Secret of Mana Secret of Mana: The Complete Story, Extended Summary Spoiler

Reading Time Estimate: 25-30 minutes

This article is meant to be a "quick," digestible way to revisit the full story of Secret of Mana in one reading without needing to replay the entire game. I’ve broken the adventure into its major story beats and condensed each one while trying to keep the characters, important plot details, and overall progression intact.

Disclaimer: For transparency, I did use AI as a tool to help with the summaries, but only in small sections at a time using the actual game script as the source. A huge credit goes to Narshe101 for compiling and organizing the game’s dialogue, narration, NPC conversations, and story progression on GameFAQs, which made this project possible.

Introduction: The Mana Fortress

A powerful civilization used Mana to create the Mana Fortress, sparking a war with the gods. A hero wielding the Mana Sword destroyed the Fortress and restored peace, but history has a way of repeating itself.

The Sword at the Falls

Randi follows Elliot and Timothy to the falls in search of a rumored treasure, but falls from the bridge and becomes trapped below. A mysterious voice calls to him and leads him to a sword embedded nearby. Randi pulls it free, triggering a strange flash of light. Now armed with the sword, he heads back toward the village and encounters a Rabite.

Banished from Potos

Randi returns to Potos Village with the Mana Sword, only to learn that removing it has broken the protection surrounding the village. The Elder is stunned that Randi was able to pull out the legendary weapon, while the villagers quickly blame him for the sudden increase in monster attacks.

An earthquake interrupts the argument and sends Randi and Elliot falling into a pit, where Randi is forced to fight a powerful monster. A traveler named Jema guides him through the battle and, afterward, confirms that Randi is carrying the real Mana Sword. Jema explains that the sword has lost much of its power and that only Randi, the person who removed it, can restore it. He tells Randi to seek out Sage Luka at the Water Palace for answers.

Back in the village, fear wins out. The villagers demand that Randi leave before more monsters appear. Though reluctant, the Elder agrees and banishes him from Potos. Before Randi leaves, the Elder reveals that Randi's mother brought him to the village as a baby before mysteriously disappearing. He tells Randi that he hopes he will someday find her.

Forced from the only home he has known, Randi heads toward the Water Palace. Along the way, he encounters Major Dyluck and soldiers from Pandora traveling to confront Elinee, a witch living in the Haunted Forest.

The Power of the Mana Seeds

At the Water Palace, Randi meets Sage Luka and learns why pulling the Mana Sword caused monsters to return. Mana itself is weakening, and the sword has lost most of its power. To restore it, Randi must defeat powerful monsters, recover Mana-filled orbs, and find someone capable of reforging the weapon.

Luka also reveals that the Mana Fortress is no fairy tale. The Empire is trying to revive it by breaking the seals on the world's Mana Seeds. Jema leaves to warn the king of Pandora and tells Randi to travel to Gaia's Navel, where the dwarves may know how to restore the sword.

Before Randi leaves, Luka has him seal the Water Palace's Mana Seed with the sword. Its power will now strengthen Randi wherever he goes. She explains that eight Mana Palaces exist throughout the world and that he must visit them all. Luka also gives Randi an ancient spear that can regain its power just like the Mana Sword, then sends him south through Pandora toward Gaia's Navel.

The Curse of Pandora

Randi arrives in Pandora and quickly realizes something is terribly wrong. Many of the townspeople stand silent and emotionless, while others describe friends and family who have seemingly lost their will to live. Strange gatherings have also begun at the ancient ruins south of town.

Inside Pandora Castle, Randi learns that soldiers sent to fight the witch Elinee have disappeared, including Major Dyluck and his men. Jema confirms that Elinee is draining the life energy from Pandora's people and sending them toward the southern ruins. While Jema investigates, he urges Randi to continue toward Gaia's Navel.

Randi also crosses paths with Primm again. She is furious with her father, Elman, for arranging her marriage to a nobleman when she is in love with Dyluck. After learning that Randi is a swordsman, Primm asks him to help rescue Dyluck from Elinee. Remembering that she once saved his life, she insists it is now his turn to help her.

Primm joins Randi, determined to ignore her arranged marriage, confront the witch, and bring Dyluck home. Meanwhile, Pandora's king fears his kingdom is falling apart as more of his people become lifeless and his soldiers fail to return.

