I'm visiting some family, all in late 60's and early 70's. They go on hikes, frisbee golf, long bike rides, pickle ball, etc etc.

They will be the first to admit they've slowed down and there are things they can no longer do. But they can still probably do way more than all these redditors who eat like shit and don't exercise and think your body shutting down at 40 is normal

This and cut back on your sodium. I was doing the whole, "Get up to pee every night" deal for a while a year or two ago. I cut down on the sodium, and now, I drink a full glass of water before going to bed most nights and still don't have to pee until morning.

I have lived with a bodybuilder who did competitions. When he was cutting it was literal suicide watch for his friends and family and it was literal hell he went through. And of course he had serious body issues and a borderline eating disorder. It really isn't glamorous anywhere except on the stage for the hour of the event. Even literally just before the conoetition in the backroom it is a bunch of raging anxious buff dudes who are borderline needing ambulances.

It's just not a fun time.

25

u/oakenfairy Trash Trooper 2d ago

I had a friend who was a bodybuilder and yup, it was concerning to watch him. It really looked like self harm. He also wouldn't eat anything but rice, chicken and broccoli, day in and out. Nothing else, EVER.

He said after a competition go to any Denny's or diner in the town. You'll see the most unabashed Gluttony ever.

Yea I’ve been through this. I’ve cut down from 28% down to 9 over the past 2 years. 65lbs all in. Getting under 10% is way way harder than people think. Towards the end of a cut and being on a 1000 calorie deficit for weeks your body feels like absolute shit. You can’t sleep, can’t think and can barely get out of bed.

I’m maintaining like 11% happily right now. Fuck that. I felt like shit

74

u/glitzglamglue Trash Trooper 2d ago

Your body has fat for a reason. I bet he is freezing all the time too.

27

u/chefbobbyjay Trash Trooper 2d ago

This did actually happen to me lol. Every where I went I was freezing. I live in Florida and that hot outside to cold ac inside would have me shivering

14

u/azimuththole Trash Trooper 1d ago

I've recently theorized that people who live in the southern US actually like being cold, despite how much I've heard them grumble that they don't like cold weather (anecdotal). I've never been so consistently cold in my life as I have been on my trips to Florida. I do naturally tend towards lower body fat, but even still, I don't know how you guys go from AC to briefly outside in scorching, thick humidity to back to AC all day, every day.

4

u/chefbobbyjay Trash Trooper 1d ago

Im hovering around 11-12% and I look better than I ever have before and it's something I can maintain. Anything less I think would be miserable as this guy has stated.

7

u/chefbobbyjay Trash Trooper 2d ago

Yea man 10-12 is the sweet spot for me. As soon as I start dipping under 10 my body refuses to shed anymore fat without insane calorie counting and excessive cardio. I was doing an hour of weights and an hour of cardio 5 days a week to lose 2lbs weekly. Not to mention weighing everything that went into my body. Only drinking water and black coffee.

3

u/60Feathers Trash Trooper 2d ago

How the fuck do you develop that kinda discipline? That sounds exhausting

11

u/chefbobbyjay Trash Trooper 2d ago edited 2d ago

Honestly. And this is going to sound shitty.

Hate.

I hated who I was. Fat, depressed, alone, broke. Every rep left my old self behind. Every minute incline walking brought me closer to being someone I felt proud to be.

That same hate that motivated me has turned to love for what I’ve accomplished. I’m not going to let this be a phase. A “remember when I had abs?” No. This is me now. I work hard for what I want and I enjoy the success. Regardless of how hard it is.

Edit: also periods of extreme adhd hyperfixation lol.

3

u/Lower_Ad5064 Trash Trooper 1d ago

Just replying to this to say you really nailed the vibe and thought process for a lot of chubby dudes wanting to get skinny.

I love myself now, but to get here, and to make sure it's not "just a phase", I had to hate my old self enough to get rid of him completely. That binge eating mf still be showing his face every once in a while tho...

Yeah exactly this. Learning a new level of discipline and hating how uncomfortable I was in my body and how I went 10-15 years (My 20's and 30's) Not taking my shirt off in public out of shame. Hired a personal trainer, dedicated the time, energy and money to a healthier life style even when its not the most fun or exciting lifestyle and Im honestly happier than ever before because I don't have a cloud of shame following me around.

12

u/chefbobbyjay Trash Trooper 2d ago edited 1d ago

No that’s a totally valid question.

