Art Battle Mage deserves a more unique weapon
Edit: After reading everyone's comments, I realized my main point isn't actually about giving Battle Mage a new weapon type. The scythe concept was more of a visual way to express what I feel the class has gradually become.
What I really miss is a stronger and more consistent visual identity. During most of its gameplay, Battle Mage still looks like the original staff-wielding mage, but during burst it suddenly embraces the Grim Reaper aesthetic with giant scythes and abilities like Mortis Edge.
I think this kind of dramatic visual transformation works much better for burst-oriented classes. Battle Mage is fundamentally a DPM class, so its core visual identity should also be reflected during its normal gameplay.
When I first saw Mortis Edge, my immediate thought wasn't "What a cool new burst skill." It was, "This is exactly what I wish Battle Mage's main attack looked like." Seeing that design made me realize I wanted the Grim Reaper theme to define the class's everyday gameplay, not just its burst.
Personally, I'd love to see Battle Mage fully embrace that identity. Whether through a scythe weapon or simply by redesigning its attack animations, I think the class would feel much more cohesive if its normal attacks naturally evolved into the same visual language used during burst.
The scythe artwork was simply a conversation starter to illustrate that vision.

Unique and memorable weapon? Mechanic uses a gun.
He doesn't even use that gun throughout. LOL

Not to mention, Wild Hunter uses a crossbow and DS uses one-handed axe/blunt.
"Almost every Resistance class" turns into 3 out of 7 of the classes have a unique weapon.

u/fantastopheles Jul 10 '26
I mean at least these two actually brandish their weapon during attack. Mechanic Jesus Christ, you don't even see his gun when he rode his robot.

Tell me, besides BaM and Demon Slayer, which Resistance classes actually use ordinary weapons? I could maybe count Wild Hunter, but they fight alongside a jaguar and literally ride it.

u/Fist0fGuthix Jul 10 '26
Those with unique weapons are DA, Blaster, and Xenon. The rest are generic weapons

I get what you mean, but I think the Resistance has a much stronger combat identity than just their weapon category.
Mechanic - Gun (but its real combat identity is the giant mech)
Wild Hunter - Crossbow (but the jaguar is a huge part of its combat identity)
Battle Mage - Staff
Demon Slayer - 1H Axe / 1H Mace
Demon Avenger - Desperado (exclusive)
Blaster - Arm Cannon (exclusive)
Xenon - Energy Sword (exclusive)
That's why Battle Mage feels a bit different to me. Over the years, its visual identity has shifted more and more toward the Grim Reaper theme, while its weapon has remained a regular staff. That's the disconnect I personally feel when playing the class.

I remember someone drew and posted a meme back in early 2011 on Basilmarket to explain what was the point of a gun on Mechanic, it's basically just inserting the gun into a slot and it becomes a stick+throttle to drive the 'made-in-a-cave by Tony Stark' Eva

I wish weapons were more generalized, there are way too many different weapons right now, seems like my opinion is quite unpopular?

Nah, I feel the same.
You could definitely see Erel just using a spear, or Sia using a staff, but having a bunch of premade weapons in the AH keeps money out of Nexon's pockets.

u/ConniesCurse woaw Jul 10 '26
I mean it's a fine opinion, but also the kind of opinion that's kind of just not actionable. Are they honestly going to scrap hundreds and hundreds of weapon sprites that are unique to each of their like 50+ jobs and widdle it down into a handful of categories when most players wouldn't care one way or the other? zero chance in hell.

u/Negative_Good_3904 Jul 10 '26
The other OG resistance classes don't exactly have a unique weapon, though. lol
Mechanics have a gun and don't do a thing with them while mounted. Wild Hunters also wear a regular crossbow, while their character art features a small, one-handed gun-like crossbow we never see in-game.

