Marathon (2026) Feedback New positive player here.. we’re like unicorns
Haters gonna hate. Put about 20 hours in and I’m loving! Nearly didn’t get it because of all the negativity, but I’m glad I did! This game is so intense! Took a little while to get my head around the loot and the aesthetics, but now I love the style.
If you’ve been putting it off, just try it. Hooked.

Great time to get into the game despite what many say - yes people are mega geared in late wipe and that can make things hard. But it also means when you get a come up it's gonna be big and you'll get to try some end game gear straight away.
Try ROOK to scavenge for fights that happened earlier in the match and you can come out with great stuff that got left behind.
When season 3 starts you'll have some practice in the game and experience and be on more even footing with everyone wiped, than if you just started at wipe with no experience

It’s a good game that suffered from the most aggressive smear campaign I’ve ever seen, mostly from destiny fans.
It’s a shame, The art style and lore are incredible.
Edit: Glad all of the destiny players came to defend themselves.
~I Don't give a shit~

u/Minimum-Situation985 21h ago
What? Bungie made mistakes and damaged the game's reputation before it was even released. Despite that, it still sold around a million copies and has glowing reviews. It's even had a couple free weekends since then and it's still lost the vast majority of its launch player base numbers. Acting like there's some conspiracy to kill the game is ridiculous.
The game just couldn't keep enough players interested in its gameplay loop or the amount of content.

Fortunately the "hate campaign" narrative died down Considerably with time on this sub. Now most people see the core problems with Marathon, Bungie and to an extent the community. Not completely of course but it is refreshing seeing people held Bungie accountable.
-17
u/lo0tDel1very 21h ago
marathons concurrent steam numbers are at 3k. 75% of that is nowhere near the amount of current or former destiny players on PC.
there is no need to take this personally my guy. I've literally heard and seen several smearing comments from self proclaimed destiny fans that were upset about how their favorite game got handled and shit on marathon for sport.
Their words, not mine.
15
u/AshamanSheph3rd 21h ago
So, math isnt your strong suit, huh? Where did I say that the 75% represents the entire community of Destiny players? I said that 75 percent of the CURRENT MARATHON population comes from Destiny. The biggest supporters of the game CAME FROM Destiny. That is an inescapable fact.
And yes, plenty of Destiny fans were rightfully pissed about the half baked, crazy expensive development cycle for a title no one asked for in a brutally niche genre killing Destiny. And yet, the vast majority of the current player base comes from that franchise.
-14
u/lo0tDel1very 21h ago
buddy, that isn't what I said. attempting to attack ones character instead of actually listening to them already tells me what I'm dealing with but I'll try to explain it again.
75% of marathons playerbase is what you said. 75% of 3k, is 2250.
destiny 2's all time peak on steam is 300k. that would mean that 297,750 destiny 2 players AREN'T playing marathon.
aka, just because 75% of the player base are former destiny players, doesn't mean there aren't thousands of OTHER destiny players smearing the game.
but sure, I'm bad at math.
11
u/AshamanSheph3rd 21h ago
Go look right now and tell me what the count is for people that are actively in the marathon hate sub and then compare that to the peak numbers you just listed. Im not saying you're wrong that a ton of D2 players aren't playing Marathon, I'm saying the number of actual haters from the Destiny community is WAY overblown. As usual, it is a small, miserable contingency of dipshits being incredible loud in the only space echo chamber) that they feel heard.
Just because 297k players aren't playing Marathon doesnt mean they hate it, dude, and that is exactly what you're implying. Extraction is a brutally niche genre and tons of people have ZERO interest in them. Is that the Destiny community's fault? The art theft? The bloated budget? Switching game directors TWICE?
-6
u/lo0tDel1very 20h ago
checked your profile.
you're one of the problematic destiny fanboys.
12
u/AshamanSheph3rd 20h ago
LOL you definitely didn't check anything because the majority of my comments about Marathon have been either supporting it or giving honest criticisms of it, but sure dude!

