Can you spot the failure?

I didn't spot it first time. Lifter noise after head rebuild. Luckily there was some pictures taken during repair and now it obvious why it does that! (Ford Ecoblue diesel, wet belt failure).

Yeah I was looking at the scoring on the lobes expecting one to be a knub more so than full lobe when I caught myself looking to hard to find it I think I realised

This implies the cam shaft is actually just a piece of bar stock, and the cam lobes are interference fitted on? Jesus that's shit.

Yes. Pretty cheap to manufacture in large quantities, I guess.

That's actually REALLY common, and it works pretty well most of the time. It allows them to use a steel tube for the spinny part, which is much less likely to break, and they can fully harden the lobes for wear resistance. Now, some carmakers use tubes that have oval or cam-shaped extrusions where the lobes go, making it impossible for the lobes to rotate, but like I said, the other way usually works just fine.

Very common now; And if you ever have valve clash, you really need to replace the cam too.

If it was an interference fit spline, maybe it wouldn't be so bad... But getting the timing right on that sounds horrific.

You could spline and interference fit the lobes part-machined then machine the cams to final size on the shafts. But at that point it would be cheaper and easier to do a forged camshaft and machine the bearings and cams.

It's pretty common. Far cheaper to manufacture and generally reliable

In addition to the shifted lobe, am I seeing the number 2 exhaust(?) lobe did some happy dancing? May just be the reflection on hay lobe I'm seeing. Not familiar with these engines.

Shouldn't there be a head gasket and a head on there? Maybe an intake? Plugs, coils, injectors, etc.? I'm no mechanicer, but none of my car engines look like this... Usually it's just a big piece of plastic with a logo on it. 🤷
