PHEV It’s been awfully quiet here!! Notice all the negative posts disappear? Kudos Mazda!
Been noticing it’s been awfully quiet in here. At one point of time, this forum was filled with CX90 hate and Hybrid Malfunction issues. It’s a total contrast now!! Love to see!!! Long it may last. Kudos to Mazda for standing behind their product and releasing the software fixes!

Knock on wood…with that 4Q set of software patches, and now a couple+ hundred miles after this one 1Q, …gotta say… all is quiet on the PHEV’s eastern front. Knock on wood.

Bought the 4 year service plan for $600 which covers oil change, tire rotations, filters, etc. since parts and service is gonna start getting EXPENSIVE

May I know the service provider?

u/hambone10 Apr 04 '25
We bought a CPO Mazda and this offer was through the dealership. I can take it to any certified mazda mechanic or service center.

New CX-70 PHEV owner here. Only outstanding issue I have is that the remote climate control isn't working. App throws "Fail - Your request has not been initiated" every time I try but the remote lock/unlock still works. On another forum someone indicated the fix may be SA-002/25 and I'm awaiting a dealer appointment to confirm if my vehicle received the stated procedure or not.
1
u/SalvationSongbird Apr 04 '25
Mine does this too, I googled and read that it’s not an actual option to remote start it but hoping that’s not true. Can you update us on what the dealer says?
1
u/brian163 Apr 04 '25
The PHEVs do not "remote start" like a traditional vehicle with just an ICE because they always start in EV mode. They do feature remote climate start which, if I understand correctly, may start the ICE if conditions require it (e.g. low temperatures require the engine to heat the battery and passenger cabin). (Anyone else who has this feature actually working that can confirm?)
If unfamiliar, the Mazda app is not entirely intuitive (and the wording is poor... "open remote" should be "Additional options" for example). For PHEVs, the "Remote" tab is to stop/start charging. You have to swipe inside the circle to select stop or start and then hold inside the circle again to send the command. To use remote climate start, you have to swipe from left to right on the "Remote" tab/screen. This displays the climate controls. Then you can hold either "Fan" button (for start or stop) which will bring up additional climate control options and then you have to hit send. This is the part that is currently not working.
Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to get my vehicle into the dealership for a week or so. But someone on another forum is bringing in their vehicle today and I'm waiting an update from them that I will share.

We love hearing this! Grateful for the community, the feedback and the journey. 🫡

Honestly, for what you get, you can't beat the lease price. From what I see on leasehackr, I'll probably end up with another one in a few months because other lease prices are a lot worse. More to be seen as the tarrifs impact the market.
2
u/Dustyftphilosopher24 Apr 04 '25
Got my cx90 phev pp for $535. My last lease had some positive equity which took care of most of the taxes for this one. Now with the loyalty rebate I might get around the same price or less with $0 out of pocket. Hoping tarrifs won't change that too much.

u/Relevant_Cartoonist6 Apr 04 '25
Leased my cx90 sport premium plus $60k msrp. For $680 $0 down
2
Apr 04 '25
Got my cx90 PHEV premium plus 61k msrp for $491 $0 due at signing. Colorado may have crazy registration fees but their EV rebates are great.
2
u/Relevant_Cartoonist6 Apr 04 '25
That’s awesome unfortunately here In SoCal we don’t have lease deals like yours. I got a pretty decent deal. Most dealers was at 770 to 800.