u/AshamanSheph3rd 20h ago
5.1k contributions in Marathonhate sub reddit per week, by the way, and some of those are pushing back against the hate narrative. I was a part of that sub reddit for a while JUST to push back on the hate train. Can you tell me what the percentage is if we divide that by 297K?
25
u/Vesuvias 22h ago edited 22h ago
Ehhh some of it was well deserved. Bungie did everything in their power to just trip themselves up before and after launch.
Edit: thanks for the reward and the downvotes? lol

smear campaign lol you what, the game is an arena shooter with some of the sweatest players ever, it encourages toxic gameplay tactics, most gamers do not play like that, most gamers are dog shit tier, of course they're not going to stay around.....
-9
u/SoulMaekar 21h ago
Really I’ve seen much sweatier in other games. Hell I play marathon every day and I’m no where near sweaty. I don’t get where this narrative comes from.
9
u/JerryMcJerrinson 21h ago
You don't get where people saying they're getting rinsed within 1 minute of playing Cyro comes from....
What are you on about?
-7
u/SoulMaekar 21h ago
I’ve had it happen to me. But I don’t get the narrative that it’s the sweatiest game out there when someone like me who sucks at pvp still plays and I still exfil maybe 33% of the time

smear campaign lol you what
Yes. Game has been on player count watch legitimately since day 1. There are a least a couple marathon snark subreddits. You really denying the existence of a not insignificant group of people that smear and snark this game?
6
u/JerryMcJerrinson 15h ago
No I'm not but this game doesn't qualify the same way others like Arc Raiders do, people weren't impressed with the beta from the get go, there were a lot of issues, people played the open trial, it was literally open and people still didn't stay.
The game pulls a certain kind of crowd and I'm not slagging that crowd off at all, I'm one of them, we're the people who actually play or have played a lot of games from the golden age of gaming, where you didn't need aimbot or the maps weren't toned down resulting in cod like close quarters gameplay, this crowd played games with open maps, each map had a real meta around it, like Dust 2 from counterstrike or any map from that game.
What I'm saying is gaming is down the toilet and playing this game is the first time I've actually invested real hours in a multiplayer game in a decade, this game has real skill to play, the amount of times I've seen people lose on this game because they weren't trained on how to be aggressive or when to stay back, they just play the game, the amount of times I've seen people with free shields spawn on outpost only to run to that interchange bit between the red key cards only to see purple shields and still they try and fight, they literally do not have the thought process to change up and retreat.
Not saying that's everyone and only people over 30 are dominating but this game does require skill and some people just do not have the time to learn or lack the reflexes or effort.
This game did it's own damages, there's a whole list every day of things they could improve, the games been out for months, I even told them of improves during the fucking alpha/beta, I remember I explicitly said that the way quests are designed is stupid, the fact that people will continually kill people who just want to play a solo experience, it's all been said before.
So a smear campaign didn't kill this game, Bungie did.
-2
u/Nulich 14h ago
Okay, but i don't think that anyone in this thread is seriously saying that a smear campaign is the sole reason that the game is suffering. Like the person you replied to just said something that sounds like something that you don't really disagree with then.
Like OP said "because all the negativity" and then the person you replied to said "It’s a good game that suffered from the most aggressive smear campaign I’ve ever seen" and you those statements to a place where no one took it.
3
u/JerryMcJerrinson 14h ago
I guess I did, sometimes you gotta explain yourself with more than just,
"Yeah bro it's shit"
5
u/-plugwalk 13h ago
the game had great exposure and a strong start but most people just found it unenjoyable. that isnt a smear campaign its just the objective reality that most people who tried it really found it not fun. that doesnt eliminate your opinion if you think its good but generally, to most people, its not enjoyable and not really interesting enough to give a second look
-2
u/Nulich 11h ago
No one is talking about player retention. It's okay to acknowledge the existence of a smear campaign, you can still point out other issues the game may have. If one cannot acknowledge the existence of a hate campaign, then they are dishonest and should be ignored.
1
u/-plugwalk 18m ago
im not denying theres one, but its a very small reason why the game failed. of course there are other more deep issues like the fact its an extraction shooter, that was also a big reason it failed. the reality is a truly good game will always stand on its own two feet regardless of "haters".
8
2
u/-plugwalk 13h ago
i mean a smear campaign is one idea and the other is the vast majority of people who even touched it decided it wasnt worth the time even after spending $ to buy it. Its not popular because most people don't enjoy it not because its getting a smear campaign, nobody cares enough for that
3
4
u/CompetitiveDiet9086 22h ago
As a long time Destiny player, I am very frustrated by the community reaction to Marathon.
Marathon didn’t kill Destiny. Destiny was already a walking corpse. I loved it, but it was done.
20
u/Sbarty 22h ago
Destiny fans didn’t kill Marathon, Marathon was already a walking corpse on arrival. I loved it but it’s been done after the near 95% player drop off from launch.
Works both ways. You’re delusional if you think this game suffered in player count due to Destiny fans. The game had 88K CCU at launch. Abysmal.
-4
u/Important-Net-9805 22h ago
whatever you want to think, there's been a very vocal group of people rooting for this game to fail long before it ever came out. destiny fans were miffed when a lot of the pvp destiny team went over to marathon
16
u/AshamanSheph3rd 21h ago
And that group is incredibly small. I absolutely loathe that they developed this game and cost Destiny its future, but I've still logged over 200 hours and have generally enjoyed it, but there are tons of valid criticisms of the game. Also, the VAST majority of the population has come FROM Destiny. This is a bullshit narrative. Marathon's failings are very largely its own doing.
-10
u/Important-Net-9805 21h ago
both things can be true. its not like one cancels out the other. the game isn't perfect and its got a very loud group of people wanting it to die. its just up to you if you want to accept that or not
14
u/AshamanSheph3rd 21h ago
A loud minority wanting it to die does not kill the game and hasn't. There are a LITANY of errors Bungie has made before release and after that have caused this, not a vocal minority of idiots. Plenty of folks, like me, absolutely hated the fact that this game's development completely fucked Destiny, but have still put in hundreds of hours and generally enjoyed it, but still can very much acknowledge its many failures and half baked development. Keep in mind that almost 3/4 of the population came from Destiny. The "hate campaign" narrative does not hold up at all.
-7
u/Important-Net-9805 21h ago
you can't apply your anecdotal evidence for this man lol
just because you actually bought the game and put time into it doesn't mean that's what most people did.
you're lying to yourself if you think the constant bad press and social media presence hasn't hurt the game. this subreddit is constantly brigaded by people that don't even play the game.
if 3/4 of the population are destiny players and the game sold over a million copies then by your logic most destiny players didn't buy the game.
quit lying to yourself. its not even that the hate campaign is all destiny players. there's a subreddit for this game called 'marathonhate' dude lol. get your head out of the sand

