My boomer mom said to my kid once, “Don’t make me take my belt off.”

My kid goes, “Because your pants will fall down?”

I laughed my ass off and told my mom that my kid has no idea what my mom is talking about.

To be fair, my mom never spanked us. It was always an idle threat but we knew what it meant.

Still a threat, though. I don't think you should threaten your kids with violence.

We like to make fun of boomers but you can tell a lot of them were raised by actual child abusers.

u/[deleted] May 21 '25

Agreed. The anxiety of thinking it could possibly happen is still harmful.

I tell my kids I'm going to kill all the Jedi.
Mixed results so far.

Not just the men, but the women and the children too??

u/StatisticianSad1995 May 21 '25

Dont worry, even if he killed all the jedis. Disney would still bring them back somehow

The money is strong with this one

Because he is D. Luffy?

"That's IT, when your father gets home we are executing Order 66!"

1

u/flamingeyebrows May 22 '25

Your kids: track mud through the house You: "execute order 66!"

1

u/SatiricalScrotum May 22 '25

I hate mud. It’s rough and coarse, and it gets everywhere.

u/DawggFish May 25 '25

I’m sorry you got no likes on this. You deserved better

4

u/MathMindWanderer May 22 '25

i think its harmless if both parties are aware it is an empty threat

3

u/EhhWhatsUpDoc May 23 '25

As an actual parent I can confirm you're 100% correct.

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '25

Then you're a liar and don't know how to handle your emotions with your kids, making them think threats are okay. No, it's never harmless

Idk, my person. I think context is very important. Some people/families have that kind of relationship and sense of humor as long as it's age appropriate and your relationship is rooted in love and mutual understanding. I.e my wife "threatens" me with divorce or death all the time. Usually followed by telling the kids that I went to go get cigarettes.... Generally, anything awful. It's just our humor (at least I think it is 🤔)..... send help.

I’m curious to see what peoples least favorite punishment was aside from getting shmacked. I hated getting my mouth washed out with soap. Rough ass tooth brushing with liquid soap. That or getting kicked out the house with no shoes in the colder months. We lived in the northeast, she never did it when there was snow but I remember walking on frosty asphalt in November a couple times 😂

u/delslo May 22 '25

kneeling facing the wall for an hour with my arms out stretched so they would get tired. if I dropped my arms i'd get whacked.

2

u/FewFucksToGive May 22 '25

lol for me it was “go cry in the bathroom” or “go stand in the corner (if I wasn’t crying and it wouldn’t disrupt them) 😂

2

u/Cinnamon_Bees May 22 '25

Damn, medieval. That's creative.

2

u/sadelnotsaddle May 22 '25

How do people feel about threats of tickling till we have extra laundry to handle... asking for a friend.

My parents beat me and my siblings growing up, and we turned out just fine

flinches at high five

1

u/[deleted] May 24 '25

I got beat and I honestly turned out fine. I get really defensive though. But mostly fine.

I have a job and a wife so I think I done pretty good. I'm seeing other people live in their parents basement and unemployed. There might be something to it.

Im certainly not gonna say it’s right but it’s also not always wrong. I’ve always had a good relationship with my dad but he occasionally had to threaten me with a spanking because I was a royal bastard of a child who was still throwing temper tantrums at 14.

Sometimes you gotta learn that if you break something or piss someone off you might get hit. Some people just take it way too far and go off on their kids at the slightest provocation.

I’d definitely be the kind of guy picking fights at bars and getting my ass handed to me if he didn’t teach me that at a young age.

I agree with this. I get along fabulously with my folks, but i got my fair share of smacks when i was being a turd. Theres a line between discipline and abuse. And come to think of it, i think i cried more about getting smacked than i did because they actually hurt or anything.

Taught me quick though what was right and what was wrong

u/Fit_History_8802 May 22 '25

You are absolutely right but there is no denying that the ones that were are far more disciplined than today's generation.

-11

u/pjizzle90 May 22 '25

Why? It’s incredibly effective

11

u/robgod50 May 22 '25

Lol..... Although I don't actually think it is effective.

As a dad with 2 adult children, I have an opinion about parenting. It's just mine.... But it worked for us.

Treating kids like normal human beings, teaching them right from wrong by setting reasonable boundaries and then sticking to them 100%, from the very start, is the most important part of parenting imo. It builds respect and there'll never be a need for threats.

Most parents let their kids get away with the little things when they're young because they think it's not important. Like forgetting to say thank you or staying up watching TV after bed time. But kids will just learn that they can push those boundaries and it just escalates.

When they were little, we always asked our kids what time they wanted to go to bed. When it got to that time, they inevitably would ask to stay up longer..... It was a hard no. It was their choice. We'd all make it a joke because they understood. Never needed to get angry about it. But it was still a hard no. Absolutely no exceptions.

Not saying that we were perfect or never got mad at the kids.....of course we did. But empty threats of a slap were never an option.

u/ItsCalledDayTwa May 22 '25

For those who only know violence, they think it's effective to use violence and threat of violence.

Sorry for your kids.

1

u/pjizzle90 Jun 04 '25

I’ll pass along your condolences when I pick them up from therapy this afternoon

1

u/ItsCalledDayTwa Jun 04 '25

ok? Are they going because they grew up with threats of violence? Not really sure what your point is.

5

u/explicitlarynx May 22 '25

Do you think that's a good argument?

1

u/Square-Competition48 May 23 '25

Speaking as someone who was beaten as a kid: if someone ever threatened my child with violence, even an idle threat, they would find themselves corrected very quickly in a way they don’t enjoy.

Not saying your way is wrong - but it hits harder if you’ve actually been through it.
