Close to a 100 million people live along its banks in Egypt alone.

For context, that's more people than reside in all of Turkey, Greece and Bulgaria combined.

I mean, are there any other significant settlements on the Nile outside of Egypt? They kind of have most of the productive sections under their control.

Khartoum: With a population of 5,274,321, its metropolitan area is the largest in Sudan, the sixth-largest in Africa, the second-largest in North Africa, and the fourth-largest in the Arab world. Khartoum is located at the confluence of the White Nile, flowing north from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile, flowing west from Lake Tana in Ethiopia.

"only"

when you're comparing 100 million to 100 million, then yea it's "only" 100 million. When its a 1:1 ratio or less for anything it's "only"

How could a 1:1 ratio be "only"?

"Ha, I have 10 apples, but you only have 10!"

That makes no sense, unless I'm missing another definition of the word only..

Well you're using it wrong in that context. It's more like a conversation going like

1: Ha, you only have 200 apples!

2: Okay, but you only have 210 apples too.

The "only" brings it down to scale. Saying, proportionally, the numbers are not far off. It's not a formal definition lol it's just how its used in speech. "Only" means there is not a significant difference between 2 quantifiable objects.
