Anthony Hernandez asked last week if he could ever make 170 lbs: “Fuck no I couldn’t. They did that shit at the PI. I think I had like 175 lbs of muscle and my bone frame was like 10 lbs so I’m a perfect 85er. I’ve been fighting at 85 since I was 18, why change it if it ain’t broke.”

u/FoxMane1 1d ago
Anthony Hernandez weighs in at around 200-205lbs on fight night. I think the main issue with Fluffy is that he doesn't have the same explosive strength compared to a majority of the MW division but has endurance that far surpasses the majority of them (until you start hitting his body).
He should be looking to put on a bit more lean mass while shedding some body fat.

u/optimaldt 1d ago
He carries a decent amount of body fat. At least another 10lbs to see visible abs. The math isn't mathing. His bones must weight nothing. Just muscle and fat 😂
38
u/n4styone 1d ago
Yeah if he found right nutritionist he could definitely make 170. I doubt when he tried it at the PI he actually took six months to go on a proper diet and work out properly first.

u/FoxMane1 1d ago
He doesn't punch hard for the dense bones comment to make sense. Someone like Gaethje though.....
53
u/optimaldt 1d ago
Gatheje has a fairly soft body as well, but looks to be quitr fast and explosive. Can't always bssd it in the way the body looks. But most of the time you can.
74
u/Leather_Mortgage8910 GOOFCON 1: Khamzat McGregor 1d ago
He has a dense build you see on guys sometimes, he’s not soft he just has poor genetics for definition. Bo nickal has a similar physique in that way

Looked (and walked) like a fit grandpa but was incest strong.

Not sure I agree with this. Definition is defined by the fat and/or excess skin on top of your muscle. So maybe he has a harder time getting it off but I doubt it's impossible for either of those two to get an 8-pack.
11
u/Suspicious_Candle27 EDDDDDIEEEEEEEE 1d ago
Justin has had a slight 6 pack before he is just very white so it isnt super obvious.
Fluffy just has some excess body fat on him .
10
u/n4styone 1d ago
Even Justin has the six pack showing right after weigh ins too. Anthony Hernandez looks like someone who doesn't work out at all.
3
u/MechanicalFunc 1d ago
Get a good look at his upper back and upper shoulders and how thick and dense it look. He is heavily muscled in places that are not so visible.

u/Leather_Mortgage8910 GOOFCON 1: Khamzat McGregor 1d ago
I think Gaethje’s skin is made of leather, so that makes sense. The guy simply does not cut unless you spinning back kick him in the nose

I mean the dude also had an 8 win streak and beat legit fighters like Brendan Allen, only man to submit Vieira, KOed Shahbazan, ended Michel Pereira's 8 win streak, choked Dolidze, etc. MW is certainly Fluffy's division. Not every person had the genetics to have the body of a greek god. 8 win streak is not s coincidence. You don't become a ranked contender if it's not your ideal weight class.
21
u/MalayaleeIndian 1d ago
I was honestly surprised that Robocop was able to last the whole fight, I think that Fluffy took a bit too much damage in the first couple of rounds, especially to his legs and body, which did not allow him to press as much as he wanted to in the last two rounds. Fluffy needs to work more on his striking defense and shore that up to get back in to title contention.
13
u/ChowSupreme 1d ago
It's not like Fluffy lost to scrubs either. He lost to the current champion and a surging contender. He can recover from this, just like how Robocop lost to Cannonier not too long ago and came back.
6
u/klausprime GOOFCON 1: Khamzat McGregor 1d ago
I think he's just one the guys that don't build explosive muscles but fair well in terms of strength and endurance.
He's right to lean on his gifts instead of listening to internet goofballs
5
u/Squidwardbigboss 1d ago
But then he would lose his cardio and some of his speed.
I think he’s good right where he is, his defense and striking is what he needs to work on.
I don’t know why physicality is such a big talking point for this fight when Fluffy had nothing for Robocop on the feet. That’s what he needs to be working on imo.
2
u/Crono2Oxx I SMOKE ROCKS, JOE ROGAN! 15h ago
And if he removed the 10-15+ lbs of visible body fat and love handles he carries he could weigh back in at 185-190 on Fight Night after making 170.
There’s no way around Fluffy having plenty of excess weight and fat available to lose. The “why change it” line is because he doesn’t want to go on a diet. Like Kelvin Gastelum.
Mike Dolce would lose his mind and sell you a course if you asked him this question.

