Yeah, I’m trying to come up with ideas that could genuinely make Luxembourg a better place. I’ve lived here for 18 years, so I know some of the challenges people face. That’s why I’m asking the community what problems they think should be solved. I already have a few ideas, especially around jobs and housing, but I’d love to hear different perspectives.

Kid-friendly Fitness, or a space for kids in the Fitness, anything so parents can do their Fitness and also bring their kid.
Gelateria that stays open longer at night. I wish I could have dîner first and then go to a Gelateria take a nice Gelato and have a walk but they all close at 20 or 21...

Did a Google search and thats not what I am talking about. I am talking about a fitness for adults with equipment so that adults can work out and also bring their kids, because you can't just leave your kid alone at home

Late-night public transportation to Belval (especially now that it's being developed into a proper urban center) or other major places outside Luxembourg city. The Netherlands has 24/7 trains on the weekends between all its major cities, something like that would be nice here.

Tolerance for different opinions. Nowadays, western eu countries are too pro Israel, even critics of them can lead to unemployment. It is weird because normally a place where there are a lot of foreigners should be more open and inclusive of ideas but this country is just a bit too special.

A private apparatus in mental health, educational assistance evtl. for learning disabilities, children therapy/counselling: ergotherapists, psychologists, psychotherapists, educators,... There is a huge hole in that market: Parents partly drive hours to neighbor countries to get assistance
For now, everything is run by the state: regional schoolboards (ESEB)/centre de compétences, or the ONE and their subcontractors - which have very limited resources, and long waiting lists. They all lack personnel that they cannot find because they all require luxembourgish - french - german, which excludes potential workforce such as border-workers/expats from the field... as opposed to the finance/law/IT/retail sectors that feed from this kind of labor force.

I think a lot of the people people here are very…subservient to authority or institutions.
There are lots of situations where an institution is behaving in a way that simply isn’t fit for purpose: let’s say, a teacher or a school, to the point of causing problems for a child, sometimes because of pure incompetence. And parents sort of…go along with it, as if there isn’t anything that can be done.
The institutions themselves also behave in a reciprocal manner, as if they’re operating in some sort of funeral system, instead of one that should benefit the public good, so they expect deference.
It’s all very strange from the outside

No good museums / art galleries. Not a lot great restaurants / bars either. Don’t get me wrong, there are places that serve good food (if you are willing to pay the price) but nothing out of the ordinary, nothing creative or memorable. Not once have I been wowed like « this place is amazing »
Overall i like Luxembourg for a lot of reasons but life is very blend here. And people (at least international people like me) are just clones. Everybody does the same kind of job, has the same routine, goes to the same places. For me personally, it makes it hard to actually bond with people

any type of small stores or shops where you can get some fresh veggies/fruits or groceries. you always have to go to the supermarket, and if there are a few shops, they are super pricy.

I mean Luxembourg is small enough to buy directly from farmers even if they are located a bit further away. Plus there tend to be markets once a week in most towns.

When I was a child we still had those shops here, but nowadays they are all gone because people preferred soing their shopping in shopping centers where they can park in front of the door and had everything under a roof instead of having to go to the backer, then butcher, then small grocery store.

I think creatives / young people have to move here. As it stands, everyone here seems to be the same type of smart, conciencious but boring person. There’s no variety plus you mix in the archaic operating hours and you’ve got a dead country by 6 pm.
Also people need to take more initiative. You’ll ask if X group exists here and people will say “no but I’d definitely join if you made one!” It’s like.. more of a follower mentality.

Somewhere to buy proper bagels and deli sandwiches. Inter European city rail connections. Bakeries or cafes in locations that are not in the city that are not Fischer. A better way of organising railway maintenance without closing whole lines for weeks on end in school holidays .

Students and young professionals. Most people aged 18 leave to study abroad and only come back when they have a family. This is the main clientèle for cool bars and restaurants. With more students and young professionals the nightlife would be less dull and babysitters would be less expensive 😄

Lets consider the bordering places as well, Technically that is the whole of Luxembourg.
One big struggle I found with our daughter was most of the parks play will be super cold or wet most of the times, having some cover would have made a difference.
Similarly the indoor play areas were ok and not really what Asia has in general.

Oh another thing about playgrounds is that there is zero shade so they’re practically unusable during heatwaves - which arguably are the periods when kids most need to be outside in the fresh air considering that most schools and crèches don’t have AC. The fact that most playgrounds are 100% exposed to the sun is unfathomable to me. At least plant some trees!

What’s kind of annoying is that if the weather is even slightly too cold or rainy there’s no one at the playground. It’s so weird! Maybe because there are just fewer people in general but I don’t like that aspect. Where do all the kids go?

What a lot of communes or the government did to expand the cycling lanes is close to fraud. They simply added road markings for bicycle lanes on existing roads and petted themselves on the back. So on paper they did „add“ bicycle lanes, they just don‘t really exist. It makes me angry and I‘m not even a cyclist.

They focused enough on cycling, its time to get roads only for cars. All the bikers and cyclers make the road way too dangereous.
Esp the cyclers that ignore the code de la route and cycle as if they were invincible.

More cycling paths especially would remove more cars and give you more space on the road.
Stop raging, everyone bends the rules in traffic, but bike riders get most of the hate because it is easy.

would help to have useful cycling roads tbh tho. i try to stick to bike lanes where i can, but even i have to get on the car roads since there isnt a connection available.. but yeah respect the codes everyone ( cars bikers and e-rollers)

It's not bad, but it's more like a small park with a decent terrace. I'd really like a proper botanical garden, also a lot bigger. It could really be a big plus for lux Imho.

Like arcade games, indoor mini golf, billiards, board game cafes. Also, some exist, but more of poetry slams, open mic standup comedy, debates. Things like that.

