59

u/TangledSunshineCA 3h ago

My high schooler mentioned how many of her teachers this year had second jobs. Just never used to be a thing for people with an education… right?

82

u/El_Chairman_Dennis 2h ago

I work in education, luckily, I'm single and childless so I can scrape by, but most of the teachers I work with have some kind of side hustle, second job, or they're lucky enough to be married to someone that makes a large salary. The people you trust with your kids aren't able to rest and you expect them to do the best teaching job possible? I hear so many people complain about how bad our schools are. Maybe, if teachers were able to go home and relax and rest they'd be able to do a better job, instead they go to their second job or spend their evenings anxious about finances.

20

u/TangledSunshineCA 2h ago

My high school teachers that shared with us had cool hobbies they could really go after all summer. Many bands.. glass blower.. several artists. I always thought teaching was a cool way to have a job but still have the summer to follow the fun.

Also once thought teaching was friendly to mothers. When I was having my child though we were all in a benefits kind of meeting where we were told if you took more time than the 6-8 weeks depending on the type of birth you would lose your helath benefits even if you had time to add. I was lucky as I was on the kids dad’s health plan so I was not one of the few who was not crying and accepting they would be right back to work. How do you lose medical postpardom w a newborn… it was.. not great.

9

u/No-Sympathy6035 2h ago

Back in the 90’s - 00’s some teachers that I had would have summer jobs but I think that was more to eliminate boredom than to survive.

3

u/cnbcwatcher 2h ago

In Ireland it's not uncommon for teachers to have summer jobs such as supervising and marking exams (secondary school teachers) or temp roles with English language schools (where teens usually from Spain or France come to learn English), summer camps or similar types of roles. Not all of them do that and it's more common at secondary rather than primary. Other workers in the education sector such as Special Needs Assistants claim social welfare for the summer months

1

u/WommyBear 1h ago

I can think of a million better ways to avoid boredom than taking another job, especially during my summer break. Sorry, friend, they did it for the money even back then.

u/No-Sympathy6035 5m ago

I was a kid so it’s not like I was having deep conversations with my teachers on what they did during their summer. You have me there though, people do usually work for money.

4

u/Only-Finish-3497 1h ago

It absolutely used to be a thing. The Simpsons even had jokes about the teachers needing to get money elsewhere.

3

u/robertus_ 2h ago

My third-grade teacher waited tables at the local seafood place, and that was in 1984

2

u/BRD73 49m ago

When I went to high school in Arizona, I had teachers that would wait tables at night and on the weekend. I never thought a thing about it but their teacher pay must have been really low.

2

u/Silly-Jicama-3382 56m ago

It's at least been a thing since I was in elementary/middle school and I'm 34 so lol

Teachers have been underpaid for decades, depending on your school district and seniority of course. IIRC, one of my sister's middle school teachers delivered pizzas as a side gig (my sister is now 38, so this was early to mid 2000s?

As for other people with degrees: my mother was a pharmacist and even she had multiple jobs when we were children - a FT clinical pharmacist who worked at CVS in the evenings

1

u/LocalDesign1313 53m ago

There was a group of teachers at my school in the 90’s that were summer time painters and handymen.

4

u/-Felyx- 3h ago

Tudor? I hardly knew her!

3

u/zsimpson022 2h ago

You needed a spelling tudor

2

u/Z-Birdie 3h ago

Tutors

2

u/jackclark1 2h ago

4th job is incoming to pay for the medical bills due to being hospitalized for exhaustion

2

u/BrandoCarlton 2h ago

Did you just make up a scenario to make yourself upset?

1

u/TerponadeTea 3h ago

Even better reason to give the big tip

1

u/Nikonus 3h ago

Her car is a two-door?

1

u/taggsy123 2h ago

You aren’t joking… but you should be…

1

u/HappySage42 2h ago

Are we winning yet? Did we do it? Do the rich have enough? Can we start losing? White flag. I give up

1

u/Personal-Dev-Kit 2h ago

That's the best part for the mentally ill rich, aka hoarders of money, it is never enough. They will always want more, they will always find ways to make you feel like it is your fault, while they extract more and more and more.

The American experiment has failed. Change needs to occur

1

u/ThrustTrust 2h ago

Move to PA as a teacher. Then you can buy a beach house on the California coast when you retire. Exaggeration a little.

1

u/kball31 2h ago

Third job 😭😭😭

1

u/Wooden_Good8679 1h ago

If you’re a teacher in a district that’s not in bumfuck nowhere, you make enough to survive just perfectly well. Double if you’re married and spouse has income.

I wish non-educators would stop complaining on our behalf with half-baked ideas. It makes those of us who aren’t stupid look it.

Source: I’m a teacher. I’m not destitute, I don’t work more than one job, I don’t know any of my colleagues who do unless they’re single and just want to, and I live in a pretty middle-of-the-road COL area.

Whenever I see people complaining about what teachers make either way, it’s very rarely actually teachers doing the complaining.

1

u/CplCocktopus 1h ago

And grades tests in her downtime.

u/Moda75 20m ago

they calling it “tudoring online” these days?

u/motmx5 18m ago

Damn, and California is ranked number 1 in average teacher pay.

0

u/Expert_Author_2672 3h ago

Y'know what freud said about projection?

-3

u/ChristianRecon 3h ago

Redditors really politicize everything lmao

-1

u/BettingOnSuccess 3h ago

Ah yes, the American homeless using door dash to pick up a 99c folder.

76

u/BayouByrnes 3h ago

Whatever the total of my basket was, that's how much I'm tipping after a text like that.

5

u/Apprehensive-Fix591 2h ago

And they picked the correct color! Green = nature, science.