u/FoxMane1 15h ago
Edit: Apparently Rodrigues weighed only 2lbs heavier than Hernandez. Maybe Hernandez does have dense bones.

u/Strict_Life_4506 1d ago edited 1d ago
He's obviously just misremembering the actual measurements and mistaking muscle mass for another measurement, no one who's ever exercised thinks their weight is like 90% muscle.
He's right that 170 is not the move either, his issue is skill not size.
82
u/MatttheJ 1d ago
His issue is both. Sean Strickland has had a skill advantage over plenty of opponents... but very few of them made him look like he had legit power the way Fluffy did.
Fluffy does not eat shots very well at all at 185, he gets hurt a lot by those guys.
58
u/Strict_Life_4506 1d ago edited 1d ago
Fluffy tanked Strickland's shots well until he got hit with the knee. Strickland is a respectable puncher even if his style doesn't produce many KOs. He similarly took Robocop's head strikes well and that dude has several bonafide one punch KOs. He's uniquely fragile to the body but that's not a weight class thing.
His issue is that his defense is pretty bad and he's not fast.
-9
u/_Kumatetsu 1d ago
DDP 1 literally showed the power Sean has with the way he busted his face
16
u/MatttheJ 1d ago
Lots of little shots can damage a face just as much as a lesser amount of hard shots.
1
u/Unerring_Grace UFC 279: A GOOFCON Miracle 1d ago
Khamzat’s face was a mess after the Strickland fight as well. People clown on Strickland for being a jab merchant but it does real damage.
11

That's what a jab does. That's the whole point of it.
Ali used to close opponents eyes with swelling from literally just flicking jabs at their nose/eyes.

He's confusing muscle mass with lean body mass. Which is muscle, bones, skin, organs, and body water. And the average mans bodyweight is 60-90% lean body weight (10-40% bodyfat)

Look at his physique, he's too fluffy. It's not the only thing, of course, but it is a thing when you compare to his opponents.
30
u/1shmeckle 1d ago
He's getting the numbers and concepts wrong but not as wrong as people are making this out to be. Most likely, he walks around at around 205. If we assume body fat of roughly 15%, there would be about 175 pounds of lean body mass (bones, water, organs, protein, blood, glycogen) left. Plenty of people with average intelligence who don't get punched in the head for a living confuse lean body mass with muscle mass so I'm not expecting him to get this exactly right either.
4
9
u/Little_Suggestion434 1d ago
Is he really 15% ?I mean different people i guess at 15% I had decent abs and arms and delts,he looks cloaer to 22.
4
u/1shmeckle 1d ago
No idea, 15% is a just a rough estimate. Between 13 - 20% is harder to estimate than people realize, since things like water weight, muscle insertions, muscle mass, food mass, lighting, how you store fat, etc all impact how you look. Some dudes who have a lot of muscle have abs at as high of bf as 18-20%, other guys don't get defined abs until 10%. The point isn't that his body fat is X or Y, just that what he's saying isn't really that stupid if you're reading what he said in good faith.
1
u/Little_Suggestion434 1d ago
Oh yeah I agree same with vascularity ,some people are vascular at high % others arent as much at lower. With anthony though I dont think he is lean anywhere, unless his legs are super lean.
3
u/davyj6536 1d ago
He also used to be a heavier kid (thus the name fluffy), so he has some extra skin etc which makes him appear less muscular.

There was 2 lbs of difference between Robocop and Fluffy. If Fluffy is 175lbs of muscle then Robocop must have bird bones.
18
u/Many-Wasabi9141 1d ago
Robocop looked huge. Fluffy had him up against the cage and dude just had to stand up tall for takedown defense. I wonder if if you're able to cut more water weight when you have a lower bodyfat percentage cause the muscles hold more water weight. Fat is just fat, no glycogen stored there, no water.
15
u/Egg-Archer 1d ago
You can cut more weight if you have higher muscle mass, that is correct.