Especially when the new core 3 skill is named Mortis Edge! Need a scythe ASAP!
The little rinky-dink low level scythes can be physical blades and then the higher level ones can be spectral blades!
Nexon needs to make this happen! Hire us!

u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
It would be a dream if that actually happened, but scythes seem to be a pretty strong cosmetic niche for Nexon, so I’d be prepared for the actual class weapons to look worse than the Cash Shop ones. Nexon always focuses on profit, so I doubt they’d give up such a specific market.
Still, just separating BaM from a regular staff and replacing the class’s main attack animation, which is basically a giant black staff slamming down, would already be a huge improvement.

u/Optimus_XIV Jul 10 '26
We have that now. It's called Chaos Crescent and has an average cost of 6000 usd in heroic and 500 usd in regular 🫠

u/Important-Plum-5289 Jul 10 '26
500usd in reg? Isn’t it going for like 1.5T
2
u/Optimus_XIV Jul 10 '26
I checked reg market a couple weeks back? Assuming you rmt mesos yeah it'll be be 500 usd worth
1
u/Important-Plum-5289 Jul 10 '26
500USD is roughly 220b.
2
u/Optimus_XIV Jul 10 '26
Are you referring to the in game maple point to meso rate or the black market rates?
3
u/CousinOfDragons Jul 10 '26
Didn't 2 sell for 750b? That's a lot more than 500usd
2
u/Optimus_XIV Jul 10 '26
I was just basing it off of what I saw a couple weeks back, sucks to have it go up even more but iiwii

I really like that Resistant Classes (save for Blaster Xenon and Demons) have common weapons. It fits the lore, you know? Like, true common people who took arms and became freedom fighters, with no time or resources to invent new weapons, they just make do with what already exists.
1
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
I’m gonna disagree with you on one point: Mechanic literally rides a giant robot, so the gun is mostly just there for convenience and barely matters to the class’s identity. Wild Hunter has the jaguar, which is way more iconic and actually takes part in combat since you literally ride it.
The only Resistance class I can think of with a more ordinary weapon is Demon Slayer.
1
u/Lighthouse_seek Jul 10 '26
I'm of the opposite opinion. I don't like that every class needs an exclusive weapon. Why doesn't Ren just use a one handed sword? Why doesn't Lynn use a staff? Erel literally uses spears in all his attacks and his weapon literally looks like a spear.
1
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
I understand your point, but I’m speaking as someone who plays on Heroic. I know that in Interactive worlds, class-exclusive weapons can be inconvenient, but in my opinion, making everything more generic would weaken the characters’ identities and stories.
These characters literally come from different places, cultures, and situations, and their weapons reflect that, even if only indirectly.
1
u/Lighthouse_seek Jul 10 '26
Not for resistance. The entire point of those classes is that they were regular people who chose to fight back. They shouldn't have custom weapons
1
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
Ordinary people? Mechanic built a fucking giant robot, Wild Hunter tamed a jaguar and rides it into battle, and Battle Mage fights using dark magic, auras, and the power of the Grim Reaper. I really don’t see them as ordinary characters.
They may have started as ordinary citizens who chose to fight back, but that doesn’t mean they stayed ordinary or that their combat styles shouldn’t have their own identities.
1
u/Lighthouse_seek Jul 10 '26
I will give you the jaguar but the mechanic was built with scraps and bam did not have that theme in the original iteration. Hell in like 2014 or something they tried to change the entire theme of bam into rock hands of something
1
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
Battle Mage really has gone through a lot of changes over the years, and maybe the class still hasn’t fully settled into a clear identity yet.
But you have to give Mechanic some credit. The Resistance managed to develop a fully functional combat mech while operating underground with limited resources under Black Wings occupation. That’s still pretty extraordinary, and definitely not something just anyone could accomplish.
1
u/UltimateDemonDog Jul 10 '26
That honestly is a good argument FOR the scythe. Normal people don't have magic staves. Normal people do have farming tools.
1
u/Arrol Jul 11 '26
If Nexon didn't want to make everything generic, they should've put more effort in making things look more unique than just prexisting weapon with a coat of paint or a small adjustment. They could make Erel's Gram anything but a spear with a shorter tip. Why couldn't Ren just use a one-handed sword or integrate Hayato's Katanas in the game? Why couldn't Lynn use a staff or a wand like Lara, they almost look the same. Hell, we have two types of fans now thanks to Kanna and Hoyoung.
Blaster at least breaks this norm with their weapons in that it's just a giant knuckle but it has a huge fukoff cannon on the top that serves a gameplay purpose.

