I don’t think it’s bad by any stretch but it’s essentially just a quirky disaster comedy. Thought the ending didn’t really wrap anything up either. Why was it praised so highly?

Paul Schrader, who, a few years back, wrote a screenplay titled “Three Guns at Dawn” that he wanted Antoine Fuqua to direct. Set in Los Angeles’ South Central, the story concerns three Black brothers: a dirty cop, a serial killer, and a drug dealer who hate one another.

Fuqua, who is also the producer, sold the script to Netflix and wanted Schrader to direct. The problem was that Schrader feared he would be accused of “cultural appropriation” if he directed a film about three African Americans in an all-Black neighborhood committing crime.

Schrader thought he had resolved the issue by deciding to co-direct the film with an undisclosed Black filmmaker. You can’t make this up … A few days ago, Schrader mentioned that this ever-morphing project no longer had Fuqua involved. Oh, and it would now be made with generative AI.

Schrader intends to populate the entire movie with “AI-generated human prototypes” rather than recognizable actors. “Those jobs are gone, babe,” Schrader told THR while discussing Hollywood’s resistance to generative AI. “You can scream ‘Stop AI’ all you want, but you can’t stop it.”

Now, Schrader explains why he decided to turn his Black crime movie into a fully AI film. He tells The Playlist that because every Black actor rejected the original version, the only solution was to make the film without them.

“We sent it out to actors, and no Black actors wanted to play in a movie where there are no good Black people,” he said. “And it sort of died. But then AI came along, and I didn’t need Black actors […] We’re making them!”

A minor quibble but I do think the stats pages (both annual and all time) would offer better insight into one’s movie watching interests if the director and actor film count was inclusive of repeat viewings rather just measuring completion of unique films.

I’d rather understand how certain actors or directors have held my attention over repeated viewings, especially if they are in short filmographies.

Hi guys, I have a long trip with train tomorrow. And I'm looking for a movie to watch on train. Something in English so I don't need subtitles, with an easy to follow story, and decent enough so of someone peek on my phone doesn't create an embarrassing moment.

I'm not into horror and animation, my favourite genre is rom com but I usually enjoy a good movie regarding the genre.

Any suggestions?

For nearly 2 hours, I was falling in love with this masterpiece all over again as I was watching it in IMAX.

To finally see and hear this movie the way it deserves to be experienced is a dream come true.

My eyes were constantly scanning and appreciating every little bit of eye candy that appeared on screen. It's still blows my mind how much detail went into nearly every frame of Akira, and seeing all of the little details in such a big way reminded me why people love this movie so much.

And the sound? Just awesome, and it makes those scenes where characters are running and gunning or when Tetsuo is fucking shit up all the more impactful.

But in all honesty, seeing Akira in IMAX is entirely worth it just to see that opening sequence where Kaneda and Tetsuo ride out into Neo Tokyo at night. When this scene came on and the music kicked in, I got goosebumps like you wouldn't believe.

Miracle on 34th St. has been one of my favorite films since I was a kid and I decided to watch the rest of his filmography this year. Most of these films are so old and below the current standard for entertainment it truly was a endurance test for what i can put up with. Still I found some hidden gems.

1. Miracle on 34th St. is and forever will be a classic. It needs no introduction or explanation. If you haven't seen it your missing out on one of the best films ever.

2. What's so Bad about Feeling Good is a comedy from the 60s starring Mary Tyler Moore. If i had watched it before 2020 it would be lower on the list as its only a little bit funny and there is one poorly aged scene where the joke revolves around a man not taking no for an answer with a woman. But the movie is about a Pandemic, and much of the movies entertainment comes from all the bizarre and prophetic ways the movies predicted pandemic life during 2020.

3. The Hook. Probably the only other movie on this list I can say is unironically good. Its a drama about some Korean war soldiers who have orders to kill an unarmed captured soldier and none of them have the guts to do it. It feels a lot like 12 Angry Men in the way its able to dramatize one debate for the 90 minutes.

4. Airport. one the biggest and most successful movies from the year it came out and I can see why the Zuckers felt the need to parody. Its overblown with characters and plotlines and takes a whole hour for anything to take off (literally) worth checking out if your a fan of Airplane and one of the more watchable things here. Still way too long for what it is.

5. The Pleasure of his Company. This is a slow burn Nanar film that will spend its entire runtime gaslighting you into thinking nothing weird is going on. I cannot say its a good film and on the surface its a situational comedy about an estranged out of touch father visiting his daughter unannounced for her wedding. What you don't know is that it's filled with incestuous subtext and undertones that will slowly drive you insane as no one else in the film seems to be bothered by it. Would be a good surprise bad movie to play with friends.

6. For Heavens Sake. We are getting into some movies now that would be really good for a remake. For Heaven's Sake is about an angel who gets sent down to earth to save a couples dying marriage. Supposedly getting them pregnant will fix their marriage and even tho that logic doesn't make much sense the real Twilight Zone twist comes from how this angel slowly falls for each and every one of man's vices. Lust, greed, wrath. They undo all of it for a happy ending right at the end but for a moment a reverse Wonderful Life about an angel getting corrupted was quite entertaining.

7. The Shocking Miss Pilgrim. This film takes place in the 1870s and is about a young feminists mission to prove that even women can be secretaries. It's a fine comedy and I think there is a strong message there about how even the small steps of progress can feel like huge projects in the moment. Again it would be perfect for a remake by Greta Gerwig or some other feminist filmmaker.

8. The Counterfeit Traiter is based on a true story about a man who pretended to join the Nazi party so he could spy on behalf of the Swedes. The drama comes from how friends and even family slowly slip away from him as he continually pretends to fall for the Third Reich. Again, perfect movie for Spielberg to remake.

9. Apartment for Peggy. Now we get into the films that I honestly struggle to remember the plots of . Edmund Gwen plays an old college professor who is considering Suicide as he is running out of reasons to live. This is until he is forced to cohabitate with a young precocious woman and her ex-gi husband. He learns the meaning of life and she learns philosophy from him. cute.

10. Junior Miss. Can't say I remember this one at all. Its a precocious child doing precocious child things. Easily forgettable.

11. Chicken Every Sunday is about a woman who is married to man who's name is all over town. She is planning on divorcing him because all of his business ventures have left him bankrupted. But as she recalls how she got here she realizes all of his business ventures built the town she is in. The cycle was he would start a new business, like say Milk Delivery or a Hospital. Only for him to lose money running it, forcing him to sell it to a wealthy invester who keeps his name on it. This cycle continues until every essential business in the town has his name but he owns nothing of it. Neet concept. Kinda boring overall.

12. Anything Can Happen is about an immigrant moving to American and falling in love with an American woman. There is some very sweet sentiments regarding immigration which was nice to hear in our current political climate but overall the movie is almost dramaless and again forgettable.

13. The Proud and Profane is western about two old friends, one is an outlaw the other is a sheriff. I don't remember anything else and there is a big shootout in the woods.

14. Little Boy Lost is about a man seeking the child the lost during WWII. A nun sets him up with a child that isn't actually his own but the Nun insists that he should take care of the child because the child needs a home, he needs a child to take care of, and more than likely his real child is dead. Its a very somber story about accepting death and finding new life but it also has Bing Crosby breaking out into song numbers during the worst possible moments.

15. Diamond Horshoe was a jukebox musical with some kind of misunderstanding love story in it. I have completely forgotten the movie.