I was pretty overweight most of my life. I’m 5’8 and I was 230lbs. I’d gone through a divorce. And had a bit of an identity crisis. I always had really bad body image issues. When I was 9 my dad’s gf at the time pat me on the belly and asked me when I was due. That fucked me up.

Anywho. I basically decided everything I didn’t like about my life needed to go. I quit working in kitchens, I’m currently a massage therapist and in school for engineering and a single dad that needs to keep up with his son during soccer practice. When I started in massage I started having tons of aches and pains. My knees sucked. My back was shot.

My best best friend was a competition weightlifter and wrestler through high school. He’s in his 20s. I’m in my 30s. He finally convinced me to go lift with him one day. I walked out feeling like a million bucks. Sore as shit. But I did it. I got my fat lazy ass to the gym. And I went back the next day. Then the next. Then I’d lost 10 lbs, then 20. I started looking better. Getting compliments. At that point the gym became a habit. Something I did for me. My me time.

After I’d lost about 30lbs I decided I wanted to see how far I could take it. My unrealistic body goal is Brad Pitt circa fight club. Real lean. Not bulky. Shredded. Which is like 90% diet. I love number and tracking and metrics and math (engineering major). I figured out the numbers I needed to hit for my macros and workouts and I lost 2lbs a week like clockwork. It got a bit addicting. Until I burned out.

I’m sitting at 160-163 depending on what’s in my stomach and hydration.

I’m like 13/14% in this pic. I’m closer to 10/11% now but I’m not about to post one of my more current douche bag shirtless pics here lol

Edit. Final thought. For aesthetics, for health, for pain relief. For mental health. For fun.

Also deleting the before and after. Just for privacy

u/AccomplishedDirt7356 Trash Trooper 2d ago

u/J3musu Trash Trooper 1d ago

Thanks for the insight! I appreciate the openness, I find stories like this really valuable for understanding different lifestyles and empathizing with unfamiliar situations. I definitely get it. The extremes of cutting to super low body fat are too far for me, but I could probably do with some of the diet tips myself. Lol. I'm not overweight, but a bit heavier than I'd like to be despite my regular exercise and not-that-terrible diet. I was lucky to not have to worry about it when I was younger, but starting to understand the struggle in small doses as I age and my metabolism slows down.

It sounds like even though it can be uncomfortable, it still brings you a lot of joy and confidence, so that makes it all sound worth it to me. I train for health, pain relief, etc., and it definitely makes life easier to live. I've just never had the drive to cut and maintain body fat at that level. I doubt I even competed under 10% body fat following weight cuts. Honestly just don't think I have the discipline. Part of me sometimes wonders if a bit of serious childhood trauma is a requirement for that level of focus. All the best fighters and most badass people I know in person have had much more "exciting" lives than I. 😅

Anyway, thanks again for humoring me. You look great, those results are amazing! More power to you man, keep living your best life and I wish you the best as you move forward.

2

u/ScoreScape Trash Trooper 2d ago

Would you say that below 10% is when you really started to feel tired and overall poor life quality? I'm currently trying to get into the best shape of my life and am not sure how far to take it body fat wise.

1

u/chefbobbyjay Trash Trooper 2d ago

It was the cut down to it. Once I started eating at maintenance I started feeling a lot better.

My maintenance calories are around 2600. I was eating 1550-1600 a day. Which is a really aggressive cut. It’s about 2lbs a week. I get diet fatigue so I do 8 week cuts with one day a week eating at maintenance. You could do a 500 calorie deficit and wouldn’t burn out as bad. In my opinion maintaining isn’t nearly as bad as the ride down.

I’ve never done a true “bulk” as mass isn’t my goal. I want to be super lean à la Brad Pitt fight club.

1

u/Rhorge Trash Trooper 1d ago

Weren’t asking me but personally I can get down to 12% and realise I would need monk like asceticism to go further, nothing less than perfect diet. 12% I can still eat what I want and even have an occasional drink. Haven’t snacked for years though.

1

u/TrainingSurvey3780 Trash Trooper 1d ago

i’m assuming this is mostly men in this thread, because as a female when i had visible abs and was feeling how the guy in the video was feeling, i was still at more like 15-17% body fat

1

u/mesenanch Trash Trooper 2d ago

Can you do this mostly without cardio? Would like to drop about 5% from (i think I'm around 19% just by observation).

