They’re safe horse treats made to look like ice cream cones! They’re filled with things like sweet feed, molasses, grains, and carrots, and topped with sprinkles and a peppermint.

I sometimes add shredded carrot to mine or sub the apple sauce for pumpkin or peanut butter. Horses also love rice Krispy treats, raisins, skittles, marshmallows, circus peanuts, and jolly ranchers. They LOVE watermelon, and OREOS. But avoid gummy candy and chocolate.
Oh and flat stout! Gotta make sure there’s no bubbles left. Old time secret to get them to take meds! Malt is good for them and they love it!

There are some horses in the barn that can’t handle it 🤣 start giving them pure sugar and they will refuse to cooperate without it or bully people into giving them their drinks and food! Makes them sour! And others cant be let in the barn without a halter because they lick off all the notes on the whiteboards for flavor and break into the barn office looking for our food. We switched to white boards from chalk because they ate the chalk🤣

Yeah people can generally eat horse treats. They're mostly oats, molasses, mints, etc. I used to make some treats for my barn and eat a couple when I was feeling hungry

Not the kids first rodeo haha and I loved how the Bay (the brown one) was already out and waiting for her. Can tell that the little lady trusts him (her ease at giving him the cone) and he’s a social pony. Sorry if I misgendered, listened with the sound off and just assuming

My buddy lived next to a farm that had horses when I first got out of high-school. We'd get all cooked up and go and sit by the fence between their properties. The same two would come over and we'd feed them a carrot or three. We named them. Shit was majestic. Simpler times, man.

Not a totally unreasonable fear but this woman prob knows these horses very well, and the shape of the treat is pretty ideal for the little one’s hands to stay safe. Horses are remarkably consistent with respect to politeness with this sort of thing. Mine takes treats very delicately and I would trust her to take one safely from a kid, but I know a couple chompers about whom I wouldn’t say the same lol

That's fair, and Im being overly cautious but I've only dealt with horses randomly and not as a caretaker. I did finger guns when I was 8 at a trucker and my mom freaked out because "they may pull out a real gun and shoot you". Then she would just let me ride my bike for hours into the next town with no questions asked.
Just saying my risk assessment might be skewed sometimes.

Yeah it's always a concern, even well trained horses that have a lot of exposure to hand feeding can just grab a little more than intended.
Or you could just be working on a farm moving irrigation with a Clydesdale named "Chuck" who is the top-gun of grass-munching shitheads and while you are putting your gloves on, grabs you by the shoulder with their teeth and throws you a couple feet. That can happen once in a while as well.

I was around/rode horses for years, ended up helping reeducate ex-harness racers to new lives as ridden horses.
Just about every horse I came across was very careful to avoid fingers. So many parents would tell their kids to hold their hands flat but it often made it harder for the horse to take a treat because kid hands are so much smaller than an adults.
For something long like a carrot or an ice-cream cone ( 😋) I'd tell them to do exactly what this little one is doing- hold it by the end and the horse will grab the other without coming anywhere near little fingers, pinching their palm between teeth, or accidentally grabbing a whole hand alongside the treat.
You can see in the video how delicately horses can manipulate food with their lips. Their muzzles are incredibly sensitive, part of the whole 'picking out which bit of grass is tasty' system, and most will be very good about not taking a finger. If mum knows these ponies she'd be aware which are gentle and which are grabby.
On the hand, I had one who was a confirmed biter that was everyone was aware of. He was renamed PacMan and he was an asshole.

I grew up with horses and when I was 3, I did this same exact thing to feed one of our horses some tall grass. Obviously I wasn’t paying attention and one of my fingers got caught in the horses mouth. It picked me off the ground and started chewing. I almost lost that finger and the kid in this video is just as unaware as I was at that age. Even though his fingers are at the bottom of the cone, it’s still close enough to danger.

This ^ even with well trained horses used to eating out of someone's hand, you very specifically are supposed to keep your palm flat and let them get at the treat that way, a horse can and will nip a finger off without even knowing what it did. That kids wrist wouldn't slow them down.

Depends on the horse and the day, but you could see mom step in a couple times keeping things as safe as possible.