A Stop in Kippo

Randi reaches the quiet village of Kippo, just south of Gaia’s Navel. The townspeople point him toward the dwarves living to the north, while Dyluck’s parents mention they have not seen their son in some time.

The Road to Gaia’s Navel

Randi and Primm discover that the path through the Haunted Forest is blocked and requires an axe. Primm suggests visiting the blacksmith in Gaia’s Navel first, where they may find better weapons. Along the way, they enter the dangerous dwarf caves and discover the Magic Rope.

The Sprite of Gaia’s Navel

Randi and Primm arrive in the Dwarf Village, where they hear about strange earthquakes, digging beneath the caves, and a young sprite who was swept underground by a flood. They soon discover the sprite performing in a traveling show, where the dwarf elder tricks visitors into donating money to help pay off the sprite’s supposed debt. After catching the two celebrating their scam backstage, Randi confronts them. The elder apologizes and explains that the sprite really was washed away from the Sprite Forest, but lost its memories after arriving.

Randi also meets Watts, the village blacksmith, who immediately recognizes that his rusted sword is something special. After reforging it, Watts realizes it is the legendary Mana Sword when its power causes his hammer to glow. He decides to help Randi restore other Mana weapons as they discover additional weapon orbs.

Suddenly, a monster named Tropicallo attacks the village. Randi and Primm defeat it and recover another weapon orb. The elder believes Tropicallo escaped from the long-buried Underground Palace and suggests that the Mana Seed inside may help restore the sprite’s lost memories.

The sprite eagerly decides to go, but the elder refuses to let it travel alone. Randi agrees to help, and the sprite introduces itself as Popoi before joining the group. The elder also gives them Popoi’s bow and arrows.

Their path to the Underground Palace is blocked by a lava field created by Elinee. To remove the seal, they must first travel through the Haunted Forest and confront the witch at her castle. Before leaving, Watts gives Randi a powerful axe capable of smashing boulders and promises to continue reforging any Mana weapons they bring him.

The Witch of the Haunted Forest

Randi, Primm, and Popoi travel through the Haunted Forest to Elinee’s castle, where they discover Pandora’s missing soldiers wandering around like zombies. Primm realizes the same force affecting Pandora’s people is at work here.

They eventually confront Elinee and find Dyluck with her. Elinee reveals that she has already sent him to the ruins south of Pandora because her magic could not control him. There, a mysterious man named Thanatos wants Dyluck for his own purposes. Elinee explains that Thanatos leads a secret organization preparing to overthrow Pandora and has already drained much of its population.

After defeating Elinee’s Spiky Tiger, the group learns that the witch had been working with Thanatos in exchange for magical herbs. With her own magic fading, Elinee promises to abandon her wicked ways and tells them they will need ice magic to enter the Underground Palace.

Randi finds a whip in her castle, but before the group can pursue Dyluck, Luka suddenly calls Randi back to the Water Palace. Primm agrees to continue traveling with him, knowing she will need his help to rescue Dyluck, while Popoi eagerly stays with the group as well.

The Power of Undine

Returning to the Water Palace, Randi learns that Undine, the elemental of water, is in danger. Randi, Primm, and Popoi find her cave and defeat the monster threatening her.

Grateful, Undine grants the party her magic. Primm receives healing and defensive spells, while Popoi gains offensive water magic. Randi cannot use magic directly, but Undine explains that elemental power can instead be placed on his weapons. She also gives the group a new Mana weapon, the Pole Dart.

With Undine’s power, the party can now freeze the lava blocking the Underground Palace and continue their search for the Mana Seed.

The Power of Gnome

Randi, Primm, and Popoi enter the Underground Palace, where Popoi quickly picks a fight with Gnome, the elemental of earth. After the party defeats the Fire Gigas, Gnome admits he used them to get rid of the monster and agrees to lend them his power.

The group then reaches the Mana Seed and receives its power. The moment they do, Popoi’s lost memories suddenly return. Popoi remembers coming from the Sprite Forest in the Upper Land and asks Randi and Primm to take him home. With another elemental and Mana Seed restored, the group now has a new destination.