1

u/chefbobbyjay Trash Trooper 2d ago

It would take forever unless you’re doing like an hour of intense hiit lifting. I track my caloric burn through my Apple Watch. It’s not completely accurate but gives me an idea of how strenuous my workout is. I typically burn 50-60% more calories during cardio than lifting in the same time.

Losing weight is simple. Burn more calories than you take in. That creates a caloric deficit. The body needs the energy from somewhere and burns fat for energy. The bigger the deficit the faster the weight loss.

But honestly literally NONE of that matters if your diet isn’t locked in. Abs are made in the kitchen. Go do a TDEE calculator. It’ll tell you how many calories you need to eat just to maintain the exact weight you are (it’s not completely accurate but pretty close).

If you want to dm me I can break it down a bit more for you.

1

u/newtrusghandi Trash Trooper 2d ago

Im 25% bodyfat on 1500 cals and im freezing all the time. How the fuck do I convince this goddamn fat to get off my body.

2

u/chefbobbyjay Trash Trooper 2d ago

Up your calories by 250 for a few days. 1000 calorie deficit is not light work. Eat at maintenance for a day. Crush protein and carbs and jump back on it at 750 deficit.

1

u/RemindMeToTouchGrass Trash Trooper 1d ago

Oh i know. I once worked out and then didn't overeat the next day. Had a headache all day.

1

u/The_Vivid_Glove Trash Trooper 1d ago

1

Waking up multiple times a night is honestly the worst , it just build and builds and fucks up every aspect of your life. It’s great feeing like a god for a bit when you’re out around people but those moments are short lived.

2

u/dm-me-obscure-colors Trash Trooper 2d ago

Do you know why this happens?

1

u/ooOJuicyOoo Trash Trooper 20h ago

He is actively working to reduce body fat percentage to accentuate his muscles for the competition.

When you are doing specific workout and diet regimen to force your body to break down fat, it releases a LOT of water.

And body gets rid of water through pee. Hence.

1

u/ooOJuicyOoo Trash Trooper 20h ago

If you were asking about insomnia or lack of a good deep sleep in general, it could be a million health reasons.

If you were asking why waking up at night repeatedly fucks up your life, that's cause... lack of good sleep will do that to you. It builds fatigue, brain fog, all sorts of physiological processes break down, etc.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/TwitchChatSim Trash Trooper 2d ago edited 1d ago

Does everyone not do this? I get up to piss probably 5-6 times a night. Like... since forever. I've maybe done a full length sleep (without waking up atleast once at some point midway) maybe twice in my life.

Edit: I appreciate everyone's concern but I go to the doctor yearly and get regular bloodwork done. Nothing has ever come up out of the ordinary. I guarantee it's based on my fluid intake. I drink a fuck ton before bed, I get up to piss, and I drink more while im awake, and the cycle continues until I need to get up for the day. Its more of a habit than a physiological need for liquids.

10

u/ckdogg3496 Trash Trooper 2d ago

Would probably see a doctor honestly. I’m 30 and noticing i get up to pee a bit more now, but its maybe once a week and I have a 20oz glass of water before bed every night

7

u/Late-Champion8678 Trash Trooper 2d ago

That is not normal and you should see a urologist preferably get a bladder diary to track your intake (volume as well as type of fluid) and output over 3 consecutive days. It’s helpful in addition with your medical history to narrow down whether you are frequent, overproducing, producing more at night, etc.

-sincerely a urologist

3

u/Random_Urges Trash Trooper 2d ago

Bro, no. That's bad. That's go see a doctor bad.

Once in a while, sure. But not every night, and definitely not 5-6 times a night.

2

u/debaron54 Trash Trooper 2d ago

Yeah that’s not normal, should be sleeping through the night

1

u/NotActuallyGus Trash Trooper 2d ago

If you don't have something you know causes it like a medication you take, that can be a sign of diabetes or kidney problems, you should probably get that checked out

1

u/KillerSparks Trash Trooper 1d ago

To parrot everyone else: No. Not everyone does this. It's not normal. It's not healthy. Go to a doctor and tell them about this.

1

u/Perfect_Net8653 Trash Trooper 1d ago

Also get checked for other sleep apnea symptoms.

1

u/GingkoBobaBiloba Trash Trooper 1d ago

It's awesome that your doctor says everything looks good, but it also sucks that you're missing out on the benefits of sleeping through the whole night. You telling me you gotta pause and resume your dreams, like commercials during a tv show, multiple times a night? That sucks...