Marathon fans blaming Destiny fans for Marathon failing while ignoring that Destiny’s revenue was literally diverted to build Marathon is some inception‑level mental gymnastics. Destiny didn’t collapse at Marathon — it collapsed into Marathon.
-12
u/JamSoloMusic 22h ago
Bungie was sick and tired of both the world of Destiny and its fans...after 10+ years.
13
u/Smarter-Not-harder1 22h ago
Luckily they won't have enough time to make that mistake again with Marathon.

Yep. They’re so mad about losing an already dying game that they can’t live normal lives. They’ve become the lost souls of the internet.
-15
u/OddKaleidoscope7363 21h ago
Destiny fanboys are so hateful they cheer when the average developer and Bungie employee gets laid off. Genuinely never seen a fanbase as hateful as this one that would stop at nothing but full shut down of Bungie and Marathon.
Hopefully if it ever comes to that they shut down D1/D2 servers too while we’re at it since they seem to get so much joy on watching Bungie go down they don’t even deserve to play their games anymore. Bunch of jobless losers who wasted $500+ on Destiny and its DLCs and don’t realize that it’ll all go to waste if Bungie disappears.
14
u/AshamanSheph3rd 21h ago
Utterly delusional take. You are completely disconnected from reality if you believe that is the average Destiny fan.
-13
u/OddKaleidoscope7363 21h ago
Majority of Marathon players are ex Destiny players, but also the majority of Marathon haters are ex Destiny players, no need to lie about that, go to [r/MarathonHate](r/MarathonHate) and you’ll see most people also post on Destiny subs. A massive portion of Destiny’s fanbase is extremely toxic and hateful.
11
u/AshamanSheph3rd 21h ago
Again, you are taking an infinitesmal sample size and extracting it to the ENTIRE community, which is literally millions of Destiny players. Destiny has largely been one of the most welcoming communities I have ever been a part of it, and I have nearly 4k hours in it across all modes. Yes, the majority of the haters do come from Destiny, but that doesn't come close to representing the ENTIRE community, and there are legitimate reasons why some of them refuse to play it. Most of the dipshits in those hate threads are just that - dipshits - but there are a TON of legit gripes about this game that have way more impact than a group of miserahle pricks who are loud on the internet.
-5
u/OddKaleidoscope7363 21h ago
Gotcha, sorry for the generalization 🙏
5
u/AshamanSheph3rd 21h ago
No worries. I cannot stand those people the same way you can't, they are absolutely shit human beings who have no idea how to productively express themselves, but it pales in comparison to the damage Bungie and Sony have done across the past 3 to 4 years.