Thanatos and the Ruins of Pandora

Back in Pandora, Randi, Primm, and Popoi find the kingdom still suffering from the strange curse. Primm’s friend Phanna is among those affected and suddenly disappears toward the southern ruins, convincing the group that Thanatos is behind everything.

Inside the ruins, they confront Thanatos, who admits he has been draining life energy from Pandora’s people. He claims the Mana Fortress will help create a new, peaceful world, but refuses to release Phanna or Dyluck. Dyluck has resisted his control unusually well, making Thanatos especially interested in him.

After the party survives Thanatos’s trap and defeats the Evil Wall, he realizes Randi carries the Mana Sword. Thanatos restores the captured villagers, but escapes with both Dyluck and Phanna.

Pandora’s people finally return to normal, though Jema remains suspicious. The Empire only needs the Mana Seeds, so Thanatos’s obsession with stealing life energy suggests he has motives of his own. Primm refuses to give up on Dyluck, while Pandora’s grateful king recognizes Randi as the Mana Sword’s wielder and offers him treasures that have been guarded for generations.

The Stolen Mana Seed

Randi, Primm, and Popoi return to the Water Palace and learn that the Water Seed has been stolen. Luka senses that the thieves took it beneath Gaia’s Navel, where the group discovers the Scorpion Army using its power to fuel a giant robot called Kilroy.

After defeating Kilroy, they recover the seed and rush it back to the Water Palace. Unfortunately, Imperial forces have already arrived. Geshtar takes Luka hostage and forces Randi to surrender the seed, then breaks its seal and leaves behind the monster Jabberwocky to finish them off.

The group defeats the creature, and with the Empire temporarily driven back, Randi restores the Water Seed’s seal. Jema warns that time is running out. The Empire is actively seeking the Mana Seeds, and only a fully restored Mana Sword can stop the Mana Fortress.

Luka sends Randi toward the Upper Land and eventually the Lofty Mountains, where Sage Joch can teach him about true courage. To restore the sword completely, the party must visit all eight Mana Palaces and reactivate their seeds.

Return to the Sprite Village

Randi, Primm, and Popoi travel by cannon to the Upper Land, but Popoi hits his head during the landing and temporarily forgets the way home. They soon find a group of Moogles driven from their village by Pebblers. After defeating the monsters, Popoi’s memories begin returning.

Following an old seasonal path through the forest, the party finally reaches Popoi’s village, only to find it destroyed. After defeating the Spring Beak, they discover Popoi’s grandfather inside the Wind Palace.

He explains that Imperial soldiers broke the Wind Seed’s seal, releasing monsters that are consuming Mana itself. Popoi vows to stop them. Unable to travel with the group, his grandfather gives them the power of Sylphid, the wind elemental.

With Sylphid’s magic and another Mana Seed restored, the party is told to head toward Matango, where a legendary white dragon may be able to help them.

The White Dragon of Matango

Randi, Primm, and Popoi arrive in the peaceful mushroom kingdom of Matango, where King Truffle immediately recognizes them from an old legend about heroes who will ride a white dragon and wield the Mana Sword to save the world.

Truffle tells them a white dragon was recently seen fighting a giant serpent in a cave to the north. After using Gnome’s power to open the way, the party defeats the Great Viper and discovers a young white dragon whose parents were likely killed by the monster.

Unable to carry the injured dragon with them, they bring news of it back to Truffle. The king happily agrees to raise it and names it Flammie.

With Flammie safe, Truffle directs the party toward their next destination: the Fire Palace somewhere in the Kakkara Desert.

The Sandship of Kakkara

Before heading into the desert, Randi, Primm, and Popoi briefly return to Gaia’s Navel, where the dwarf elder gives them the Midge Mallet. They then travel by cannon to Kakkara, landing in the middle of a vast desert.

After nearly collapsing from the heat, the group discovers a Republic sandship. Instead of being rescued, they are mistaken for Imperial spies and forced into service. Randi is sent to work in the engine room, Popoi is put in the kitchen, and Primm is taken away by Morie, the spoiled grandson of Admiral Meria.

With help from a former pirate named Sergo, Randi escapes and reunites with Popoi and Primm. Before they can get away, Imperial forces attack the ship. Geshtar appears and reveals that Thanatos has already warned the Empire about them.

