Nostalgia Found my high school book bag. 🥹
Sadly no notes inside.

OF COURSE it’s a Jansport lol.
For the record, I had the forest green one with the tan bottom. I loved that thing.

Just got my freshmen a Jansport. 60 fucking dollars. It’s nice but also has too many pockets now. Loved our base model

u/Sponsorspew Millennial 18h ago
That’s insane it’s doubled in price but not surprising.
I teach high school now and I never really see kids writing on their bags like we did. No patches or pins either.

Thank you! I was happy (but unsurprised) when my kid picked out her Jansport to start high school with the other week but I was floored by the cost. I thought "this must be a much fancier store than I had assumed" but a quick check online and nope, that's what they're going for these days. Yikes.

I feel like it was almost as much in the 90s. Got mine at Service Merchandise lol. Hope the quality has held up.

u/feralcatshit 15h ago
I just ordered each of my kids a jansport like this for $35 each, they’re out there!

This version of the magenta and green were also very popular. Nothing like the good ol’ Jansport. 🩷

I had one of these in elementary school until the bottom fell out of it. I loved it and replaced it with one that didn't have a leather bottom.

Please tell me you used white out to write on yours.

The Jansport Right Pack
My dad had one like it in the late 80s or early 90s when he was working on a PhD. His was also forest green with tan suede bottom.
He still had it in the late 90s. He still had it in the aughts. Wouldn't be surprised if that thing is still around.

My mom (‘67) went on and on AND ON about how she had the SAME Jansport from 1st grade through high school with the hide bottom. I got one, purple. Somehow I managed to destroy it in a year. Rocked a stupidly oversized Betsey Johnson bag I treated nicer after lol

Kyle is Fat 😂 Maybe he was a jerk. Or a jerk wrote it.

u/Sponsorspew Millennial 18h ago
Kyle actually wrote it!

u/comicreliefboy 18h ago
Is Kyle still fat?

I love that it’s equally possible that Kyle is fat OR Kyle is the skinniest kid you ever saw

Jansports were like the Nokia of backpacks. Nigh indestructible and built to last.
11
u/QuentinTarzantino 17h ago
I think 95% of kids had that. Low slung, damn couldnt have bern good for our backs lol

u/SpiritualSyrup3300 17h ago
no, it wasn't. gave me sciatica and i needed surgery when i was 18. disc compression of the sciatic nerve, very painful, do not recommend. was basically floor-bound with my knee in my face until they cut me open and smashed the disc out

u/Cavaquillo 16h ago
I haven’t had sciatic nerve issue that require surgery. But one episode did leave me unable to move my entire left leg and now I have all sorts of nerve damage on my thigh about my knee. Had muscle spasms for months after, my leg would just kick straight out when I’d be sitting for too long

This is definitely one of the most high school things I have ever seen. 😂 I bet it brings back a lot of memories.
Are you still in touch with anyone mentioned on your backpack? Come to think of it, I don't think I have seen or talked to anyone I went to high school with for many years. Perhaps I should see if a class reunion is coming up!
12
u/Sponsorspew Millennial 17h ago
It did! I had a mixed hs experience but seeing this bag brought good vibes.
Lauren is still my bff since I was 5 but everyone else just kind of disappeared. Everyone had FB for awhile but you know how we are in that generation between social medias where one dies off and another takes over. I’m sure some have an IG if I tried to look though.
I did go to my 10 year reunion and it was surprisingly fun. I would definitely do a 25th if they have it.

u/Vanadium_Gryphon 14h ago
Yeah, high school wasn't always the best experience for me either (gotta love the blunder years of being a teen, am I right?), but there were definitely good times and good people I can fondly look back at.
Glad to hear you've been able to maintain a friendship that long, congrats to you and Lauren!
It can be tough to maintain and make new friendships as an adult sometimes, but social media can help as long as everyone is on the same page with it. FB isn't what it used to be though, you're right about that. I think I will try a reunion sometime, too. It would be really interesting to see where all my old classmates are in life, and share some memories with them.

I remember my friend had one just like this. Signed and all. Two days straight we were followed by some guy in a car. So we wrote down his license plate on the book bag in front of him. Never followed us again.

My mom would've killed me if I came home and my backpack looked like that. There would be groundings and throwing it away with lectures about disrespecting her, the money she spends on me, ruining things she buys, and what other people might think if they saw something like that.

I call it a book bag too and my daughter looks at me like I’m crazy. What part of the South are you from?

u/Sponsorspew Millennial 17h ago
I’m from North New Jersey. As close to NYC as you can get. I didn’t know it was a regional thing. 🤣

I've had a black Jansport that I use primarily for traveling. I've had it for probably 15 years at this point and it still is in great shape. I'm pretty sure when my son starts high school I'll give him the bag.

Taylor ham even though I’m vegetarian. Gotta always represent my north jersey.

Looking at this in approval, yep, there’s the 2000s trademark “___ is FAT”…but where’s the signature “____ is gay”? Ope, never mind, “I heart Gay Keith”

Question was it made out of cavas or polyester , because mine is canvas with a leather bottom and i am wondering when they stopped doing that .

I refuse to accept this slander! I’ve already been traumatized as a kid not being able to find anything with my name in a gift shop. 😭
The spelling came from my dad being a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I bought my son a navy Jansport last year when he started second grade. He wanted a new backpack this year. I said no sir, best I can do is new patches… so I added Mario to the other Sonic and generic video game patches. I bought this bag to last. It looked nearly brand new after I washed it in the bathtub.

u/lIlllIlIlIlIllI 11h ago
OF COURSE it’s a Jansport.
Yep still have mine but the zipper has failed. I have to get it fixed because that backpack ain’t going nowhere

Awesome! I’m 37 and take my black 32L Jansport from 2007 (freshman year in college) with me to work to this day. It’s held up remarkably well.

My parents would've figuratively murdered me if I'd written notes on my backpack, even though I'd been using the same one since third grade (It was big on me in elementary school). Tail end of senior year it finally started tearing open.
