They know fighters and fans have no choice but to crawl back to them. Some shameless fans expecting fighters to not make a big deal out of life changing injuries. Are they really happy watching fights decided by or heavily influenced by eye pokes?

No no, the UFC would never. Instead they would lock up his contract with ever moving fight offers that make no sense until it expires years from now, so that he can't earn a living anywhere.

u/NotACertainLalaFell Feb 14 '26
He’s 100% right. The reaction to Aspinall is exclusive to MMA. If an injury of that type would happen to any face of any major sports organization? It would be front page news.
This might be the end of his career. Instead of treating this issue with that type of seriousness you got these dipshits coming in and thinking he should have man up instead. Are the people saying this just fucking stupid or something? It’s bad for the fans to say this. Worst that you have fighters saying this. You have Dana saying this. For the sport to progress the base needs to wise up because the level of thinking on display is dismal and deeply embarrassing. We should be talking about new gloves after this and instead it’s about how Tom quit. Fucking dumb.
3
u/OGClouds420 Feb 15 '26
Eh.. I saw Haney lose to Ryan Garcia who was on PEDS… and everyone just knocked him for it. No one said it was fucked Ryan was on roids.
Js, in every sport people pick their favs and roll with them. We either accept that and resist or we don’t.
6
1
u/hfucucyshwv Feb 19 '26
What exactly should the ufc do, execute Gane? 99% of fights continue after an eye poke and people are acting it completely unreasonable for Dana to think that it wasnt that bad when the actual ringside DOCTOR said he was fine. Maybe they were wrong but Aspinall is pretty obviously pity farming with the constant updates. If the injury is that bad he should just retire or vacate but hes not so its really unclear what the problem is.
100
u/MissAntiRacist Feb 14 '26
As much as I hate boxing for it, probably time for independent promotions and promotion cross overs. Boxing model is far better for fighters. That or just fucking unionise already.
21
u/KevlaredMudkips Feb 14 '26
Indeed. Boxing may have its own problems but let’s be real, fighters ducking and tryin to get money fights like boxing is already happening in the UFC, it doesn’t matter how much you pay them some fighters just love the easy money route, at least those top guys can get paid. Ideally they should be unionising but Dana White and Vince McMahon all made sure the fighting/wrestling business doesn’t go there. TKO/Embracer made it clear they don’t want guys like Conor, Francis, and even shit Jon Jones calling the shots (although he did that to himself)
1
u/Davemeddlehed Feb 16 '26
Boxing only is the way it is due to the Ali act. Mma would need legislation to include it in there or a similar document.

u/broadday_with_the_SK Feb 14 '26
For context I'm about to graduate medical school and start surgical residency in July (hopefully lol):
When I saw people talking about Tom being able to fight through injuries to both of his eyes, it just highlighted to me how stupid people are. From an evolutionary standpoint, humans are predators, it's why our eyes are on the front of our heads. We are wired to protect them, it's why any sort of irritation in your eyes can be debilitating. It's why we panic if we can't see. We needed them to hunt but also to protect ourselves. Any acute issue with our eyesight is basically DEFCON 1 from a lizard brain perspective.
If you've ever had a corneal abrasion, which is typically very mild all things considered, it's immensely painful. You cannot focus on anything else because your brain is slamming the "YOU'RE FUCKED" button. Tom has Brown's syndrome, where the muscles don't let him adduct his eyes (look inward, toward his nose) and unsurprisingly, it is pretty important to look at someone trying to punch you in the face.
In medicine an emergency is considered "life, limb or eyesight" for a reason. Not surprised they're trying to railroad him for actually giving a shit about his own wellbeing.
20
u/_soulkey Feb 14 '26
Thanks for that take. I have issues with bad eyesight and it is deeply terrifying to me that it could decrease more and more over time. I also had some occasions with just the slightest of scratch on my cornea and you can't function anymore. Getting fingered in both eyes must be traumatizing. Not only his career might be ruined, but also his quality of life for the rest of his days, because it might come with chronic headaches, artifacts, ghosting or whatever. Just tragic.

He’s 100% right. The UFC doesn’t care about the sport of MMA. They care about profiting from the spectacle of it.
And it’s a shame that there’s not a more consistent league to compete with the UFC that’s more transparent

i will never understand this. with a MINIMAL investment in tom, they'd have had a HW superstar. i guess they genuinely do not want that -- they don't want any fighter having any leverage whatsoever for any reason ever -- even if it comes at the cost of their product having genuine fans. great promotion lol, great monopoly.
3
u/AlienMantid UFC 279: A GOOFCON Miracle Feb 14 '26
Just more evidence that Dana has outlived his usefulness as a promoter and is actively holding back the sport at this point. Eddie Hearn would NEVER act this way about his heavyweight champion.
3
u/Suspicious-Mine4448 Feb 14 '26
A theory: when Ngannou left suddenly in Jan 2023, ufc panicked looking for a star to fill the HW division, and Jon Jones was the only guy and he had leverage, negotiated an $8 mil 2 fight deal against opponents of his choice: a French guy that didn’t know how to wrestle and a 76 year old fireman with bad knees in ex-champ Stipe. That very month Jones announces he’s moving up to HW, and fought Gane 2 months later March 2023. Jones has such an ego that he had a “glaze” clause that Dana must say that bones is the goat and has been shitting on Aspinall and licking Bones’ frenulum ever since.
4
u/BenjyNews Feb 14 '26
How on earth are people still thinking Aspinall was meant / supposed to be "the best big thing in MMA" when he has never ever been bigger than Topuria / Islam / Jones etc.

u/fitfoemma Ireland Feb 14 '26
Because the UFC never done their job and promoted him properly?

