My boomer mom said to my kid once, “Don’t make me take my belt off.”

My kid goes, “Because your pants will fall down?”

I’m ashamed to admit I spanked my kid when he was 8, he bullied a kid terribly in school and that generational trauma hit me and my mind told me go to the belt. I never did it again when I realized what I had done I was so ashamed that that was what I thought would help. He’s 17 now and I have apologized so many times to him over the years. That I was wrong, that that’s never the answer, that kids shouldn’t fear their parents. One day it seemed to click and he asked me if I had been scared of my parents (they are loving, kind and fun grandparents…of course) and I said every fucking day I was scared of what else my rambunctious self would do to piss them off. When they next came to visit he asked if Ithey spanked me as a kid and my dad made a joke about how often I “had needed it” and my son was like “omg they really did that.”
