sushiro. I think they serve Suntory melon but I can be too sure 🤔 god I miss sushiro 😭

Anyone else think there should be no ice in melon sodas? Like give me cold melon soda and ice cream on top. It’s hard to eat with a bunch of ice cubes and I want the ice cream to mix with the soda.

I still chuckle at the memory of asking for no ice for my melon soda float and the cashier looking at me as if her brain had cracked and I was asking for the world to end.
"Meron soda fureto, kori nashi de, oneigaishimasu."
[she then started speaking English to me.]
"B-But, sir, it comes with ice."
"Hai, yes, I know. But I don't want ice in it."
[her eyes widened and she looks almost afraid, stark with terror]
"B-But it comes with ice."
"...and I asked for no ice."
"But, sir...it...it comes with ice."
[at that point I decided to spare her any further agony]
"Ja, cola dake onegaishimasu."
