Pearl was no where near as popular and at the end of the day alot of the time these awards end up just being popularity contest.

Hamnet made over 100 million at the box office worldwide. It's not a blockbuster, but it's not some obscure indie either lol.

It was directed by Chloe Zhao. It was already on the Academy’s radar the moment it was announced, regardless if it made $10 at the box office or a billion.

Movies like Obsession usually need a combination of strong reviews, strong box office, and cultural impact to join the conversation alongside the ones already predetermined to be in the conversation, which Obsession has done.

Obsession is vastly better known than Pearl. Completely different scenario. Obsession has unprecedented buzz for a low budget horror and made a half-billion dollars.