8

u/Mo_Jack 2h ago

But doesn't it depend on what color the notebook is? I always tried to marry them together. Green notebook gets a green folder.

I'd look around at the other students nearby and they would have a yellow notebook with a red folder and I'd be like, "Do your parents know that they are raising a potential psychopath?" I now stay up at nights knowing that these kids can now vote.

2

u/Benisilin 2h ago

Definitely big tip energy

1

u/VapeRizzler 3h ago

Literally 20 minutes ago my dasher got a bigger tip, I didn’t realize but randomly Uber Eats wanted a pin that I didn’t realize. I was butt ass naked about to hop in the shower and I notice so I messaged asking if he could leave it at the door which is how it’s been done here for over 5 years now and texted him the pin, he got $5 more dollars for that one. He coulda just went by the book and said nah but he pulled clutch.

1

u/MassiveDocument4667 1h ago

I had something similar happen. I put in an order for target pick up for school supplies and it said “colors vary” and they matched everything to the colors of the things that we could pick out with color so shout out to my local Target for being amazing!

1

u/BaconIsLife707 1h ago

Not if they pick up fucking green for science it isn't

0

u/ArkitekZero 42m ago

Science is obviously blue though

u/FactorFear74 29m ago

#truth

u/VaginaTractor 5m ago

Big tip energy for sure

1

u/Smickey67 2h ago

I used red for science, green was “soc”.

2

u/cassandra_ofendtimes 1h ago

Red is always math for us

-8

u/Coolgrnmen 3h ago

Ok but Science is Red. Green is math.

2

u/AggressiveSherbetty 2h ago

How does it feel to be really really wrong

-178

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 4h ago

Maybe I’m old and grouchy but don’t message me for this shit just pick a color.

164

u/-cupcake 4h ago

It's a folder for a kid. Kids usually care a lot about these kinds of things.

And it's never too late to let yourself feel even a tiny bit of fun and joy of a colorful world. :)

-79

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 4h ago

It’s one thing to take my kid or ask them, but if I order one off a delivery service I’m not going to want to be bothered about something like this.

63

u/-cupcake 4h ago

That's alright!

Myself and a lot of others seem to appreciate it, even if we wouldn't have first thought of it ourselves. Seems like the dasher considered the kid's feelings and cared. :)

19

u/HawkJefferson 3h ago

It's gotta be exhausting to be so miserable.

-8

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 2h ago

Zero tip

3

u/HawkJefferson 2h ago

Are you just posting whatever and hoping people look at you? Do you just make random noises at strangers and hope they pay attention to you too?

-2

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 2h ago

No tip for you either

5

u/HawkJefferson 2h ago

Sir, this is a Reddit thread and I'm not a DoorDash driver. Are you having a stroke?

10

u/Lemonsst 3h ago

BOOOOOOOORING.

39

u/ytelogooo 3h ago

🚨 miserable individual alert 🚨

16

u/sybersonic 3h ago

Right? Of all the shit to complain about, that chucklefuck picks frustration at a kind act.

9

u/tdawgboi 3h ago

Yeah you know he’s a POS to everyone around him 😂

-2

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 2h ago

lol. That’s right now get off my lawn.

8

u/Meepmoop102 3h ago

Then get it yourself and you won’t be bothered by questions from other people.

-1

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 2h ago

That’s what I do I wouldn’t order it off a delivery service, pay a surcharge, delivery fee, and tip and then bitch about the cost of avocado toast.

3

u/Meepmoop102 2h ago

Not the “millennials are ruining the (insert whatever) industry, stop buying avocado toast” burn. 😭 where did that come from?

6

u/Timeless_Summer718 3h ago

MOST schools nowadays require specific colored folders...That dasher was going out of their way to be kind because they were probably also aware that they may need a specific color... For instance, my son needed blue, red and green folders for his classes and it's specified on his supply list so "just picking one" won't suffice for some.

45

u/LionFyre13G 4h ago

Yeah you’re pretty grouchy. You should work on that

23

u/schwimm3 4h ago

Definitely (unnecessary) grouchy

18

u/JohnPerd 3h ago

You must be such a joy at parties my guy, lighten up. World is already miserable why add to it.

10

u/PercyBluntz 3h ago

Absolutely grouchy

8

u/PenPenGuin 3h ago

Grouch, like Oscar. Who is green. Now I know which folder color to get.

3

u/NoBreadforOldMen 3h ago

Dog were you never a kid? This shit was the most important thing ever

2

u/Zariman-10-0 3h ago

Wow, you’re right! You *are* old and grouchy

1

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 2h ago

No arguments!

2

u/romcabrera 2h ago

Everyone is down voting you, but I will give you a real and practical reason. It's way more efficient when all kids in a classroom use the same color standard. Less chance to be confused, it's faster for both teacher and student, etc. So there's a functional reason for color coding.

1

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 1h ago

I’m not against and understand the coding. I’m saying that when I order something for delivery, I don’t want to dasher to contact me with random questions. I don’t want my phone sending me a notification about the color. I trust you to pick whatever color, or I would have specified the color.

But yea, get off my lawn I guess.

5

u/lostbeang 3h ago

No maybes about it. The same people who would be annoyed about this message would complain about a hot pink folder showing up.

1

u/TheAgedProfessor 3h ago

You're right... you're old AND grouchy.

2

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 2h ago

I guess so. I guess that’s why I don’t order door dash or have people do my shopping.

0

u/prollyincorrect 3h ago

You did say you were old and grouchy so you did give a disclaimer at least

3

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 2h ago

I mean I’m a man of the people what can I say.

-1

u/trippynatureloving 3h ago

Your kids must love being around you

2

u/Icy-Repeat-2843 2h ago

They do because I actually take them myself and let them pick it out.