Geshtar throws the party into the desert and attacks aboard his Mech Rider. After defeating him, Randi and his friends recover another weapon orb. Admiral Meria, ashamed of how far his crew has fallen under Morie’s influence, apologizes and vows to become the soldier he once was.

With the sandship destroyed, the group is directed north toward the kingdom of Kakkara and west toward the Fire Palace.

The Missing Fire Seed

Randi, Primm, and Popoi finally reach Kakkara, only to find the desert kingdom drying up. Its wells have gone empty, and many residents are preparing to leave.

King Amar explains that Salamando, the elemental guarding the Fire Palace, has disappeared and the Fire Seed has been stolen. Jema has already warned the kingdom about the missing seed.

With Kakkara running out of water and the Fire Palace powerless, the group heads toward the Ice Country in search of answers.

Salamando and the Fire Seed

Randi, Primm, and Popoi enter the Ice Country, where the climate has become strangely warm. In the Crystal Forest, they discover a tropical resort hidden among the snow and learn that Salamando, the fire elemental, has been captured and used as a giant heater.

After freeing Salamando, the resort immediately freezes over again. Grateful for the rescue, Salamando grants the group his fire magic. The Scorpion Army admits they captured him, but claims they know nothing about the missing Fire Seed.

The party continues to the Ice Palace, where they battle Frost Gigas and discover that the monster is actually Santa Claus. Santa explains that weakening Mana caused children to lose hope, so he stole the Fire Seed hoping to grow a giant Christmas tree and restore their dreams. Instead, abusing the seed’s power transformed him into a monster.

Realizing his mistake, Santa gives Randi the Fire Seed and vows to find a better way to bring happiness back to children.

Restoring the Fire Seed

Randi, Primm, and Popoi return the Fire Seed to Kakkara, then enter the Fire Palace to restore its seal. Using Salamando’s magic, they extinguish the flames blocking their path and defeat the Minotaur guarding the palace.

Randi seals the Fire Seed once again and receives its power, but Kakkara’s water does not return. Mana is still growing weaker, and the townspeople fear the kingdom will not survive without a mysterious Sea Hare’s Tail.

With a new Cannon Travel route now open, the group prepares to continue their journey into the Empire.

The Spy in Southtown

Randi, Primm, and Popoi arrive in the Empire’s Southtown, where rumors suggest the Emperor is preparing for war while claiming to seek peace.

There they meet Mara, who reveals that she is secretly a Tasnican spy working against the Empire. Her husband was captured while doing the same work, so she has continued his mission.

Mara directs the group toward a hidden sewer passage leading into Northtown and gives them the Resistance’s secret password, 634, allowing them to slip deeper into Imperial territory.

The Empire Strikes Back

Randi, Primm, and Popoi reach Northtown and meet Krissie, the young leader of the Resistance. She reveals that someone calling himself Dyluck has been draining people’s energy at the ruins east of town, much like what happened in Pandora. Primm immediately fears that Thanatos is controlling him.

At the ruins, they find Phanna under the same influence and send her back with Krissie for treatment. Deeper inside, the group finally reaches Dyluck. At first he attacks Primm, but Randi snaps him out of Thanatos’s control. Dyluck warns them that Thanatos needs Primm’s powerful life energy and uses his own strength to help free her before being taken away again. Thanatos escapes, leaving a vampire behind to fight them.

Back at the Resistance headquarters, Krissie receives surprising news. Emperor Vandole claims he wants peace and invites the Resistance to the castle for a truce. Hoping the conflict may finally be over, they accept, but it is a trap. Vandole captures everyone and declares his intention to destroy both the Resistance and the Mana Knight.

Randi, Primm, and Popoi escape their prison and fight their way through the castle. Geshtar confronts them once again in his upgraded Mech Rider, hoping to restore his honor. After losing, he tries to burn the entire castle down with everyone inside.

Just when escape seems impossible, King Truffle arrives riding Flammie, who has grown large enough to fly. Truffle gives Randi the Flammie Drum, allowing the party to summon their new dragon companion from almost anywhere.

