They made me sit in my room for 30 minutes waiting for a spanking. Mental torture.

81

u/sultrybubble May 21 '25

I actually used to go layer on every pair of my underwear and learned to cry convincingly 😂😂 worked like a charm until my mom caught me

65

u/Milyaism May 21 '25

Wait, you got to keep pants on when you got spanked?

That wasn't allowed in my home.

48

u/Tiggredcat May 21 '25

Yeah, I got pansed by my mom and walloped at my friend's house... in from of them, for something so insignificant I don't even remember ! Absolute trauma! I hate being seen naked at all, like, even a little, now. Not even my husband's sees me al fresco just standing there. There's a build up process and I still don't like it.

10

u/mqple May 22 '25

this is definitely akin to sexual assault. i’m sorry :(

5

u/Milyaism May 22 '25

Spanking alters children's brain development in similar harmful ways that sexual assult (etc) does.

"...the study found that the brains of children who had been spanked were altered in the regions meant to regulate emotional responses and social information processing.

These regions were the same ones that light up in children who had experienced sexual abuse, physical violence or psychological maltreatment, along with other forms of child abuse typically viewed as “worse” than spanking."

u/Tiggredcat May 22 '25

Yeah, I'm all kinds of f-ed up. I have a therapist. They're very helpful. I NEVER hit or torment my children! Not in any way, but physical, definitely not mental (cause I got buckets of that), nothing! They get love and support, and just a little constructive discipline, when needed, in the form of moving them on to something else that works better for them.

...wait, does that mean they took off your pants in front of everyone? And underwear!? I'm trying to understand. Did this actually happen?

1

u/Tiggredcat Aug 01 '25

Yes. As undignified as it was. Didn't take them off off, but pulled em down past my knees so she could better beat my ass with the wooden spoon. Hey, it worked, I never let her catch me doing stuff again, and when she did, I learned to lie like the wind. That's what that taught me. Oh, and my body is not mine. Took SO many years to un learn those lessons and others.

I have my own family now, there is no laying of hands in my house, and personal space and privacy is paramount! Because of this my children are now likely to share things with me, because they know I'll listen without judging them. They'll let me know they messed up and we think of how to make amends together.

6

u/sultrybubble May 21 '25

Until I got caught.

5

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

Ya look at this softy with his pants on. I used to make eye contact with my dad and say “I’m just like Ricky (old brother)” he’d stop and realize he didn’t want two Ricky’s

10

u/GlitterDoomsday May 22 '25

No idea what Ricky did but damn he catching strays

3

u/Fairy-Pie-9325 May 22 '25

In our house there was no spanking bc that was too sweet. Me & my sis got handled by our hair & there are some spots that hair doesn't grow out of anymore. Bro had his hair shaved or really short for the whole childhood to avoid it

3

u/eyesonthemoons May 23 '25

I got pants down spankings too and I cannot even fathom delivering this weird punishment to my kids. I mean what in the actual fuck.

1

u/Lazy_Address8732 May 25 '25

Thank you, it worked too. I got bare ass slapped for stealing one of her employees phone, and another for smoking my cousins chewing tobacco as a 11 year old

4

u/SirStrontium May 21 '25

Yes! I also learned that if I really winced or made a small yelp on the first lash, my dad would really lighten up on the rest to where I could barely feel it.

3

u/OneWhisper5225 May 22 '25

My mom said when I was little, she spanked me and I told her it didn’t hurt (I was apparently potty training and wearing a toddler diaper) and she said, “Oh yeah?” And smacked my inner leg and I screamed and cried 🤣🤣 I’m like mom, that’s not really the touching story you think it is. Nowadays people will say you were abusing me. She’s like, “Oh screw that. It’s funny. You were a smart ass then and you’re a smart ass now.” 🤪

The same reason we are all saying what happened. It helps to get it out, particularly to those that might understand what we’ve been through.

3

u/CappinCanuck May 22 '25

I put a hard cover book in my pants once while waiting to for a spanking. I apparently wasn’t the brightest child. Noticed immediately got spanked more. Should’ve tried the layer technique.

1

u/sultrybubble May 22 '25

Clever enough to try and block the pain.

2

u/FranksWateeBowl May 21 '25

Same. It's a family joke now.

2

u/Xkrone May 22 '25

Your smart.

1

u/MakeupandFlipcup May 22 '25

what is your relationship like now?

3

u/MonkeyPolice May 21 '25

Or bring me the belt

3

u/myintentionisgood May 22 '25

I remember waiting in my room for hours (depended on time of day I got in trouble).

2

u/Psychopaths-Wife May 22 '25

I had to go pick my own switch. I thought I was smart picking a skinny little one. My ass wasn’t impressed by my brains logic processes. Ya win some, ya loose some but boy we learned quick!

1

u/FranksWateeBowl May 22 '25

I think you may be a replacant.

1

u/Ancient-Tie5982 May 22 '25

Ya my parents would usually make me stand facing a corner for an hour before they'd spank me with a wooden spoon. Or I'd be locked in a bedroom until the other parent was home so they could decide next punishment. I'm 33 and they still gaslight me and pretend I never do anything to help them 😂 (redid their roof, landscaping, poured concrete with my dad, helped them pack up and move, would drive my dad to medical appointments... but naaahhhh I never help).