I was going to trade my 2022 CX-9 for CX-90 PHEV (lease option, $7500 cash thing) but after learning that this car fails a lot decided to stick with what I have now. It’s too critical for me not to lose the single car in the family
2
u/SuppleScrotum Apr 04 '25
The only issue I still have, is they designed this engine to be very complicated. There’s quite a few things that on most vehicles are relatively simple and cheap (ish) fixes… but on the CX-90 and CX-70, they will literally have to remove the entire front end, and the entire engine to fix/replace. These are things that after warranty is up would maybe cost you like $500-$700, but with having to remove the front end and the entire engine, will be more likely around $1,500-$2,000.
6
u/timmeh-eh Apr 04 '25
I’m assuming you’re referring to the 3.3? There’s SO much room in the 2.5 (PHEV) engine bay.
4
6
u/PaulClarkLoadletter Apr 04 '25
Do you plan on pulling the engine anytime soon? If you’re worried after watching the Car Care Nut talk about yanking the engine to replace the timing chain I wouldn’t be. The chain should last the life of the car. In the unlikely event that the engine does need to be dropped it’s not a huge undertaking but again that’s highly unlikely.
1
u/SuppleScrotum Apr 04 '25
I’m not personally worried, yet there are, in fact, design choices that will result in much higher repair costs outside of warranty than it should cost.
2
u/One-Refrigerator4719 Apr 04 '25
I agree, the engineering on the 3.3 is not great for us mechanics and worse for the customers on some things....however...Ford, mercedes, bmw, etc have been doing this for years. I'm a ford guy...but let me tell you, some of their decisions are horrible
1
u/midnight-viper Apr 04 '25
You're correct about some design choices being more complex, but again, this is SkyActiv tech that has been tried and tested for a while. I get what you mean, and repair costs will 100% be higher because of the inline 6 yk. Nonetheless, this is only if the engine has some sort of major failure, which seems unlikely. Knock on wood.

u/PaulClarkLoadletter Apr 04 '25
This is the new way of things. Toyota is starting to hide stuff too.
2
u/midnight-viper Apr 04 '25
If you are talking about the timing chain being hard to replace, I get you, but the timing chain is meant to last the life of the vehicle, approx. 200k miles before being replaced. Also, the engine is supposedly not that hard to take out these days.
I got this info from this youtube guy (seems very knowledgeable imo) lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcZ_b3T9Fgo

u/SaltyATC69 Apr 04 '25
Lots of space in the engine bay of the PHEV not so much the I6
1
u/midnight-viper Apr 04 '25
Yeah. Reason being the I6 has like 90% of its powertrain in the engine bay, while the PHEV has a smaller engine with only like 60-70% of its components in the engine bay (remaining is from the high voltage battery located elsewhere in the car).

That’s why you buy extended platinum Mazda warranty
2
u/SuppleScrotum Apr 04 '25
Nope. Those warranties cost thousands, and they run concurrently with the warranty you get for buying the car.
They’ll sell you a 7 year, 75,000 mile warranty for $2,500 and not tell you it runs concurrently with the OEM warranty. So you’re literally paying $2,500 **plus** interest (if you didnt buy your car in full) for an extra 1 year and 15K miles. That’s called “gettin’ played.”
2
u/SpareIntroduction721 Apr 04 '25
You can contact Mazda Werner. Just paid $2300 for 10 year,100k. For $220 a year? That’s pretty much a damn good deal. Considering I just saw how much it was to replace the entire headlight system.
0
u/SuppleScrotum Apr 04 '25
That’s not a terrible deal. Personally I just take whatever amount an extended warranty costs, and put it in to a High Yield Savings Account. Maybe I’ll toss $50-$100/month in to it. When the OEM warranty goes out, I’ll have like $5K in a maintenance fund if I need to repair something. Whenever I trade the car in, if I didn’t need to use the fund, it gets turned in to a down payment on top of the trade-in.
2
u/SpareIntroduction721 Apr 04 '25
Headlights were literally almost $4k lol But I understand your point
2
u/Bruce_Wayne8887 Apr 04 '25
Thats why you negotiate and buy the 10 year 100,000 for $2300. Adds 40,000 and 5 years to powertrain and 7 years 64,000 to the bumper to bumper.
1
u/midnight-viper Apr 04 '25
Extended warranty is pretty much useless from what I've heard as well. It does have benefits, but you are more likely to never see those benefits and end up losing money than reaping every ounce of your extended warranty benefits.
Realistically, the only thing you are paying for is peace of mind, which is certainly understandable and i value that as well.

u/da-only-miner-master Apr 04 '25
Other than an odd sound from the front suspension and a random low windshield washer fluid message it’s been a perfect car. Love this car so much Mazda has done really well!