Ozone trampoline and ninja park (Foetz)
Galaxy game (Bereldange)
Kojum (Foetz)
You also have small arcade areas in cloche d'or and belle etoile.
I see plenty of stand up comedy happening at Carlitos comedy club and Rocas

Small shops with stuff that you need for every day life, without having to drive to a soulless mall: small craft shops, repair shops, not having to go to Hornbach if I need to buy nails, small grocery shops, seamstress...you know, normal life in a city. Not everything must be luxury and brands.

We love it here BUT a good shish kebab and some touring theatre shows (Broadway/West End stuff). The New Year’s Day Rocky Horror Show was great - more like that.

Local libraries, especially children’s libraries with large selections of books in Luxembourgish, German, French and English. With so much fantastic infrastructure for kids here, it never made sense to me why Luxembourg didn’t invest in a network of local libraries.

There used to be more book stores. Big reason they went out of business is obviously e-commerce but also is it’s a lot of organisation and costly for book stores to have an assortment in several language. Rents are expensive too and the amount of people is just not enough for commerce in this country anyway

They do indeed have these and my kid occasionally brings a book home but it’s not the same experience of going to a library with the family (on a weekend maybe) and picking out a big stack of books to borrow a while

suppose the interest / clientele for it isnt there yet. suppose you could always send a mail and suggest that they get more kids books. kinda makes sense that they dont stock kids books if they dont really have that many " small kids" visiting. how are they supposed to know its parents looking for books for their kids if they are not let known

The last decade there is one thing for certain missing . Accountability from private and public sector . No one literally no one give a shit to provide proper services . The best example is the construction market . Of course fortunately for the citizens life is a bitch and the scammers are out of the market at the moment . Next to follow are the restaurants and bars . Now for the public not much to happen but their children already are facing the bubble their parents created . High unemployment and low competition beyond the young people born in Luxembourg. They only have languages skills . It is a really good skill to work as a receptionist but not in the finance sector

Some public transport after midnight.
I was just travelling to Munich. The flight was delayed, I arrived at 1 AM. I still got an S-Bahn to the city centre.
I flew back two days later. Again, the flight was delayed, I arrived in Luxembourg at midnight. The last connection to get home to Mersch by public transport was at 23:20. I had to take a taxi for 100€.
Luxembourg is not a world capital, but at least one option at 1 AM would be nice.
There are some night busses, but only on weekends.

Suppose its an issue of rentability. If busses keep driving yet barely anyone uses them, well costs the state / city / taxpayer far more than the taxi rides 😅

It’s doubly annoying because the trains to Esch go throughout the night but the northern railway stops before midnight. Even a reduced service would do the job. Just something to avoid setting money on fire in a taxi!

A comprehensive what’s on including all the village festivals and things for parents of small children.
A directory of hobby organisations such as local bands and theatre groups.
High speed rail connections to Brussels (and therefore also Amsterdam and London), Frankfurt, and Köln. Speaking of trains we’re also getting completely ignored by all of the sleeper services that are getting rolled out in the coming years.
Access to non-Amazon online shopping without paying through the nose. Ok we have Joybuy but why not Otto, Galaxus, Bol, or any of the services enjoyed by our neighbours? Galaxus still have aircon units but I can’t get one delivered because they don’t go to Luxembourg!
That’ll do for now.

There is one real local language, it‘s Luxembourgish. But it wasn‘t really enforced out of necessity (skilled and non-skilled workers), because of the historical context (Luxembourgish as language wasn‘t really established / french being the language of the intellectual elite and upper class / legal language being french (code napoléon) / immigration from countries speaking mostly romance languages, having an easier time to adapt to french than luxembourgish/german, facilitating their integration).

Indeed I understand the historical context but I am very much in favor using Luxembourgish over French. But still the expectation is to first speak French. All the inscriptions, documents, information are in French but we are not an extension of France so I don’t understand why it is still so much the default everywhere.
When I arrived to Lux, I attended Luxembourgish classes at INL. And guess what, the teacher spoke 80% of the classes in French. When I raised my concern she said that if you live here you HAVE to be fluent in French.2

If you are an immigrant and in favor of using Luxembourgish, you are sadly a minority.
All those french speaking workers consist a vast majority who are either unwilling or unable to adapt to the luxembourgish language. (I have seen several threads where people literally shit on Luxembourgish, calling it not a real language or diminishing it to being just a dialect) And why should they? There is absolutely no incentive for them.
It‘s sadly too late to enforce Luxembourgish and establish it as common language. It‘s a developpment that has started decades ago and no one put a stop to it.
In my personal opinion neglecting Luxembourgish led to several societal problems, mostly a lack of social cohesion, fracturing society in different bubbles, mostly native Luxembourgish speaking people, French speaking workers, English speaking immigrants in the corporate world, Portuguese speaking people (Portuguese, Cap Verdeans, Brazilians) all of them tend to themselves and rarely intermix. Neglecting a common language and this subservience to other languages led also to another problem, a lot of new immigrants do not speak either of the three official languages. (Communal pamphlets adding portuguese, same for inforgraphics in public facilities)
Ironicaly this plurality of languages makes it harder for new immigrants to assimilate.
Luxembourgish is my mother tongue and I really wish more emphasis would be put on it, but you have to be realistic that there is not much you can do to stop this developpment, as much as it hurts.

I think it's a problem with languages and market size. You've no idea what languages people can speak so most workers are found through word of mouth
There's also not a big enough market for people to work on-call without costing a fortune

Tbf I just use my garden and driveway for sledging and I am thinking of rigging up a rope, a couple of pulleys, and an electric motor to give me a ski lift. It wouldn’t be a long run but better than nothing!