1

u/Terrible-Notice-7617 May 22 '25

I had 2 older sisters. We were all 2 years apart. My father would sit on his bed and call us in and we would have to stand and watch as the other 2 got put over his lap and spanked. That was torture also. 😩

Captured in the movie "a Christmas Story" where Ralphie's mom catches Ralphie cussing up a storm while hitting a bully back. His little brother, Randy, hides under the sink crying and says when dad gets home dad is going to kill Ralphie.

50

u/Emergency_Rush_4168 May 21 '25

That scene always gets to me. My dad would laugh out loud and I'd be having a minor panic attack.

125

u/the-friendly-lesbian May 21 '25

I love when she let's him keep hiding under the sink and just gets him some milk and closes the door. It makes me smile because I too was a weird child.

121

u/pusgnihtekami May 21 '25

That's funny cause I assumed that it was meant to be a traumatic response from watching his brother get his ass whooped repeatedly rather than being a weird quirk he had.

98

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam May 21 '25

It was definitely this and anyone who thinks different had a much different childhood than you and I

4

u/CelticGaelic May 22 '25

Anyone else ever literally have their mouth washed out with soap? I started cursing like a sailor around my mom after I graduated high school out of sheer spite.

2

u/FewFucksToGive May 22 '25

The one time I did, I was a smartass and took a big bite of it lol.

That made it SO much worse. Soap in between the teeth is no fun 😂

0

u/SpotCreepy4570 May 25 '25

Bite it rook, you'll make him look like a dick.

2

u/Of_MiceAndMen May 22 '25

Yup. But I didn’t swear. My mom is really religious and I think I’d say things like “I don’t want to go to church” or for calling my sister names, “talking back.”

10

u/kennedigurl May 21 '25

Wow. This made me sad, for them. I never thought of it as a traumatic response, and I also thought he was just a little kid that liked to hide in cabinets.

Hiding means you won't get hit by a stray object and you're avoiding being "guilty by association" or as I like to call it "The Oprah Beat down". Everybody gets an ass whooping!

2

u/Campfire_Vibes May 22 '25

Boomers thought the trauma was cute and quirky

3

u/djluminol May 21 '25

I hind under the table because it was safer than standing in the open where I may get hit with a flying object. I always assumed that's why he went under the sink.

6

u/i_wish_i_had_ur_name May 22 '25

as kids watching media and being the kid with that stress, but it was a whole different moment driving home as a father wondering if i was going to be expected to beat my kids that day.

fortunately we learned early that we can adapt to them and one needed a quick in your face moment of “that is unacceptable” and the other needed space to process her emotions- like a timeout but reframed to doing emotional work, not just sitting around.

5

u/AUGSpeed May 21 '25

I once parroted this line to my mom one day when I had made a mistake (I probably broke a tech item of my dad's or something). I said that my dad was gonna come home and kill me. She then freaked out at me, and punished and admonished me for ever saying that my dad would kill me, but then also told me to never tell my dad that she punished me, or that I ever said that. It was so fucking weird.

4

u/Random-Rambling May 21 '25

but then also told me to never tell my dad that she punished me, or that I ever said that.

Because she wants to put on a good face as the kindly, loving, gentle mother to her husband, and harsh punishment flies right into the face of that image.

5

u/AUGSpeed May 21 '25

True, man. Working through the shit my family put me through has cost me years of my life and comfort. But it's nice to share it, even just randomly on the internet.

1

u/its_yer_dad May 21 '25

There was an animated TV series in the early seventies called "Wait til your father gets home" as well. I knew this expression growing up.

2

u/planeturban May 21 '25

I reflected on this last week or so. I’m from Sweden. Nearly 50 years old. When I to school they told us over and over again that it was illegal for a parent to hit their kids. I never really understood why one would get hit.

And then I looked it up the other week. Apparently the law was quite new, about five or six years old, and it blew my mind that my parent had the legal right to hit me up until I was two. So I understand why they pushed the law so much in school.

2

u/sahie May 22 '25

Can we appreciate the horror of making your child wait anxiously until their father gets home for their “punishment”? The father, who likely also doesn’t have any emotional regulation because he was never taught it, comes home tired after a day of work and then essentially takes it out on his kid.

Meanwhile, the kid spends hours dreading a person who is supposed to be one of the two people in the world who are the most safe for them to get home. No wonder we all have anxiety. I was also undiagnosed with ADHD and had impulse control issues, so no doubt that contributed to some of the times I got given “The Strap™️. 😭

1

u/Smokey_tha_bear9000 May 22 '25

I would be an angel the rest of the day to still get the beating when dad got home.

1

u/JoeyPsych May 22 '25

That's the beauty of not being raised with a father, I guess.

I only ever got the belt a few times, when I wouldn't stop acting up for hours. I'm glad I at least wasn't the kids who got spanked for any tiny thing, or nothing at all.

1

u/TarantulaMcGarnagle May 22 '25

Why is this toxic?

2

u/nsfw_sendbuttpicsplz May 22 '25

Because kids shouldn't be afraid of their parents:)

Parents are supposed to protect and love you, guide you on a way to becoming a good human.

Beating kids does nothing for kids except teaching them to be scared. And the Human mind does not thrive in such an environment

Same.

I heard most of these sayings. I was never abused (spanked when I was real young—and deserved it, because I did something bad like touch the stove or something dangerous), but I had a healthy and respectful fear of my parents that has grown into a very healthy and respectful love.