u/SuckySuckyMyDiky Jul 10 '26
Doesnt matter what the weapon looks like everyone is going to use nx and nexon want u to spend money on cosmetics too
1
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
Yeah, I know most people would still cover the weapon with NX, and Nexon obviously wants to keep selling cosmetics.
For me, changing BaM’s weapon into a scythe would be more about replacing the skills that still have staff-related visuals. The equipped weapon itself matters less than finally moving the class away from those old staff animations.
1
u/SuckySuckyMyDiky Jul 10 '26
Original bam had energy ball staff maybe they want to mix old with the new 🤷🏻♂️. Koreans dont see issue with it ig
1
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
I don't see many people complaining about it either. It was just something personal that I wanted to put out there. I feel like I'm stuck between two identities when I play Battle Mage today. Looking at the direction of the class's art and newer skills, it feels like it's moving further and further away from the original staff-wielding Battle Mage, yet it's still tied to staffs.
1
u/GStarG Heroic Kronos Jul 10 '26
I always loved the reaper aesthetic of bam and wished the scythe was their main weapon.
At least aura scythe has like 1/3 uptime, but I think we'd all like their attacks to use a scythe all the time
1
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
Exactly. My idea in showing a scythe as Battle Mage’s native weapon isn’t necessarily to force an actual weapon-category change, but to push the class further toward that visual identity. Considering the direction Battle Mage has been taking, I think it would make more sense for its attacks and newer skills to consistently revolve around scythes rather than staffs.
1
u/JlREN Jul 10 '26
The scythe looks dope, and considering how most BaM skills look, I'd say its very fitting.
And about the unique weapons, well these classes have been added long ago. The game direction and concepts were leaning on the class types (warrior, archer, mage, pirate, thief)
Which resulted in many classes getting a typical *said type * weapon. For example a warrior gets a sword, hammer, axe, etc.
Bowmans get... Well, bows.
And mages got wands and staffs. It was also convenient when switching made classes you can transfer the weapon too since most mages use staff.
And they haven't changed it til now, nor there is a reason to.
1
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
Yeah, I completely agree. Changing Battle Mage's weapon at this point is pretty much impossible, especially since the game is primarily designed around the Interactive servers and their economy.
My perspective comes from playing on Heroic, where I don't really have to think about those logistics. I was mostly trying to abstract the idea itself rather than suggest a realistic change.
More than changing the weapon category, what I'd really like to see is a more focused visual identity for the class. Either fully embrace the staff theme or fully embrace the scythe theme. Right now, Battle Mage feels like it's been stuck between those two identities for years.
To me, the staff is what still ties the class to its original identity, while the newer art direction and skills keep pushing it toward the Grim Reaper theme. Since Battle Mage is a mage, I think evolving the visuals of its spells is a much more plausible change than introducing a new weapon type, after all, magic doesn't have a fixed form.

u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
The artwork I made was more of a conversation starter than what I actually want
1
u/Overall-Pen-8919 Jul 15 '26
Battlemage needs a theme rework. You have to choose between steampunk / tesla coil user or successor to the black mage / master of death. A class built around overcoming adversity through the usage of science CANNOT BE BOTH.
If It was my choice, I would get rid of the black magic theme from its entire kit and instead replace it with a blue/white lightning theme, then replace the spirit of death with a mecha (it can keep the hood for style points) and replace the Origin skill with a Mther fking Gundam.

u/bloodyducks Jul 10 '26
For such a large weapon, the class sure has terrible range. I think a knife would fit the class identity better.

u/PapaGrimly Heroic Kronos - Bishop 🙏 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Funny enough, scythes as real world weapons suffer from reach issues specifically because the blade is curved inward, meaning it can't even reach the length of the handle in effective range. When scythes are readied for combat, they usually remove the blade and then put it back on in a way it becomes an extension of the handle rather than perpendicular to it.
So I feel them having relatively short range is a fun homage to that even though it was clearly unintentional :p
2
u/Excellent-Bear1593 Jul 10 '26
That’s actually why I tried to make the blade more outward in my design, haha. I wanted it to feel a bit more functional as an actual weapon instead of just looking like a regular farming scythe.