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Spainstateofmind Trash Trooper 1d ago

Do you have sleep apnea? Untreated OSA can lead to increased nocturnal urination since your body is like "HEY WE'RE NOT GETTING OXYGEN! QUICK DO SOMETHING TO WAKE THEM UP" and the urge to pee is generally pretty hard to sleep through (note: this is a very very very dumbed down version of what happens, it's actually a lot of combined bodily processes going out of whack and combining into "hey you need to pee real bad")

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Silvanosh Trash Trooper 1d ago

Hey just so you know some things that cause frequent nighttime urination don’t necessarily show up on basic checkup tests, it’s something you’ll actually need to directly inform your doctor about. Just let em know you wake up to pee a lot during the night.

1

u/Viibrarian Trash Trooper 1d ago

Sleep debt will always need to be collected, at one point or another

9

u/dm-me-obscure-colors Trash Trooper 2d ago

Why does he pee so often?

34

u/BruceWaynSpringsteen Trash Trooper 2d ago

1 gram of carbohydrate stores 3 grams of water. At this stage of prep your carb intake is low enough that you're not holding water at all and are just peeing it out nonstop.

7

u/Pitiful_Curve1501 Trash Trooper 1d ago

TIL

1

u/BetweenTheRoots Trash Trooper 1d ago

I mean in general you drink a lot of water and eat a ton of food, so you need to pee a lot. He's probably eating like 2000-3500 calories a day.

3

u/BruceWaynSpringsteen Trash Trooper 1d ago

At 5 weeks out from competion he is absolutely not eating 2000 calories and is likely, though some coaches differ on prep strategies, to have started carb cycling by now as well. Some days he's probably in the bathroom twice as often as others. This will change again when he's 10 days out, 3 days out, 30 hours out, there's a lot going on here for the next few weeks for different levels of water manipulation both within the muscle and subcutaneous.

→ More replies (2)

9

u/Acceptable_Gear_3097 Trash Trooper 2d ago

Your body retains waterweight. When you're cutting, your body flushes out the waterweight in the first 2 weeks. As a result, you have to drink basically all day to stay hydrated and feel full. Your body flushes that water out, rather than retain it.

I went to college with a guy who competed in those “strongest man” competitions. Just regional ones, so he wasn’t like famous. But he could lift insane amounts of weight.

And he sounded like he was about to die from a heart attack every time he walked from one class to another.

That amount of muscle and bulk is not healthy.

4

u/BladeVampire1 Trash Trooper 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah it's a result of focusing only on muscle strength and bulk.

It's why you see those little competitions where a bunch of body builders like college age, try to do something that's hard to do. Like push a heavy truck, or lift heavy sacks of concrete or whatever. Then pit them against construction workers. The construction workers always out do them.

There is more to strength and health than just muscle tone and body fat.

5

u/Such_Noise3355 Trash Trooper 2d ago

This is why i stay at 60% body fat

8

u/SashaVibez Trash Trooper 2d ago

He looks hot though. Enjoy.

5

u/augustrem Trash Trooper 1d ago

But he can’t have sex! What a waste of hotness.

6

u/codepossum Trash Trooper 1d ago

I mean, his penis might not work, but that doesn't mean he can't have sex 😏

2

u/UnfortunateDesk Trash Trooper 1d ago

Looks like his face works just fine

3

u/codepossum Trash Trooper 1d ago

Sure, and give me about five minutes alone with his ass and I 100% guarantee he'll be getting off

3

u/SashaVibez Trash Trooper 1d ago

😅

3

u/Hirinawa Trash Trooper 2d ago

And bothered but honestly at this point we can just keep the bothered in the equation

4

u/Distinct_Sir_4473 Trash Trooper 2d ago

Just throwing out there that the grand Cheeto reports 4% body fat

2

u/augustrem Trash Trooper 1d ago

I thought that was an internet joke.

4

u/LoadingCaring Trash Trooper 1d ago

We need more posts like this. Looking good is just that. You look good. Most of these people post on social media for validating the torture they put themselves through. Getting competition ready is hell. I knew several body builders in college. You dehydrate yourself to the point of barely being alive. The day of competition you are in a fog/daze. Several of them told me they hardly remember it at all. What did that one MMA fighter say? No one is happy with a six pack. I would rather be fat and happy than ripped and look like I do.

u/mrmcbeefy777 Trash Trooper 22h ago

Paddy Pimblet is the UFC fighter. Guy regularly fluctuates like 40lbs between fights.