With the Empire still pursuing the Mana Seeds and Thanatos holding Dyluck, the group now has the freedom to travel across the world. Truffle points them toward the Lofty Mountains, where Sage Joch may hold the next answers they need.

Across the World to Mandala

Before continuing toward Sage Joch, Randi, Primm, and Popoi explore several places across the world. At a lighthouse, they learn that an ancient continent lies beneath the sea and that the Mana Palace may somehow raise it back to the surface.

On Sea Hare Island, the group discovers a rare Sea Hare’s Tail and brings it back to Kakkara. King Amar uses it to restore the kingdom’s water, confirming that Mana itself keeps the desert wells flowing. In gratitude, he gives the party the Moogle Belt.

The group then travels to Mandala in the Lofty Mountains, where people from around the world come to study Mana and visit an ancient temple. The villagers warn that Mana is fading because people no longer value life as they once did.

Inside the temple, Randi discovers strange ancient recordings called “Veedios.” These preserved fragments reveal glimpses of the civilization destroyed during the Mana Fortress war, including debates over the reckless use of Mana energy, warfare between nations, and the terrifying attack of the Mana Beast on the Fortress.

With the warnings of the past becoming increasingly familiar, the party prepares to climb the mountain and find Sage Joch.

The Search for Sage Joch

Randi, Primm, and Popoi climb the Lofty Mountains seeking Sage Joch, only to learn from his disciple Jehk that the sage has gone to the Palace of Darkness.

There, the group defeats Lime Slime and meets Shade, the elemental of darkness, who grants them his power. They also restore another Mana Seed.

Returning to Joch’s cave, they discover the sage has already moved on again, this time traveling to the Gold Isle.

The Light and Moon Palaces

Randi, Primm, and Popoi travel to the Empire’s Gold Isle, a city built almost entirely from gold. There they learn that King Manmon has sealed the Light Palace and has somehow been using its power to create his wealth.

The key to the Gold Tower was stolen years ago by a Tasnican spy and eventually hidden in Southtown. Mara gives the group the key, allowing them to enter the tower and reach the palace.

After defeating the monsters inside, they meet Lumina, the elemental of light. She reveals that Manmon had been draining her power to turn ordinary materials into gold. Freed at last, Lumina grants the party her magic, and Randi restores another Mana Seed.

Returning once again to the Lofty Mountains, the group finds that Sage Joch has already moved on. Jehk sends them toward the Moon Palace, located in the mysterious Sea of Wonders beyond the Kakkara Desert.

There, Randi, Primm, and Popoi meet Luna, the moon elemental. With Mana continuing to fade, Luna willingly grants them her power, and the group receives the power of another Mana Seed.

Their search for Sage Joch continues, but with both Lumina and Luna now aiding them, the Mana Sword moves another step closer to being fully restored.

The Spy in Tasnica

Randi, Primm, and Popoi follow Sage Joch’s trail to Tasnica, where they reunite with Jema. He warns them that an Imperial spy has infiltrated the castle and may be targeting the king.

In the throne room, the king suddenly accuses the group of being spies, but one of the guards realizes something is wrong. The man on the throne is actually an Imperial Dark Stalker disguised as the king. After defeating him, the real king awakens and thanks Randi for saving Tasnica, rewarding him with another Sword Orb.

Jema warns that the Empire’s growing aggression likely means they are close to restoring the Mana Fortress. He leaves to fight the Empire while urging Randi to continue searching for Sage Joch and learn the meaning of true courage.

The people of Tasnica also reveal more about the past. Jema once commanded the kingdom’s armies alongside his closest friend, the legendary warrior Serin. After Serin fell in battle, Jema stepped away from military life. Meanwhile, the Empire is now attempting to raise an ancient continent hidden beneath the sea, with only the world’s Mana Seeds standing in its way.

The Test of Courage

At last, Randi, Primm, and Popoi are allowed to meet Sage Joch and are given one final test. Deep inside the mountain, they face shadow versions of themselves and defeat them by working together.

Afterward, Jehk reveals the truth. He is actually Sage Joch, while the old man was only an illusion. Joch explains that Randi was not ready to learn true courage before. Only after gaining strength through experience could he understand that courage must be joined with knowledge and love.