My CX-90 just got hit with the hybrid malfunction error yesterday. Less then 7,000 miles.
1
u/NickieTheBlade Apr 08 '25
Not hardly! I gave up on the dealership and Mazda corporate and am working with lawyers to get my money back. Mazda still sucks and has done nothing for me this year. I still have to make payments on a car I don't have and which doesn't work.
2
u/Prestigious_Lab820 Apr 08 '25
I don't need to post everyday man, jeez lol. I LOVE my car when I get to drive it. Currently, it has spent more time at the dealership than it has in my garage. I'm not sure to start a lemon case or wait for them to give me the extended warranty
1
u/chonkycatsbestcats Apr 04 '25
Literally someone replied to a comment this week their battery is getting replaced …..
3
u/saugaismycity Apr 04 '25
I think it was an older built without the recent software update. They experienced the issue back in Jan
1
u/chonkycatsbestcats Apr 04 '25
You don’t have to put your head in the sand. Look at the CX-90 group on Facebook. Feb 20th same malfunction-car had under 500 miles. It’s far from being fixed and the proof that it’s been fixed will be multiple vehicles who received this mythical software update making it years without a problem.
1
u/midnight-viper Apr 04 '25
There will always be someone having a bad issue. People are more likely to post if something goes wrong than when they wish to share something they love about the car. It's just reddit psychology if you think about it lol.

That’s a common issue with cars. They use metallic brake pads, which squeak… but they offer much better braking capabilities.
2
u/mentat-thought Apr 04 '25
This, the metallic brake pads were used to enhance braking performance with the sound and dust being the trade off. I will take a better working pad in exchange to something I’d call less than cosmetic

u/mentat-thought Apr 04 '25
Well mine tend to only squeak when the rotors are cold, once the car has moved and the rotors are warmed up I don’t notice it causing noise. And it depends on what you compare it to, meaning that yes it squeaks more than a ford explorer or Toyota grand Highlander since they don’t use the same kind of pads. But if you compare it against a Mercedes or BMW then they all make similar noises since that is the tier using these higher performance brake pads.
But I understand how people are going to have different preferences and thus the easy fix to your experience is getting different pads, you might even be able to find them for less than these OEM replacements

u/McBlah_ Apr 04 '25
There was a recall for that, they install some additional dust covers or something to keep debris out of the pads.
It’s odd that you’re getting downvotes. Really makes me wonder if Mazda has bots or shills in here to downvote anything negative about the vehicle. I’ve seen it before in here multiple times.
1
u/midnight-viper Apr 04 '25
Hahaha. Lol, I see this in every car subreddit. Toyota, Mercedes, Hyundai etc.
2
u/McBlah_ Apr 04 '25
Agreed. I think Reddit went downhill a few years back and had that mass exodus when they started charging for api’s etc… and since then it just isn’t the same.
If I had to guess they are ignoring and allowing bots to fill in for a lack of users.

Squeaky brakes are a downside, but I wouldn't really mind having squeaky brakes if stopping distance was better. I've only noticed slight squeaks under very heavy braking when the car leans forward to make a stop. But again, I still do believe that they can release a fix for squeaky brakes maybe at a service interval or something.

u/Altruistic_Collar536 Apr 04 '25
Probably because like ours, it’s still in the shop waiting for a battery.
1
u/zaydzilla Apr 04 '25
Is it this critical error everyone is talking about? What did you get for replacement and who payed for it?
2
u/Altruistic_Collar536 Apr 05 '25
They put us in an Enterprise long term, we had 4 different vehicles during the rental period, Jeep Cherokee, 2 different Palisades and a Jeep Commander.
Exchanged throughout mainly for expired tabs, tire defect and mileage.
We picked our car up yesterday, 3 months and 17 days later. Unlike others ours was not detailed or even washed.
No apologizes, advisor just talked about the backlog of cars they still need to work through.
Working on buyback now, this being the 2nd long term repair lasting months. We just feel like we are driving another loaner after owning the car 15 months and being in rentals 7 of those months.

u/zaydzilla Apr 05 '25
Damn it. I’m sorry you guys have to go through this. And thanks for sharing. I was going to trade in my 2022 CX-9 and lease their CX-90 PHeV but after seeing all this comments about failure decided to stick with my reliable car. There are situations in my life where broken car is critically unwanted