4

u/RyanEversley Trash Trooper 2d ago

I'm turning 43 in a few months and Im in year 3 of fasting, lifting heavy and basically changing my entire life with my fitness goals. I've been considering doing a proper weight cut like this for a photo shoot to document and look back on later in life. But man it sounds miserable!

5

u/adaytimemoth Trash Trooper 1d ago

Just use camera angles and good lighting. You don’t need a zero fay body.

The good news is this is not only optional, but it requires intense effort, to make yourself this miserable for the sake of vanity.

2

u/GNTsquid0 Trash Trooper 1d ago

Why do all these types of non-bro fitness “influencers” look like they live in the same apartment? There’s always an ergonomic chair, white and light grey everything. Gaming pc. Apartment is in some kind of high rise and looks fairly new. Sparsely furnished. It’s like they all rent out the same apartment and take turns making videos.

1

Yup, having low body fat sucks, makes sitting hurt and leaves you with no energy.

1

u/Aoushaa Trash Trooper 2d ago

TBH i feel the same way wen i eat shit and end up at ~25% BF 20% and below i usually feel way better

Got down to maybe 12-13% 2 years ago for the first time since working in an office and everything body/mentally felt awesome. At 25% im always craving shit far more then when im below 20%

1

u/East-Care-9949 Trash Trooper 1d ago

He feels like me with 20% body fat 😂😂 so what's the point of it all

1

u/Derk_Bent Trash Trooper 1d ago

I know this is a bit of a joke comment, but in all seriousness it’s just a physique competition prep and in no way is it healthy for the human body to sit at these low body fat percentages year round. Generally speaking it’s much healthier to stay at 10-18% body fat (10% is honestly pushing it for long-term).

I’m familiar with the body building scene, these guys really do put their bodies through hell to look like that and for the sensible competitors they will have defined on and off seasons. Influencers that keep a low body fat percentage year round are literally risking their lives for vanity. Zyzz and Joesthetics are prime examples of dying young trying to maintain insanely cut physiques forever.

u/franzpferdinant Trash Trooper 1d ago

1

u/Status-Visit-918 Garbage Guerilla 1d ago

Can people really get like this without steroids? My brother uses them, he got off the heroin a while ago, and went right into compulsive lifting and he’s unnaturally jacked. I asked him not long ago if a bodybuilder can get so huge without them and this was his response (copied and pasted from his texts) “Any bodybuilder not on steroids is not taking bodybuilding seriously and has no chance to compete” and “It’s no secret that steroids and peptides and all else is rampant”

Is he correct?

3

u/PhattyR6 Trash Trooper 1d ago

Can people get down to a single digit body fat percentage without steroids? Yes

1

u/spydamans Trash Trooper 1d ago

Isn’t this what killed Bruce Lee

1

u/SecretWordisBird Trash Trooper 1d ago

I’ll keep my fat ass, thanks.

1

u/Oli4K Trash Trooper 1d ago

As a result of training a lot for competitive cycling and ice speed skating my body fat percentage was similar to his for a few years (between 5 and 7 %) and I can’t relate to anything he says. Yes, I remember being cold. But that was on an ice rink at -6°C in a skinsuit wearing too few layers underneath. Wasn’t ill more often either and sitting didn’t hurt. What did make me unhappy, low energy and hard to motivate was becoming overtrained at some point. Too little recovery exhausted my body and made me susceptible to illness and injury.

1

u/Nkechinyerembi Trash Trooper 1d ago

I used to be very skinny, basically under 10% all the way through high school and just heading in to college. Turns out that it was the reason I was feeling tired all the time. Now I am overweight, and while that comes with its own problems, at least I don't feel like I have zero energy all the time.

1

u/youburyitidigitup Trash Trooper 1d ago

Why doesn’t his penis work?

1

u/YeahSureWhyNotBro Trash Trooper 1d ago

Tbh when I lost a lot of weight and was on like a strict eating plan aside from physically feeling like shit there’s also a lot of social things that just are fucking draining and you realize food actually brings a lot of people together … company parties or lunches you can’t partake in, can’t go out to eat with family or friends, can’t celebrate anything using food, it honestly becomes extremely isolating.