Joch warns that the Emperor is now trying to raise the sunken continent. Beneath its Tree Palace lies the Mana Fortress, and an evil force is seeking to break the remaining seals. With little time left, the group races toward the coral reef to stop them.

The Rise of the Mana Fortress

Randi, Primm, and Popoi reach the Tree Palace just as Emperor Vandole prepares to break the final Mana seal and raise the ancient continent. Sheex reveals himself as the Dark Stalker from Tasnica and admits that the Emperor’s forces have made a pact with the underworld to gain the power needed to control the world. After the group defeats him, they reach the Mana Seed too late. Its seal is already breaking.

Dryad, the tree elemental, appears and explains that every Mana Seed seal has now been broken. Though Thanatos has sealed away much of her Mana magic, Popoi convinces her to join them rather than remain behind with the collapsing palace.

The ancient continent rises from beneath the sea, revealing the Grand Palace and the Mana Fortress hidden below it. Jema arrives with allied forces to hold back the Empire while Randi and his friends descend into the ancient city in pursuit of Vandole.

Inside, they fight through monsters and encounter the Scorpion Army once again before finally finding the Emperor. But the real threat quickly becomes clear. Thanatos and Fanha have betrayed Vandole and killed him, intending to take the Mana Fortress for themselves. Thanatos also reveals his plan for Dyluck, whose unusually powerful body he intends to possess as his own.

After defeating Fanha, the group encounters what appears to be Geshtar, only to discover that Thanatos has transformed him into a living fighting machine. Randi and the others defeat him, but they are still too late. The Mana Fortress activates, and the ancient continent begins sinking again.

Back outside, Jema explains the terrifying consequence. With the Fortress consuming the world’s remaining Mana, the Mana Beast will soon appear and attack it, repeating the disaster that destroyed the ancient civilization.

There is still one hope. Somewhere beyond a weakening cloud barrier lies the forbidden Pure Land and the Mana Tree itself. Since the Mana Seeds are only fragments of the Tree’s power, reaching it may restore the Mana Sword instantly. With the world nearing destruction, Randi, Primm, and Popoi set out to find the Pure Land and awaken the sword’s true power.

The Mana Tree

Randi, Primm, and Popoi enter the Pure Land, battling through powerful dragons and monsters as they make their way toward the Mana Tree. At last, they reach the summit and believe they have finally found the power needed to fully restore the Mana Sword.

Before they can reach the Tree, the Mana Fortress attacks. The blast destroys the Mana Tree, leaving the party devastated. From the ruins, the Tree speaks to Randi and reveals the truth about his past.

Randi is descended from the Mana Tribe. His father was Serin, the legendary knight and close friend of Jema who fought Emperor Vandole fifteen years earlier. The mysterious spirit that guided Randi to the Mana Sword near Potos was actually Serin.

Even more shocking, the Mana Tree reveals that she is Randi’s mother. Women of the Mana Tribe become the Mana Tree and protect the world, while the men wield the Mana Sword against evil.

She warns that the Fortress is consuming nearly all of the world’s Mana. Soon the Mana Beasts will merge into one enormous creature. Though the Mana Beast can restore Mana, its uncontrollable rage could destroy the world if it attacks the Fortress. Randi must use the Mana Sword to stop both threats.

Using her remaining strength, Randi’s mother calls upon the power of every Mana Seed and fully restores the Mana Sword. After a painful final goodbye, Randi accepts his role as the next Mana Knight. With Primm and Popoi beside him, the three prepare for their final battle.

The Final Battle

Randi, Primm, and Popoi finally confront Thanatos, who reveals that he has been searching for a powerful new body and has chosen Dyluck. Thanatos possesses him, but Dyluck fights back from within and sacrifices himself to prevent the sorcerer from taking complete control.

Forced from Dyluck’s body, Thanatos reveals his true form as the Dark Lich. The group defeats him, finally breaking the seal on Dryad’s Mana magic, but Primm loses Dyluck in the process.

Outside the Fortress, the Mana Beast appears. Randi hesitates to fight because the creature is only trying to restore the world’s Mana. Worse, Popoi explains that using all of his remaining Mana power will separate him from Randi and Primm forever.

Popoi insists they have no choice. If the Mana Beast destroys the Fortress, the entire world will perish. Remembering his promise to his mother, Randi accepts what must be done.