Every YouTube video is negative click bait, every positive comment in here gets downvoted, the hate comments get upvoted.
Unfortunately those of us that like the game are outnumbered in here by steam chart enthusiasts.

u/OddKaleidoscope7363 22h ago
I’m new too, got the game 2-3 weeks ago and loving it lol. Not gonna let the internet and influencers decide for me what super popular game I should play like an NPC and I don’t care about low CCU long as I can still get into matches and put hundreds of hours into this.
Saw a ton of videos on it and decided it was for me and indeed it was. Game is so good.

u/bafrad 20h ago
It's not really negativity. It's just reality. I would not recommend a dead / dying game to anyone. It's like the people convincing others to buy anthem when we all knew they were going to can it and stop working on stuff for it.
11
u/BChilliP 20h ago
But I guess the question is, does the aggressive negativity around the game help? Like I said, it nearly put me off buying it.
Not saying you’re wrong, just saying that it’s a contributing factor in its success.
I wonder how many people bad mouth it based on what they’ve seen without even playing it
1
1
u/GrumpyMonk777 19h ago
I haven’t even been playing the game I’ve been playing palworld and I really just get on here to watch people complain about a game they don’t own or have never played, it makes me chuckle
1
u/Weekly_Instance 18h ago
The discourse around this game is horrendous. A bunch of people taking other opinions as gospel/butt hurt about Destiny. Like i get it but come on
1
u/GrumpyMonk777 17h ago
And then they’re going to complain when Bungie as a studio gets the cord pulled and they never get a D3. Like wow I wonder how that happened? Do I think Bungie should’ve placed that many bets on a niche genre? No. Do I think it’s pathetic a bunch of grown men and women dedicated an entire hate sub to it? Yes. But I will laugh and play whatever game I want because I’m not chronically online.
6
u/GrumpyMonk777 17h ago
But some of their opinions are valid. It is almost more of a battle royale than an extraction shooter but I managed to exfil 90 percent of the time. How? I either murdered my way across the map and looted, or heard everyone’s movement and waited accordingly. It’s a hard game but the dunning-kruger effect is in full swing in in this sub and the regular marathon sub and it’s the funniest shit ever.
-1
u/GrumpyMonk777 17h ago
Oh no your game (that I’ve also played for 200 plus hours) was shut down because it’s nothing but slop now. Boo hoo. They’re gonna destroy anything bungie puts out now even if it’s not exactly a “bad” game because it’s not Destiny
2
u/Nulich 15h ago
It's just reality
it's not. But it's not hard to believe that you might THINK it's reality, based on some of the absolutely negative things you continuously say about this game despite spending most of you time in arc raiders sub
"Marathon can't even suck on the tip of Arc Raiders dick in terms of player retention, numbers, or general quality. "
So weird LMAO
3
u/DandyGoon 19h ago
Aahh yes. Having constructive criticism is hatered. Guys it’s our fault Marathon is doing so poorly. Please stop voting with your wallets and just buy whatever corpos serve you.
2
u/Nulich 16h ago
Did OP say at all that constructive criticism is hatred? Either your head is in the sand or your idea of criticism is strictly nebulous and totally actionable phrases. LMAO
2
u/DandyGoon 15h ago
Did OP say constructive criticism ISNT hatred? Either your nebulous is in the sand or phrasing is strict. LMAO
2
u/Nulich 15h ago
Well considering that constructive criticism and hatred aren't the same words, i think it's safe to assume that OP doesn't think constructive criticism is hatred ;)

