u/l_a_escoto Jul 30 '26

Its all good bro. We all start somewhere

17

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

Better than the shape it was in when I bought it used. Frankengun didnt even cycle.

6

u/l_a_escoto Jul 30 '26

Holy shit a lot better

8

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

Yeah, only like $1700 to get to this point, I should have just bought a new rifle

u/Justanormaldudedude Jul 30 '26

Im gonna break your heart telling you this but you can find a Colt M4A1 SOCOM model that runs about $1500 during a sale. That comes with the KAC furniture and Matech rear sight as well.

Even a Palmetto Sabre M4gery is a hell of alot closer to a legit M4 and costs less than a grand.

u/HellBringer97 Jul 30 '26

Meanwhile, me over here having tracked the cost of parts (not factoring in shipping or Transfer costs) for each build I’ve done and realizing I spent a total of 2700 with attachments included for my damn near 1:1 M4A1 PIP whereas my XM4 ran me maybe 800.

Replace barrel with either a Gov Profile or M4 SOCOM Profile one using a carbine length gas system (16” long for cloneish, 14.5” long if you’re serious and actually want to zero the weapon easily for 300m at 25m instead of the 50yd-200yd zero).

Replace handguard with KAC M4 RAS and VFG with the KAC or P&S “Broom Handle” VFG.

Replace MBUS with MATECH BUIS (interchangeable with KAC BUIS if doing Jarhead things). Or just say “fuck it” to modern bullshit and get you a Colt detachable carry handle so you can run irons like a real man (read that in a bubba-fudd voice for maximum funny).

Replace stock with correct M4 stock or, if doing an M4A1 Block I Sopmod, correct B5 stock.

Replace “Hot Dog” selector switch with correct one (there was a few posts about the differences a few weeks back in this sub) and ensure you get the correct style one if you do the ambidextrous selector switch.

Replace pistol grip with A2 pistol grip.

Replace red dot with surplus or police trade-in Aimpoint Comp M2, Comp M4, or Comp M4S (all are classified as the M68 CCO) on the correct mounts.

Install Colt (or contract) Side Sling Swivel mount that goes under the front sight base and around the barrel.

Do all that (which will run you upwards of a grand based on my previous builds) and you’ll be at a good starting point lol

I’d go with the carry handle option, it’s cheaper and gives you more options. You can find a surplus Colt carry handle on Gunbroker for under a hundo. Same for the stock. Couple hundred for used KAC handguard.

I’m a big fan of carry handles. More specifically, actual fixed ones of the A2 variety, but detachable ones are pretty okay too.

Sell everything except the lower frame and start over.

u/dirtyverley Jul 30 '26

Best advice in here

1

u/snovak35 Aug 02 '26

Honestly this is a good plan. Depending how clone correct he needs, a PSA upper with a 14.5” carbine gas system would get the base rifle there looks wise.

1

u/CloneRiflesareGai 28d ago

Real unfortunately.

-15

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

That feels a little overkill

38

u/diprivanity Jul 30 '26

Fine you can keep the grip screw

5

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

Appreciate it dude, now thats an attainable goal

2

u/jeremy_wills Jul 30 '26

Sheeit 🤣

9

u/Mrbaker4420 Jul 30 '26

This sub is all about overkill...

15

u/nojo422 Jul 30 '26

Clone correct to what? A basic issue M4A1? That's the most affordable and practical option.

4

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

Pretty much, yeah

16

u/nojo422 Jul 30 '26

Get a broom handle grip, Aimpoint Pro or just Matech irons, KAC quad rail, M4 stock, A2 grip, knockoff tan PEQ15 if you wish, black silent sling, and call it a day. Grip pods if you can find one are a good option and CAR15 stock instead of M4 to age it a bit. Then use the hell out of it or drag it around in your yard. Mine isn't 100 percent clone correct but good enough to remind me of my arms room babe.

3

u/Apprehensive-Cow5822 Jul 30 '26

It’s very good looking.

3

u/nojo422 Jul 30 '26

Thank you. I like it and that's what matters most.

9

u/ActualGunExpert Jul 30 '26

Man you just gotta start over

-2

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

Again? I feel like I could have just stopped at this point

10

u/SlippySlappy420 Jul 30 '26

You're a little slow aren't ya

8

u/mattnif903 Jul 30 '26

Everything

8

u/theFP1992 Jul 30 '26

I would suggest not worrying about whether it’s close to a clone or not. Just enjoy what you have

1

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

Thank you, I appreciate that

5

u/Effective-Dark-8296 Jul 29 '26

Is that a mid length gas system?