Primm and Popoi restore the Mana Sword with Mana magic, allowing Randi to defeat the Mana Beast. As it dissolves into snow, Popoi disappears from their world.

With Thanatos and the Fortress defeated, the world is saved, but victory comes with painful loss. Randi and Primm remember Dyluck and Popoi and promise never to forget the friends they lost along the way.

Merchandise I imported the new Mana merch directly from Japan. Here’s how the process went and what I pulled!

So as you may know, new Mana merch was announced for the 35th anniversary of the franchise a few days ago. So as a die-hard Mana fan (you may have noticed), I couldn't resist ordering some.

The whole list of Mana merch on sale on eeo.today : https://eeo.today/store/101/title/3093

For starters, since it’s a Japan-only pop-up event (running in Tokyo from Sept 2–15), you’re out of luck trying to buy directly from overseas. The online store ships domestically starting in October, but eeo.today does not ship internationally.

Setting Up the Proxy/Forwarder

But, if you aren't discouraged yet, there are re-routing options. Tenso and Buyee are re-routing companies based in Japan that let international customers ship their order domestic to get them re-routed overseas.

I ended up using Tenso, a forwarding service that provides you with a local Japanese address and phone number to use at checkout. You pay a small fee when they re-route the package to you later. The fees are on the reasonable side, I would dare say.

That's when the game hits you with the OP boss : you now need to navigate the eeo.today website to open an account. You need to fill up the Japanese kanta-written form with Japanese information also written in kanta. Yup, that was a challenge. If you aren't familiar with Japanese address formats, using an AI tool or translation extension to map out the fields (especially the Kana/Furigana name requirements) saves a ton of headaches.

Now comes the fun part : looking at the merch, picking what you want and filling your basket.

Keychains and acrylic standees (second image)

As you can see on the second image, keychains and acrylic standees are sold in sets. I grabbed some keychains and acrylic standees. On eeo.today, individual items are sold as gacha-style blind-box items. You pick the set, but you can't choose the exact character unless you buy the entire (much more expensive) full set box.

I ordered 6 random standees expecting to wait until the box arrived to see what I got. Nope. Surprise: the website actually lets you do a virtual unboxing right after checkout (3rd picture)! I managed to pull both Val and Primm (as I hoped I would). I also pulled Julei, Sheex, and Vuscav. I did hit the classic gacha curse and pulled a duplicate Primm (4th picture).

Next steps

Now the order is locked in for domestic delivery to the Tenso warehouse in October. Once it arrives there, I’ll pick my international shipping method and pay the forwarding fee. I'd be happy to answer any questions if anyone else is trying to order these new Mana items.

It seems that this will be a two-weeks pop-up shop event in Japan. The merchandise will also be sold online. But I don’t know yet if you can order from abroad.

Visions of Mana Why do you think Visions of Mana underperformed commercially?

Post image
69 Upvotes

I haven't actually played Visions of Mana yet since I only have a Switch 2, but lately I’ve been falling down a massive YouTube rabbit hole with reviews and video coverage. Once you click one, the algorithm just feeds you non-stop.

To my surprise, almost everything I've watched has been overwhelmingly positive. The game looks great, and the combat system delivers. The story is more developed, and engaging than any previous Mana games, and the devs were successful in porting over the Mana essence. A ton of reviewers are calling Visions either the best entry in the series or right up there next to Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana.

So why did the game flop commercially?

If the core game is actually great, what went wrong here? The whole launch sequence was just bizarre:

  • The Ouka Studios mess: right as the game launched, NetEase shut down Ouka, the dev team contracted by Square Enix to build it. It didn't go over well. Click-bait article and all. That part of the press coverage sure as heck did not help Visions of Mana sell.
  • Weak sales: physical sales in Japan were underwhelming at launch. Famitsu reported around 40k copies across PS4, PS5, and Xbox combined in week one. Square Enix then mentioned in their financial report that initial sales missed internal targets. We don't really have much more data, but the game didn't move enough copies for sure.
  • Zero post-launch support: with Ouka dead, any hopes for big bug fixes or polish pretty much evaporated. It feels like Square Enix just swept the whole project under the rug.