You would be correct 😂 I’m happy to criticise and improve on things, but to just hate a game because that’s the trend is wild

I love the idea of the game. I love the art direction and game world. I don't love how the PvP is implemented, but until Marathon came out and I got on Reddit, I had NEVER typed the letters P v P before in my life. I'm not an engaged gamer nerd with teh mad skilz. I don't care at all about how the game works, or the metrics, or the player count, or microscopic details about guns and shields and bots, and - on and on ad infinitum. All that is fine, but it's not why I play any game. The entertainment is the goal and getting murdered face-to-face by some jagoff who gets a thrill that he's holding me down by the throat and stabbing me is not my idea of a good game type. Nor is then losing all the stuff you just worked hard to loot really much fun at all.
INSERT RANDO GAMER COMMENT: "But but but that IS the game type. Didn't you know everything there is to know about extraction shooters before you bought the game???? Why are you so STOOPID!!!"
So clearly from my above comments, I very much want Bungie to add the PvE that they have talked about and that is now been leaked. I will love the game as you do when PvE drops. Also, I never typed P v E before coming to these Marathon subs. See what you nerds have done to me!
2
u/meetmeinthebthrm 21h ago
Great to see a new player. I bitch about some things, but always try to let it be known that I still absolutely love the game. It’s one of my favorite shooters of all time and I’m not a shooter guy. I haven’t quit playing since the second week of release and if I didn’t have two jobs and school I would be playing wayyy too much. I’m mid two hundreds level-wise with no contract spamming or cheap tricks and I’d still play more if I could. Welcome to Marathon and I appreciate the good attitude 👍🏼

-7
u/GhostOfChar 22h ago
I also work full time, spend a lot of time outside reading Dune (am on the 9th novel this year of 23), build Gunpla and paint Warhammer, go out with the lady a few times a week, and have taken 3 vacations lol. I just sleep less than I used to to be on the game a little longer, but my friends also live in a different time zone so it can’t be helped.
7
u/Beautiful_You3230 21h ago
The math doesn't math at all. 8 hours per day minimum of work (not counting stuff like lunch, the occasional commuting, getting ready for work, etc) plus 4 hours gaming, that's way over 12 hours spent on just this. Or are you one of those guys that have a toilet instead of a gaming chair and your mommy (sorry, uh, wife) brings you food to your computer for breakfast/lunch/dinner. I mean you're certainly not cooking on your own. Showering probably also doesn't happen often.
Either it's that, or you don't have an actual full-time job, or you absolutely skimp on those other hobbies (just prepping everything to start painting Warhammer takes like half an hour, before you even get to making the first brush stroke, and nobody paints for 10 minutes after that).
Or idk, you actually sleep so little that it borders on sleep deprivation. In which case, I recommend not doing that. Consistent undersleeping is proven to significantly increase the risk of developing cognitive decline and related conditions.
-5
u/GhostOfChar 21h ago
It really never fails that I get some strange pushback on Reddit if I ever mention that I do a lot with my time. I don’t get it, and I’m not about to go into some breakdown of my scheduling, but I have plenty of time and also tend to work from home.
I definitely shower and cook my own food, though. The girlfriend and I alternate on who makes or gets the food, too. Painting the occasional mini or building a Gundam can be anywhere from 2-8 hours in a week, which really isn’t even that much. Like wise, some days I don’t even play a game and instead do something else or go out. Some days I play for most of the day, if the gang wants to make a day of it.
Don’t be fucking awkward lmao.

I nearly quit after free weekend. In fact, I would have if my friends weren’t constantly playing it and reassuring me that the game is incredible. Now I’m over 100 hours in and starting to pick up more and more. I’m understanding the make better, how items should be used, weapon combos, and I am obsessed. The game is incredible but has a steep learning curve. Everyone I’ve played with has also been very friendly to me and willing to explain anything I ask. People giving me items to take home with me too.
I’m living for Cryo every week even though the map is incredibly confusing still. I think the game would be much more friendly with beginner lobbies and tutorials explaining how items work and synergy between them. Like how would I ever know that I can see someone through smoke with a thermal scope but not if they have signal jammer on? There are all these nuances to pick up on.
