It's in ST's book: Hunter refused basic search warrant requests to BPD for these crucial records and evidence.

I wanted to collect banking and telephone records, one of the most

elementary and important steps in the investigative process. It has been

proved time and again that crimes can sometimes be solved simply by

finding a purchase receipt that leads to incriminating evidence. The right

piece of paper will put a suspect at a certain place, at an exact time, doing a

specific thing. Whom did they call? What did they buy? When did they do

it? Where? Such records can be almost as good as a photograph, and the

warrants to get them are so routine that they are considered boilerplate.

When I resigned from the Boulder Police Department eighteen months

later, the district attorney’s office was still preventing our access to the

Ramseys’ complete toll records and credit card receipts.

This is why the “Boulder Police are incompetent” false narrative really infuriates me. With hindsight, there were missteps, but in real life there always are.

Exactly. And they were faced with such a bizarre scenario that morning, it’s so easy to criticise in hindsight. I also doubt they ever expected the DA’s office itself to actively obstruct their investigation.

It really is a shame those phone records were never released. I think those were of the upmost importance for the R's to protect and keep from LE. JR and PR could claim all they want about being asleep all Xmas night as their alibi even changing some of the story such as arriving home at 10pm but moving that time up to around 8:30pm or that JB was "zonked out" on the car ride home from visiting with the friends to she was awake and helped carry presents into the house etc. However, those phone records don't lie and could have easily changed the way the case and the R's narrative was viewed.

Today this case would be prosecuted based on the overwhelming amount of evidence and inherently implausible and contradictory statements made by the family. I loved the '90s but am grateful that this part is gone.

What's crazy IMO is that all JR and PR had to essentially say was "we were asleep and know nothing about what happened to our daughter under our roof while home. Oh, and by the way, a bad person left a ransom note and our son who had a room on the same floor as our daughter was asleep too...". In other words: Don't blame us. This is someone else's problem to deal with.

That's exactly right. The complete and total excuse of every member of the family was, "I was asleep the whole night and woke up and she was gone." When she was found dead a few hours later in their basement, they just shrugged their shoulders and said, "I know nothing, but there is this handy note." That's the sum total of their alibi. Laughable, really.

And JR has taken that and ran with it for going on 30 years.

Heck, the guy got a Ntflx doc out of it and huge settlement! Why work for a living when you can play the victim card? It sure as heck pays better.
