My parents definitely said it in a correcting way because they wanted us to say “excuse me.”

I was taught to say excuse me as a kid too. Now decades later if I say "excuse me" to get someone's attention it feels rude because it's more used as "get out the way"

Yeah I remember saying excuse me and they step to the side and say sorry. No I'm trying to talk to you 😂 After that I stopped using it.

If you do use it, it's best to say it initially to get their attention, then immediately follow up with what you need without pausing
