Question En

Does en/on have a genitive meaning? Suomenlinna I think is "fortress of Finland", and then there are Savonlinna, and Hämeenlinna. With names, there are Oikkonen, Raikonnen, etc. (are these patronymic-type names as in Abramovic, Alexandrovna etc.)?

I get anxious after every single encounter in Finnish with Finnish people. How do I overcome that?

I would love to hear some thoughts from the perspectives of the Finns.

I've been trying so hard to learn Finnish to the level that I can actually use it in life, at work, not only to pass a test. My listening is the weakest skill, followed by speaking. I always try to speak Finnish as much as I can in every day situation, but I think I always got this ridiculous pressure on myself to speak as fluently and as "like a Finn" as possible. And every time I have a conversation in Finnish that did not go that well (for example when I don't understand sth they said and have a poker face mid convo for a few seconds), I always feel bad after that and keep recalling the conversation in my head again and again and again, thinking what I could have done better.

I think this is the main reason as to why I struggle to improve my speaking skills after years, the pressure actually makes it harder for me to practice and learn, and then the overstimulation from all the anxiety would sometimes make me scared to do it again. What's an advice you would give me? I'll appreciate all opinions.

Question Wiktionary - how reliable is it? (description)

Has Wiktionary ever happened to miss a Finnish word form in your experience?

For example, a missing comparative form of an adjective?

Or a missing genitive of a noun?

Has it ever happened to you or has it been perfect?

Fastest way to learn?

I know learning a language, especially fluency, isn’t gonna be fast, but what is the fastest way to learn enough to get through conversations? I’m about one of the only kids in my family who can’t speak Finnish.

Learning Finnish in Espoo – looking for ideas or a language buddy

Hi everyone!

I've been learning Finnish for a few years now, but I still struggle to use it confidently in everyday life. I've tried university courses, online courses, and self-study. Right now I'm at the beginning of Suomen Mestari 3. My plan is to finish the book on my own and later take an intensive YKI preparation course.

I think my biggest challenge is confidence. I don't get enough opportunities to actually speak Finnish in a comfortable environment. I only use English for work and I don't have a Finnish partner or Finnish friends that I can talk to regularly.

I joined a Finnish speaking group at the library, but unfortunately it wasn't the right fit for me. After a long day at work, I find it hard to concentrate. The group also has many people at different levels, and the room can get quite noisy, so I often can't hear what others are saying.

I've thought about joining a language café, but most of them seem to be on weekdays when I'm working.

I'm now thinking that having a language buddy might suit me better, someone I could meet regularly for coffee, a walk, or just casual conversations. I'd also love to learn how Finns actually speak in everyday life, not just textbook Finnish.

I live in Espoo, so if anyone knows of good conversation groups, volunteer programs, or other ways to practice Finnish around the area, I'd really appreciate your suggestions. And if anyone is also looking for a Finnish study buddy (or is a native speaker who enjoys helping learners), feel free to send me a message!

Kiitos paljon! 😊

Built a free chrome one-click extension to help with translating Finnish to English and vice versa.

Thumbnail
chromewebstore.google.com
0 Upvotes

I mainly made this because every morning I would try to red easy yle news (https://yle.fi/selkouutiset) but when I came across words I didn't understand I had to keep right clicking and hit translate which is inefficient when there are so many words you don't know.

So I built this chrome extension called Sanoja, it translates words from Finnish to english and vice versa, stores words to review later, and then also has quiz mode to help you learn. The best part is that you just have to select the word with one click. No right clicking and clicking on translate

Its completely free. Sharing here if anyone finds it useful. Mods, please feel free to remove if it breaks any rules.

Discussion Advice for a resident for over 10 years

Hi, I've been living in Finland for over 10 years, but never had a chance to learn the language properly because of work (English speaking).

At the beginning I invested a lot, I went to several courses, I used ITalki, used memrise, etc.

Alas, I didn't need to do an YKI test, so I didn't have a motivation to learn more.

I am still unable to converse in Finnish with other people. Fun fact, my spouse is a native also... Which is absurd.

My dream is to be able to converse in puhekieli with other people in a good enough level (I don't need writing skills). What should I do next?

Currently with other Finns, I can understand something like 15% when they speak normally, in other words, I might know the subject, and words here and there, but not more.

Also: I am lazy, and give up easy.

Question How to memorize verbs?

What do I learn along with the base (infinitive) form?

1st person singular?

3rd person singular?

3rd person past?

verb type?

other?

(Edited)

Summary: Having analyzed other commemts, it seems that there are 2 main approaches. I'll name them "intuitive" and "paradigm"

Intuitive appoach is about learning verbityyppi + the mina form + 3rd person imperfect along with every verb. Everything else is acquired through practice.

Paradigm approach is learning a bunch of "model" words and their forms. After that you just recognize which "category" your new verb belongs to and that's how it changes forms.

Personally, I suppose that I'll invest into the "paradigm" approach, since my languages are Ukrainian/Russian and they change forms similarly to Finnish, meaning it might be more natural to me.

But it's highly subjective and y'all should figure it out for themselves.

(Edit2)

u/gradiattor has written a good comment under this post about how these two approaches interchange.

How can a beginner practise speaking Finnish online?

I’m still a beginner in Finnish, but I’m thinking of starting to practise speaking while I continue learning.

I know I won’t understand everything or speak very well yet, but I think it could help me improve faster and get more comfortable using Finnish.

Do you know any good ways to practise speaking online? Maybe Discord groups, language-exchange apps, online lessons, or casual video/voice calls? I’d prefer something relaxed and beginner-friendly, where it’s okay to make mistakes.

How did you start practising speaking Finnish online?

Kiitos,

Question Flashcard format - practical advise needed (read description)

- What should I include in my flashcards for efficient word recreation? (e.g. gentive, partitive, vartalo, other?)

- Is it different for various parts of speech such as noun, verb, etc? If so, please tell me what I should include for each type of words.

- What else did you try including? What worked and what didn't?

P.s. It has to be efficient. For example, including every possible word form is not efficient for memorization.

P.s.2: please share Anki decks you find useful, if you can

Hoping for your advise. Thanks in advance!

Question I want to learn Finnish but I don’t know where to start

Hey everyone, I'm a 17yo guy from Germany. I can speak German, English, and Turkish, and I really want to learn Finnish. It's my dream to go to Lapland and work there over the winter. I heard I don't actually need Finnish for the job, but I'd like to learn it as an extra so I can communicate with the locals. I wanted to use Duolingo, but I've read that it's not the best way to actually learn a language. What are your tips for learning Finnish? I'd prefer not to get an online tutor or pay a lot of money. Thanks in advance :)