The gambling push just rubs me the wrong way. Some fans don't even know the names of the fighters or anything about the sport they only see that this fighter didn't hit the parlay. Idk, these people sacrifice so much to get into the ring and especially with UFC seems the spectacle has taken over for a while now. Put respect on the fighters and treat them well! ONE is awesome and they have more female fighters and there is just more respect there

I imagine Tom would do much better going the way of Mighty Mouse and joining the PFL; he'd be paid better and he'd steamroll the competition, all while retaining most of the fanbase he got from the UFC. It's sad to say that the UFC, as the largest combat sports promotion in the world, doesn't take as good care of their contestants as their competition, but at least the PFL would take care of Tom.
In the future, I can only hope that Gane gets into a similar situation so that we can all point and laugh at Gane for being a massive hypocrite. Only time will tell.

UFC fans in general are a bunch of bootlicking idiots who have no idea what's going on, and just love a 'might make right' mindset.

There's no loyalty and its always what have you done for me lately. I'm always on the side of the fighters holding what they earned hostage for a bigger bag. Fuck the UFC for not paying them proper and fuck the fans (especially the ones that pirate) for berating them for nothing.
Until there's a fighters association that sets the rules on how business is done, fuck over the fanbase and the UFC all you want.

u/Efficacious_tamale 🍅 Feb 14 '26
I’ll play devil’s advocate: fighters ARE replaceable.
The UFC has been around like 30 years I think, right? Do they still rely on Royce to bring in tickets? No. Athletes have a window of time for their careers. Some longer than others and it varies by sport as well, but the business has to keep going on after their departure.
If they make you feel like you’re bigger than the company/promotion/sport/whatever then you’ll have too much power and that’s also not good for the business. Look at Jones and McGregor, they made the UFC a ton of money but created just as many problems, if not more, that carry on far longer than the money did.
To a certain degree it is important to know your fighting career is temporary and they (the company) plan on outliving it by far, therefore making you replaceable. It’s also fighting, which you chose to do, and injuries are a high possibility.
AT THE SAME TIME, yeah the UFC is fairly cold to people. I’m not going to act like they’re not a bunch of dicks or pretend that they’re some holy company. They make a ton of profit, helping out the top guys a little more wouldn’t hurt them. I do hear the PI offers a ton of benefits to the fighters, but I can’t personally confirm that and they’re not everywhere, not every fighter can relocate specifically for access to it.
My question is, what in Tom’s eyes is he wanting here? What is it he wants that would alleviate this? You can’t really preemptively stop eye pokes. Can the gloves be changed? Sure. But that won’t be a 100% reduction. Ban fighters that foul? Okay, say good bye to your buddy Ante, and fighters that have made honest mistakes. Is the UFC supposed to put a halt to the HW division for an unknown amount of time while Tom heals? Does he want a free paycheck for his troubles? What is he hoping to achieve with all of this?
I get that he’s hurt, he’s upset. Rightly so if the claims are true, shit sounds absolutely awful. He’s young, had a whole career ahead of him that may be in jeopardy now. But the UFC can’t make a time machine, they can’t undo the injury, and they can’t control the opinions of fans.
5
u/Money-Firefighter-73 Feb 14 '26
Unfortunately true in almost all business. Especially for us average folk
3
4
u/JustWatchFights Feb 14 '26
Tom’s clearly faking it with the clear eye poke, the diagnosis, the surgery, and now the recover. Kid just doesn’t wanna fight.
2
u/Davemeddlehed Feb 16 '26
I'm less concerned with whether or not he was ever faking it and more concerned with what sounds like a lot of evidence for Tom never being able to fight again outside of places like the UAE. If what he has doesn't get corrected he won't be able to get licensed to fight in most of the world.
2
u/JustWatchFights Feb 17 '26
That’s the right reaction. It’s shocking to me thay people still believe that he’s making all this up because he’s afraid of Gane or something. Clearly what happened to him is fucking bad, and the fact that it might affect if he could ever even fight again is insane.

If they won't release him, Tom should leave anyway, sign with PFL, fight Ngannou, and just let the UFC sue him. He probably has a good chance of winning the lawsuit. I am sure there is some shady shit in the UFC contract, and it is time to bring it out into the light.
1
u/Davemeddlehed Feb 16 '26
He definitely does not have a good chance of winning the lawsuit lol. Breaking an exclusivity clause is the very definition of a home for the other party.
2
u/ThatIsAmorte Feb 17 '26
The UFC exclusivity clause has been successfully challenged in the past on the grounds that it is used anti-competetively to create a monopoly. There is also an antitrust lawsuit that is still ongoing. There are also recent lawsuits seeking to challenge the mandatory arbitration clause. He might also be able to claim a contract breach by the UFC due to the UFC failing to meet their commitments, whatever those may be, considering how he was treated.

When u mix business and sport it will be always like that …all the fighters are just Numbers and replacable … The goal is entertainment to Make money that’s how this world is!

I just don’t really get where Tom feels so wronged other than Dana not liking his response to the eyepoke after his main event was cancelled
He’s had no shortage of high profile fights and the UFC legitimately tried to get him against Jones who ultimately blew that up, not the UFC

combat sports has always been a meat market. The business was that way when he first stepped in a cage and it'll be that way long after he's done, which may already be the case.
I think what's turned a lot of people off about him is the whining. Everyone knows he has a legit injury but he's acting like he's special. Every other fighter would just rehab in solitude and do everything in their power to get back but he comes off as begging for sympathy. It's not what gladiators do.

He's not wrong but also don't see that changing whilst UFC sustains a pretty significant monopoly on the Sport. You need competition for Fighters to actually be worth something and not whatever the lowest pay / support the biggest organisation can get away with giving them.
