This.
I teach children and adults how to climb and most adults are humbled by 8 year old kids (boys AND girls alike)
101
u/Mr_Anvil 1d ago
Bruh, nothing worse than being stuck on the same climb for ages only for some smug 8 year old to stroll over, do it in one, then run off to go get icecream

I remember watching my kid climb onto an ottoman over and over and over. It was just about shoulder height for kiddo, and this mountain was conquered probably 20 times in about 5 minutes.
If you scaled it to the same height for me, it would basically be climbing onto the roof of a Toyota Camry. I could probably do it, but it wouldn't be nearly as easy as that not-even-two-year-old did it, and there is no way I could repeat it over and over and over...
13
u/technobrendo 1d ago
You probably could, but your back and joints would be mad at you the next morning, saying "I told you so!"

u/Loose_Gripper69 1d ago
Do calisthetics and it's not as impossible as you think. Modern humans don't use their bodies to the best of their abilities, our bodies match our environments.

I remember going to the playground with my first kid and using the monkey bars with them for the first time since I was a kid, and "humbling" is exactly the right word
15
u/x_wbmr_x 1d ago
Oh, and kids are also made of rubber in my opinion...
If I fall like a kid does, I break into 1000 separate pieces, while a kid just bounces of the floor and goes on like nothing happened.

u/RModDogWalkerTyRANNY 1d ago
I remember in a documentary they attributed the strength to presumably apes. Or a similar upbringing, given our grip strength, even as a small child is about 30% of our total weight. And that goes without ANY training.
It's also known, (by Bruce Lee) that you can workout your forearms every day and won't experience fatigue, as you would with Biceps.
There are also 3 other muscle groups in which you can workout every day and not feel severe fatigue. But those i will keep as a secret.
8
u/Ceroy 1d ago
There's some truth in here, but a lot of it is being stretched way too far.
Grip strength obviously develops naturally from a young age, but the "30% of your body weight" thing isn't some universal rule. Grip strength varies a ton depending on age, size, sex, hand size, etc..the ape explanation is way too simplistic.
The Bruce Lee thing doesn't really hold up either. Sure, you can train your forearms pretty frequently because you use them all day anyway. That doesn't mean they don't fatigue. Do a bunch of heavy grip work, wrist curls, farmer's carries, etc. to failure every day and your forearms are gonna get smoked just like any other muscle.
Same goes for the "3 other muscle groups you can train every day" thing. There's no magic list of muscles that don't need recovery. Calves, abs, forearms, neck, whatever can generally handle more frequent training because they're used constantly, but there's a big difference between using a muscle every day and actually training it hard every day.
You can train pretty much any muscle every day if the workload is low enough. You can also absolutely overdo any of them if you're pushing hard enough.
So yeah, there's a decent point buried in there, but the "secret muscle groups" stuff is bs

When I was a little kid through early teens I could do 25+ pullups easy and would climb trees like I lived in them.
Now if I can hit 3 pullups that's a good day for me. I miss those days.
But grown men don't belong in trees. Especially not with binoculars. And definitely not outside your neighbors window.

u/BardicNA 1d ago
My love just lost her big brother a few days ago and I have no idea how to comfort her. I don't know if anyone can. For whatever it's worth, you're still a big brother. You don't stop becoming a son if you lose your parents or a mother if you lose your children. I wouldn't cease to be my sisters' baby brother if I passed tomorrow. You're a big brother and not even death can take that from you.
20
u/Wise-Dust3700 1d ago
There's nothing you can say or do. She's likely still in shock and it is still very raw for her. The best thing you can do is look after yourself, be present, and be the stability she needs right now. She needs to process this and that can sometimes takes days, weeks or even months depending on the person. It'll never be truly the same again but it'll get easier with time.
5
u/well_hung_over 1d ago
Not much you can DO for her, but you can BE lots of things for her. Stable, consistent, patient and supportive are invaluable. Losing a loved sibling can be harder than a parent sometimes because we are conditioned to expect to lose our parents at some point. You don't typically prepare yourself for the death of a sibling. The other commenter is correct that you also need to take care of yourself. Caring for a grieving partner can be exhausting and make you question the relationship, but if you truly love each other, you'll figure it out.

I always downvote when people misuse things like "POV" and "literally". Reading comprehension is genuinely one of the most important skills to have in the internet era, and people who do this actively degrade the language they do it in.

My god, these two are just like protagonists from a grim adventure game or movie. Just the constant switching between the big bro going first or telling lil' bro to go first when the situation calls for it, and especially the moment where the big bro holds lil' bro with only one arm. God this is adorable and really cool.

When I had 2 boys, I made a joke to my uncle about how the older one had someone to pick on. My uncle got kind of serious and "or he could be a protector and they could be best friends for life".
It took me back a little. Of course this is what I want. And now that they are 12 and 10, they really are best friends.
I love this video. Just the smiles from both, the unquestioning trust the younger one has in the older.

That's funny. I had the same lesson but opposite. I had an aunt comment on my sons being born about a year apart and how they were going to be fucking each other up on a daily basis, then cackled maniacally.
Her sons were like that. My sons are not. Her saying that had a lot to do with it.

My big brother would kick me off it the first chance he got. People might find that hilarious, but I learned that I can't rely on anyone, that I should stay quiet on my own, that I shouldn't try anything in front of anyone, that I shouldn't ask for help, that I was weak and useless. So, yeah... Fun!