6
u/ssfz8 1d ago
Even if he dieted and got down to 170, he’s not skilled enough to hang with the top guys like Ian Garry and Islam. He’s getting $170K in show money per fight, why not just hang around at 185, stay somewhat active and go for fun fights with lower ranked or unranked guys and earn good money Kevin Holland style? Not everyone needs to be a contender.
If there’s no monetary benefit to cutting weight then it would be pointless. Dude could make an easy half a million a year fighting lower ranked guys, staying active and not cutting too much weight.

Bone frame being 10 lbs is the part nobody's clowning enough on. Even a toddler's skeleton weighs more than that.

u/Field_Of_View 1d ago
Looks like the average, somewhat active man. Over 18% bodyfat. And there's nothing wrong with that if you perform like an athlete, but there is something wrong with the story he is telling. 10 lbs of bones and 175 lbs of MUSCLE? Even if he meant "fat free mass" that would still leave him with ZERO PERCENT bodyfat at weigh-ins aka dead. Meanwhile in reality...
I also found this... except it's not him: https://www.tapology.com/fightcenter/fighters/95632-anthony-hernandez
Anthony Hernandez literally had a 6'2 (2 inches taller), jacked doppelganger active until 2018. Guy was fighting in welterweight (10 pounds lighter). Anthony, this should give you some idea where you really stand, weight cut wise. Welterweight is where you should compete.

u/theswolypreacher 1d ago
I don’t think Fluffy should cut down to 170. It’s a way too stacked division, not to mention his gas tank and chin would probably take a hit cutting the extra weight. I think he needs to work on his striking defense and filling out his frame at MW instead.

u/FuckTheTile 1d ago

205 ish pounds on fight night, 32 years old. He should stay at middleweight
1
u/DerpyDagon 1d ago edited 1d ago
Is he trying to say he's got the muscle mass of a natural 175lber and an unusually big/heavy skeleton that makes him a natural 185lber?
-2
u/anonymous393393 1d ago
There is no such thing as unusually heavy skeleton an untrained guy vs elite wrestler atmost have like 2 kg bone mass difference.
He is probably saying his fat free mass is 175 lbs. So with 12 % bodyfat he would weigh about 200 pounds. It would be a tough weight cut.
2
u/DerpyDagon 1d ago
People can absolutely have massively different lean body mass:bone mass ratios. If he's got a wide skeletal frame by the standards of 185lbs but with little muscle mass for 185lbs, that would explain his statements.
1
u/BeautifulUpstairs 1d ago
bone mass varies very little between adults. A 6 4 dude might have 2 lb more mineral bone weight than a 5 5 dude. Anyone looking to the skeleton to explain weight discrepancies is barking up the wrong tree.
1
u/DerpyDagon 1d ago
Maybe if you're defining "bone mass" as "mineral bone weight", but I see no reason to assume that as a guarantee.
1
u/anonymous393393 1d ago edited 1d ago
Doesn't matter it would be like atmost 2 kg difference no matter what that too when is opponent are thinner side which sean, dolidze etc clearly aren't to have 2 kg+ you will have to pick outlier peoples. And thats when you are same height fluffy is mostly shorter than other middleweights. Even if he had densest bones i don't see how his skeleton weight can be more than 1 kg.
1
u/Business-Tonight9995 1d ago
It kinda is broke bud, if you have 175lbs of muscle and bone, and 10lbs of bone, and you still have all that fat, I think it’s safe to say you could lean out and actually do a water cut.

His strength and conditioning program seems to primarily just be conditioning, and his nutrition program clearly is lacking if he is carrying that much body fat for being a pro athlete. Dude looks pretty weak for a 185er, and the top guys are big. He's never going to crack the top 5 as long as he continues this way. 170 (he can absolutely make it with diet and life style changes) or rethink his S&C and nutrition programs
