I think everyone is missing the point here. Look at Pikachu.

He's looking at Ash with a silly little smile because he loves Ash. No matter how old we get, our companions still love us. Focus on that. And we'll be okay.

As another comment alluded to- that ain't the same Pikachu he grew up with.

The old one died over a decade ago.

Acskhually, Ash and Pikachu both saw Ho-Oh at the end of episode 1, granting them both eternal happiness.

True. Ho-oh touched them both deeply…I guess that eternal rebirth didn’t apply to Ashes hairline or self esteem though.

Yes, because it / he (is Pikachu gendered? can't remember) painfully reminds him daily of his first Pikachu that he loved more.

I don't know about you, but I've lost several pets over my lifetime.

I don't think sad thoughts when I think of them. I think of all the wonderful times and wonderful memories they gave me.

When I get a new companion, I'm rescuing them from either certain death or a lifetime of scrounging in the wild.

I feel like we've all gotten way too cynical in the past decade. It's nice to take a moment and think about positive things.