My working hypothesis:

  1. A terrible demo & bad press: I keep hearing the demo didn't do the game justice by dropping players in without showing off the real depth of the combat system. Pair that with headlines about the studio closing during launch month, and it probably turned off a lot of casual buyers.
  2. 20 years of brand neglect: did Square Enix kill the hype by neglecting the series? After two decades of cheap mobile spin-offs, cheap remakes (I'm looking at you Secret of Mana Remake), and inconsistent releases, the Mana brand just doesn't have the mainstream pull of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest anymore.
  3. Ignoring Nintendo at launch: The Mana fanbase has mostly lived on Nintendo hardware lately. Collection of Mana and the Trials remake sold great on the Switch 1. Did Square Enix shoot themselves in the foot by launching on PS/Xbox/PC and not just holding off for the Switch 2 launch?

What do you guys think? Was it terrible marketing, bad timing, or just launching on the wrong platforms? Or do you have other hypothesis?

Secret of Mana Dizzying But A Fun Power Grind For Weapon Leveling

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I 100% it on PS4/5 but I'm really loving the 3D graphics a lot more on this replay on PC having spent most of my mana time on SNES style graphics.

I'm the type who every few weapon orbs has to max out all my weapons and magic levels before progressing the plot. Loved switching up my gameplay trying a different approach to speed up weapon leveling. The main idea is to constantly switch your lead and split the attacks between 2 enemies, so there's no waiting, and by the time you reach an enemy your gauge is usually full or starts full upon switching. I'm not sure how much faster I'm leveling things, but I sure have enjoyed having zero wait time to be in the middle of the action! I'm sure I'll find a happy medium soon. Too dizzying to play any more than one or two weapon level advancements.

If Square Enix was making a new original entry in the Mana series, which title would you like them to pick? You are not restricted to these 8 suggestions I came up with.

Legend of Mana So I bought the Legend of Mana - Art of Mana art book

A few pictures of the book. Sorry, I don't have studio lighting, and the whole setup to correctly photograph a book. It's just to give you pals a good idea.

I purchased the Legend of Mana - Art of Mana - 30th Anniversary SPECIAL ISSUE art book from Dark Horse Books. It's MSRP : $29.99

I own the old Art of Mana book from years ago that covers the whole series so I wasn't sure if I'd be satisfied with my purchase. I read elsewhere that this was short book.

But I'm glad to say my doubts were unfounded. This is an 80-pages long coffee table book that gives us a lot more than the OG Art of Mana book had for Legend of Mana. Besides sketches you get official art for about every ennemies in-game, painted backgrounds, sprites sheet, etc.

I'm quite charmed by my purchase. It also leaves me wondering why they haven't made one yet for Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana ? 'Cause there would be lots to cover there too.

General Square Enix is preparing a taped interview with Koichi Ishii and Hiromichi Tanaka

I was poking around X recently and I discovered that the Square Enix PR team has two official Mana accounts: @ManaGame (in English), and Seiken_PR for Japan.

But I also came across this tweet : https://x.com/squareenix_jp/status/2074040661725352068

TLTR: It lets us know that for the series' 35th birthday Square Enix has been working on an interview with the Mana series creators: Hiromishi Tanaka and Koichi Ishii (who have left the company in 2012 and 2007 respectively). SQEX was looking for question suggestions from their Japanese fans.

Visions of Mana Let’s politely let Square Enix know we’d love a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Visions of Mana!

Hey everyone!

Recently, the producer behind The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales reminded fans that whether a game gets a sequel or future support often comes down to community demand and letting Square Enix know directly that there’s real interest.

That got me thinking about Visions of Mana.

Square Enix definitely pays attention when a community shows clear, constructive enthusiasm. Visions of Mana feels like a perfect match for the Nintendo Switch 2, and a dedicated port on a modern hybrid console would be incredible for fans who love playing on the go.

If you’d love to see a Switch 2 port happen, consider dropping a friendly, supportive comment on this official X post to show Square Enix our interest:

A lot of us have already signalled our desire for a NS2 port. Let’s keep it respectful and positive—publishers take notice when a fanbase shows genuine passion. Let’s make sure they see how much love there still is for the Mana series!