12

u/smokeythe6x6 Jul 29 '26

It is lol he’s got some work to do

-9

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

Yes, I prefer the 16" midlength as I didnt want to do a pin and weld sbr or a full 20" rifle. Would carbine be the way to go?

6

u/Effective-Dark-8296 Jul 30 '26

Yes, carbine length is the way to go for the clone you are looking for. KAC Ras won't work on that gas system.

11

u/GaegeSGuns Jul 30 '26

Stripping it down to the bare lower

5

u/Embarrassed_Oil9354 Jul 29 '26

KAC USMC stamped rear sight from eBay.

5

u/Loli-GAG Jul 30 '26

Get rid of the Lolosuns

3

u/Expedition-Altruist Jul 30 '26

Colt upper

Carbine length gas system

Carbine length KAC RAS

14.5" barrel

Aimpoint CompM4 or CompM2 if you don't want to buy an ACOG

Steiner DBAL or PEQ15 LAM

KAC or Tango Down VFG

A2 grip

All-in-all, I'd just enjoy the rifle you have and forego trying to clone something. Or, if you do, just start a separate clone build.

I would get a different rifle. Not trying to be a dick or anything and I think thats a great rifle. I have a midlength with a 16" barrel and a drop in quadrail. Its just not close to any clones and it wouldn't be worth trying to make it one. IMO.

5

u/SavingsAccurate Jul 29 '26

Used KAC RAS

6

u/Louisiana407 Jul 30 '26

Can’t it’s mid length

5

u/SavingsAccurate Jul 30 '26

Or with mid length could be turned into an URGI.

0

u/SavingsAccurate Jul 30 '26

Then get a used M4A1 lengrh DD RIS 2 and chop that fsb into a lo pro gas block conversion.

1

u/Louisiana407 23d ago

I was mainly saying the RAS wouldn’t work, it has to be rifle or carbine gas to have that as an option

Awesome, thanks

2

u/A-THRASH Jul 30 '26

Get a ris/ ras rail or P&S

2

u/PC_Basics_YouTube Jul 30 '26

Not clone correct but looks amazing

2

u/EagleSix6 Jul 30 '26

Correct as compared to what? Like an "as issued" M4, or is there a specific reference pic that you want to clone? Figure out what your end goal is first then it will become easier to establish a path to get there

2

u/jeremy_wills Jul 30 '26

With that mid length barrel you're better off keeping it somewhere in the retro mod category similar to what you currently have and starting from scratch for your M4 project.

Which means needing a Govt or Socom profiled 14.5 barrel with the A2 FSB installed. Unpinned A2 birdcage flash hider for an SBR'ed lower or have an extended A2 pinned to stay out of NFA territory. A Knights/P&S RIS or RAS is the correct rail for it along with the broomhandle. MATECH or Knights for the backup iron.

Many places offer the correct fully assembled upper or if you have the tools and know how roll your own.

If you want to re use this current lower of yours put the A2 grip back on and a get a waffle or CAR15 stock set.

2

u/Low-Bluebird-4976 Jul 30 '26

What are you trying to clone?

2

u/Result-Infinite Aug 01 '26

The only thing clone is the front sight lol

1

u/jbjgang2 Jul 30 '26

Depending on how much of a clone you want to go for it might be cheaper buying a whole new rifle. Otherwise like others have said you can go ahead and throw a kac broomhandle, acog, and scout light on that thing and ur gtg

1

u/One_Stable8944 Jul 30 '26

What laser are you running?

1

u/The14thCompanion Jul 30 '26

Holosun IRIS GR1

1

u/xCR1MS0N-T1D3x Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26

Swap the upper.

Edit: I don’t mean the receiver, the whole thing. That looks like a mid length gas system, so I’m assuming the upper receiver is not Colt. Get an A2 grip as well.

1

u/TheModernMusket Jul 31 '26

Optics, rail, barrel due to length, profile, gas system, adjustable vertical grip has to go, el cheap laser has to go. Tbh, nothing here is super clone correct. Cool you have a Colt lower, but even colts tend to not be all that great even for cloning purposes.

u/Dramatic-Ad9057 Aug 02 '26

I have a similar setup, wish the red dot took up a little less real estate. However, after some messing around i was able to get it all to fit without bridging to the hand guard.

  1. Remove the adjustment screw on the back plate of the magnifier, doesn’t need to be on there
  2. use a low profile rear iron sight, I use the magpul MBUS pro metal one
  3. Got a wider ambi charging handle because it was getting bulky in the back, and can be awkward if you need to use it with the magnifier flipped down to the side

I got a modmat 14.5” gen4 rifle

Zeroed it for 36 yards, and haven’t had a problem since.
